When artists draw trees or groups of trees they connect them to the earth somehow. When you do buildings you connect them to the grid. Love it, love, love it!

Really just so stunning!! That sky... The perspective .. The feeling of the place just captures and draws one in... At first, and from the romantic side of my brain I thought... "I would really love to LIVE there!" .. then the practical side had to ruin it... "Just look at those stairs!" Possibly a vacation... or and Artists retreat... yes... that would be the perfect place for that!! Thank you again... So thoroughly enjoyable to watch you create!! cheers :) !!

Your work always looks so light and luminous and effortless. I watch and follow along (on good paper with good paints) and my effort at the same scene invariably looks heavy, overworked, dense somehow. Any advice? Hi Peter, I am just getting into watercolours and I wanted to ask if you stretch your paper before hand. I can see that you tape it down but not to sure if your stretch it to stop buckling if you ever get that. I also wanted to know whether you think I should stretch my paper which is canson XL (I know it's not the best). I am going to be doing small sketches like you.
@patnapolio7 жыл бұрын
Peter will reply to you but I'll still add my two cents. Peter doesn't stretch his paper. He says if there is a slight buckle he just lives with it. Kinda makes it real. Every since I read that, I learned to love the organic look of watercolor in my sketch books and paintings. I'm talking about just a slight unevenness to the paper not severe buckling.
@PeterSheelerart7 жыл бұрын
Hi Rhianna. As Patrick said, I never stretch my paper. I use 140lb paper so it's fairly thick. I used to sell limited edition prints and the only noticeable difference in the two was the buckled paper of the original. I just consider wrinkles part of watercolor art.

The exclamation Yikes! is terribly underutilized. Here it invoked just the correct amount of panic into an otherwise peaceful situation. My wife, the Midwesterner, in the midst of a similar catastrophe, would have shouted, "Save the pieces!" I'm glad you didn't try to lift the window pigment out, but instead drew our attention away with those crimson touches. We wouldn't have even noticed. Bravo!

Was is taught to you?(your style) What advice would you give me? Besides Practice,practice,practice.......lol Which I always do! IF ANYBODY ELSE HAS ADVICE FOR ME,,,, PLEASE DONT BE SHY! I want advice... HELP!
@Donna_G7 жыл бұрын
Hi Kat, I have been drawing and painting since I was in elementary school. There is a quote which has been attributed to Pablo Picasso: Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist when he grows up. When it comes to drawing and painting, children are fearless. When they become adults, some of these same children will say things like "I can't do it." Often they say this because some where along the way they have had adults that tell them they can't do it. Children will put pencil lines on a paper and call it a house, a tree, mommy or daddy, a dog, or what ever is in their imagination. You can practice drawing by scribbling: straight lines, circular lines, angles, curlicues, and so on. Your lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. Years ago, I drew a simple seen of a river, rocks, and trees using just scribbles. I did not use any straight lines at all. When you draw, don't think of it as drawing, think of it as scribbling. Find your inner child and let her come out, she will help you.

Alfonso Dunn on youtube is very good for learning pen and ink. Teoh Chie is helpful if you like Urban style sketching. Peter is of course the best of both worlds. Make sure to click above where it says "show more" and read the materials list. I was just like you until I became determined to learn. I still practice everyday and I still think what I do is terrible. Someone told me that "Your work is never as bad as you think it is and it's never as good as you think it is" The good thing is that drawing CAN be learned. Just like a musical instrument it takes some people longer that others but it can be done. Taking a screen shot of Peters drawing and tracing it is fine if you want to get on with just the watercolor part. I have done both mainly because after I spent the time to draw it I would ruin it when applying the watercolor (Lol) so I would make a copy trace it and then paint it. All that said, you still need to practice . Look at Peters tutorial from 9 months ago. He has one of three birch trees. I love this one because trees are all different so when you draw them they don't have to be exactly like Peters. They will still look like trees and when you paint them they will be beautiful. Good luck. Oh, Did I mention that I'm colorblind? Yes I am and I still do watercolors, because Peter names the colors as he is using them. I can follow along and paint. People cannot believe I painted and drew the pictures . Good luck

DEAREST DONNA G. & PATRICK NAP, I want to say a big thank you to you both for your advice & kind words. I appreciate it greatly and I will follow your advice. It makes alot of sense what you both are saying... Maybe I am putting too much pressure on myself...... I have a tendency to do that alot. If I dont succeed on the first try I tend to be very hard on myself and get discouraged easily.. I guess Im like that in every section of my life. I need to STOP doing that! I was wondering if either of you have some of your work online? Id love to check it out :o) It would be a pleasure for me to take a look at what you do.... Do you have other art passions that you love or practice besides Drawing & Watercolor? If you would like to keep in touch, please let me know thanks again. Peace & Love
@PeterSheelerart7 жыл бұрын
Hi Kat. Great advice from Donna and Patrick. Learning to draw is about learning to see and observe. I find most people draw what they think they see. Patrick mentions my birch video. This is a perfect example. I find people will draw a tree with the branches all coming out from the sides. Not so in real life. They also come from the front and back and crisscross etc. And yes, Practice.
