I'm 16 and I've been drawing for years and I only recently started using guidelines and my work has come out a lot better. I just discovered your youtube channel and I gotta say: WOW. You're really good at this. :P I hope to be as good as you one day, m8.

I know this is an old video, but I'm a 70 year old girl learning how to draw females. I've drawn cartoons growing up, but I love the way you teach. I like the stick figure type of drawing. I used to oil paint years ago, but never really knew how to draw, so I'm going back in time. Thanks Mark, I'm watching every video of yours. I just made my first manga female

I've never really cared for stick figure guide lines. They tend to distract me, personally. But after watching you use them I'm motivated to give it another shot. It is a great tool to use if you want your final product to be a little more "exact". Thanks again, Mark. Like I always say, when my graphic novels begin hitting shelves, you will receive credit from me for your guidance.

Still I use guidelines they help so much when drawing the hard parts like hands. And thanks to you I've started ysing a lot of your examples haha thank you so much

I think you should always use the guidelines in a sketch, with a basic framework of the background in simple lines. The framework helps you get the pose down correctly and the use of outer lines obscures the exact pose. Later one can use curved contour lines to depict the gesture. Its like story boarding your idea meticulously beforehand and then fleshing out the idea in the proper drawing.

Dude, I think that guidelines are extremely helpful, whether your a beginner or not. It just helps sketch out what exactly you want to draw, rather that just going straight into the drawing and getting it all wrong...I have done that plenty of times in my drawings so this video really helped. Thx!!

I'm an aspiring graphic novelist myself with no work to show for it whatsoever because I don't feel comfortable enough to present my artwork. However, with Marks videos, I feel I'll be a much greater artist in no time. He really is a great help, with a cooky sense of humor. :P Thanks again Mark. Actually, a good idea for a video would be drawing kids, I have a few characters that are kids ranging from 4 to 12 years in age. I have difficulty finding anything for a reference to little ones and was wondering if you would be able to do a video on how draw them, from hands to body structure seeing as they don't have the curves or broadness of adolescents.

I used to start out using mark crilley's methods in the past, but it didn't work out. After a while a found a book that taught this method of drawing characters. I started out drawing the stickfigure, and then later on I started using geometry and shapes and perspectives to form my characters. That's how I learned how to draw character, but still mark crilley is my idol, I used some of his drawing as reference. Thank you Mark Crilley, you've inspired me, I am now like an intermediate artist right now.

I've been a fan of your videos for quite some time now Mark, think I've seen pretty much every one you've uploaded and not a single one has gone to waste - I'm always able to take some pointers and tips away and just generally leave the video a little better than I was before (Nothing great, but I'm working on it!) I'd just like to say a big thanks for all of your effort, time and genuineness in caring about your fanbase, I don't think I've ever come across another KZbinr, let alone tutorialist who actually genuinely takes interest in their fans and goes out of their own way to assure they are actually teaching things, not just uploading "new" videos every week. I personally would like to see more tutorials on guidelines and creating characters from absolutely nothing as you did here, they're the most educational videos I think you do, giving good general tips as well as practice for those who follow along. I have to say though, I'm not so much of a fan of your latest videos, drawing specific characters from certain shows, etc. Sure, they're amazing and for people who would like to draw THAT specific character, they're great - but I personally don't feel they offer as much insight and general knowledge that can be applied to other areas of drawing (which is exactly what this video DID do, and you need to do far more of these in the future). Thank again Mark, stay awesome and I look forward to seeing more uploads from you.

Hey Mark, one way to resolve the "liking/disliking" of guidelines is to consider doing a strictly beginner HTD series where guidelines are used more to help pure beginners to draw. Not just manga, but anything. Personaly, I like to call guidelines "framing". Just like you build a house on a frame. Thanks for the vids man! They're awesome.

I started out with realism and using multiple photo references. I failed to see the point in guidelines for the longest time. You have warmed me up to the idea of using them along with incremental details which has been so much more helpful when working from my head.

I really like that you showed us how to draw poses that start out as stick figures it helps. Drawing the figure can be rather difficult without guidelines.

More like this ! This is very very helpful for people like me who don't know the first thing about drawing ! This helps me a lot and boost my confidence in my drawing when i can copy what you do and understand why I'm doing it to go on and create other drawings !

Loved seeing the use of guidelines for pose construction! Now on to your hands videos... Since you asked -- Suggest you point out the thin/thick sides of the lines regarding flesh placement (shin/calf, etc) and that the spine line is at the back of the torso. Likewise, one needs to consider the proportions of the stick lines: Upper/lower arm equal (before perspective), spine/upper/lower legs equal, etc. Also, I hated erasing, too, but now understand the eraser is my friend. It's no sin to redraw/adjust/modify as needed and erase. Thank you and well done!

I think I am the kind of artist who sees things in shapes - outlines and occasionally shadows. I have a hard time drawing things using geometrical ideas, so although guidelines annoy me sometimes, they can be really useful! This video was so helpful. Sometimes you just need to see someone else use a technique before you can use it yourself.

I thought that the stick figure beginner technique was really useful. I'm trying to start a manga of my own called Lady Love, and I've been watching your videos to help me figure out manga down to every detail. Your videos are really helpful and I thank you for your videos. By the way I think what you say is really funny.

when i first drew bodies,i ignored the guide lines and shapes and just straight out drew the body.and improved my drawings over time, but the hands, feet, legs and arms i had trouble with.then i looked back at my drawings i made and realized im not good at drawing the human body with out making it look a little deformed.and then i look on how to draw the human body and didn't like any of there methods, then i came across your video and saw this was a great method to start with!i even bought one of your drawing books with me to school so i can draw at school too!thxs for the great video!!!
