Many of us think of meditation as something done in a seated position on the floor or in a chair. However, meditation is not limited only to that. Walking meditation is designed to bring our body and mind together as we walk through our daily life. In this video, Mingyur Rinpoche discusses why walking meditation is beneficial but also why it can be challenging.

I have found that meditation and mindfulness don't help with my bipolar condition. I stay mindful during waking hours but when I feel that my depression is going to return it is usually too late. The depression cycle is unstoppable. I am able to better manage my highs since mindfulness stops me from acting too quickly. Before mindfulness I would become rash in my spending habits and sexual conquests.

I often find walking meditation easier than sitting meditation. The rhythmic, repetitive action of walking provides the mind with something to rest on (much like the usual breath), there is a natural experience of stillness in motion, of flow, and of connectedness with the environment through tactile sensations. I also find it easier to attain a sense of stability and balance in walking than in sitting with an imperfect posture. It just works for me.

Not to sound weird but when you are feeling like it is not working, that is a deeper part of yourself, your subconscious, being stimulated to release deep pain and anxiety that you may not even be aware of. When that happens, "it is not working" just think that all it takes is time just wait patiently and see what happens.
@patchi657
@patchi657 2 жыл бұрын
Another point to note that may help is when you think "it's not working", realize that it is a very common experience and that it is ok. Do not beat yourself up, do not push yourself too hard, meditation is just like everyday life there is both good and bad days. Accepting that it's not working is also in essence, meditation, so you should view it as a good thing. May you be happy and continue this path to be free from suffering :)

When meditation doesn't go as well, the intention to meditate is still there. I think that's very important. Sometimes I have the same experience, like my meditation didn't go as well as before. Sometimes I'm more easily distracted. But we're students and every time is a learning experience. Learning about our minds and how they work. Success is often preceded by many failures. Wishing you success and a good meditation experience :)

everyone with their theories. It not working, is also it working. In fact, it is working even better when it doesn't work. When it does work, that is lovely and nice, when it doesn't work, you are actually doing much more with the meditation. This is mingyur rinpoche's teaching. You cannot 'do awareness' wrong, merely being aware of whatever it is you're aware of on purpose, that is meditation even when you can't do it.

Wonderful! I also find this very helpful: Meditator becomes aware of a number of stages in the process. 1. Lift 2. Bend 3. send 4. drop 5. put 6. press Then add,Intending to lift - lifting Intending to bend - bending This training will synthesize into awareness of what mind is attending to.

I can only speak for myself here, but sitting meditation helped me to get in touch with myself. For many years I thought that a part of me had died, but it was ever present and tended to manifest itself in negative ways. Talk about the chaos of everyday life. What it really wanted was attention, and I describe it as a wounded part of myself. Now, when I engage with others there's a part that shows, but I can notice the same thing I noticed within me. A person I meet might not notice this, but it's almost as if I recognize that part of their-self that they don't. In doing so, it is as though I bring that part into a positive light, so they don't have to. At least, for me, this is now an intuitive way to connect with other people.

Thank you 🙏 I'm a meditation teacher & have taught the walking meditation as one technique. I suggest going somewhere in nature where there's no noisy traffic nor lots of people, if possible of course. Also whenever possible to walk on natural surfaces with barefeet (which is also "earthing"). As we walk, breathe deep but not forced breaths into the abdomen & to walk with purpose, ie to set the intention of what we're doing & focus on putting one foot in front of the other. Then as we walk, feel the sensation of the air/wind on the body, to feel cool air enter the nostrils as we inhale & warmer air on the exhalation. Also when we walk with barefeet, have awareness of the sensations between the soles of our feet & whatever surface we're walking on. I suggest to do it alone but it's ok to do with a friend as long as we don't talk & don't be too close to each other's energetic field 👣🙌

@@ayeaye1363 thank you! I always try to meditate just sitting listening to my breathing, but my mind really switches off and focuses on one thing, when I do move. @@Tora_74 It is still much better than not practsing at all. How about any other position e.g. lying down, standing up position etc. Awareness comes and goes but we must keep practising. If I do meditate lying I tent to fall asleep. But standing works somethimes while I do the cooking or dishwashing. Funny as it is, when I use my hands or I move, it is easyer for me to switch my mind of. I agree that meditating is important both for our body and mind.

What a freeing invitation to walk naturally! I used to have a misconception that to meditate or contemplate while walking means I have to intentionally walk slowly. What this did to me was that I became more preoccupied with policing my pace rather than flowing with what was happening in and around me. I guess this applies to breathing as well? Breathe naturally instead of modifying one's breathing?

I would love to hear a talk on changing wrong beliefs. I have recently been finally facing painful things I have carried, and I've discovered that the pain in them is held in beliefs that I adopted before I was old enough to choose what I believed. As I practice, it gets a little easier every day to overcome and experience life without them, but sometimes they come back as if they are an old habit that I forget I no longer do. I've discovered a lot about my mind is habitual, almost random, and that is ok. but I would like to bring about a true change in belief, to a correct one, one I know to be better for me and everyone around me. Achieving right belief.

Ultimately one should be in meditation all the time, no matter what activity is being performed - it actually shouldn't even matter. Start by watching your body if it becomes easy, start watching the mind. If you master those things, liberation is not far away - more or less, those are Osho's words.

I have been learning Buddhist Meditation for 8 years. I learned Taoist techniques from books a long time ago. The teachings of The Buddha have aided me immensely. I lived in the forest for a year and fasted 45 days before I had studied meditation. I can't walk much I will focus when I walk!

Also moving meditation! All the forms... (I used to call it self-named free Qigong) one of meditations(another one half-prostration meditation(self-called) it has benefits like all body is relaxed and minimum energy consumption and just mind because meditation normally is so hard for me unless serious order of a teacher or situation) I'm developing.. Love and compassion, I understand why is needed to mention both, they are of same quality area and related closely, compassion maybe is the most important part of love, maybe.

Oh my goodness if you do walking meditation correctly is my understanding being mindful from the standing position then say starting with your left foot mindful of your inhale and as your left foot comes down you are exhaling. This is actually a very slow process at first until you get the hang of training your yourself to be mindful of all that is going on. I’m only at ten paces 😅 or I will hyperventilate 🙈❤️💫🙏🏽

I have severe sciatica, I need to walk to maintain weight etc. I have shooting pain, I basically, leave my body in auto-pilot and place myself somewhere without pain.

Meditate in everything you do. In other words, just pay attention to your actions.
