You have no idea how long ive searched for a anthro head tutorial that actually helps, and knowing this one’s from you already makes me believe this’ll help out a lot-If i remember ill be back and edit this comment with my thoughts! Thanks for the tutorial sensei! Edit: I haven’t even finished the whole video and holy crap my understanding and process of drawing anthros skyrocketed! Its explained in such depth, along with visuals to show exactly what should be done and how to interpret and change it to fit oneself. Id recommend to anyone watching to put everything down and have focus on the video while drawing along; Pause if needed, but i personally found myself doing his first example than using the other however many as a way to apply to an angle he hadn’t drawn (or if he had then without looking) I still have ab 15 min left, and can’t wait to finish the video tomorrow (its late, gotta sleep) I might edit again when finished, idk ありがとうございますリヌスせぬせい!!

Angles, yesss I'm a furry artist, and the face/muzzle angles kill me because I can't find tutorials/references that make sense to me; thank you! Although the fact you've studied for a few weeks and are this good, while I've been doing it since 2009 hurts me a little, lol. I know they're super important, but basic shapes/forms for the pre sketch have always been something I struggled with... Been trying to do them more, since watching your and a few other artists' work; though it's difficult because I've essentially been freehanding for over a decade. have to unlearn that a little. Anyway, thanks for the video!

Thanks for the excellent video! Someone I know online recommended it over on a Discord Server I'm part of, so it was quite a surprise! Given what else I've seen of your portfolio, that level of skill is *not* a surprise. I'm glad you made this anyway because I'm sure gonna try putting this into practice!

Simple tip for making fur: One thing I noticed in canine species at least, is that as the fur gets closer to extremities (like closer to the top of the ears or the muzzle) it gets shorter and less apparent. Get some references and try to observe this yourself!

I can't describe how grateful I am for this tutorial. Drawing such characters was the reason I started learning to draw from the beginning. I've already tested your technique and I still have a problem with the forehead, but the muzzle is much better. If the second part also includes an explanation of drawing legs in the digitigrade style, it will really be a dream come true after several years of torture. Thank you. ;')

Oh, this is very interesting. I tend to do a lot of the construction instinctively, so all the explainations why you do the things you do help me understand my own process better. It might seem like a tiny thing, but I especially appreciate the ears on the angry face. A lot of people draw them flattened, not pointing up. And you did handle drawing furries really well, forsooth. There is a bit more to it than slapping animal heads on human bodies, the character needs to be a well rounded whole, which you seem to have understood right away. I shall share this with a few fellow furry artists.

Very very good! I'm surprised your furries look this clean if you've only been studying for a few weeks. Are you a professional animator or illustrator by chance? I really like what you've shown! I do have some input to give, as I'm a 3D sculptor and kind of 'specialize' in furries - cough - and there are some interesting differences I've discovered between human anatomy and the varieties of furry anatomy. Here are some of my general understandings: 1) The corners of the lips as well as the nearby lip tissue tends to be very elastic - to the point you could still see a muzzle almost make a contracted "ou" sound with their lips. Kind of like whistling, but not quite. This does depend on how long the muzzle is, of course. Little Miss "Do I do it for you~" won't be tweeting any ditties anytime soon. 2) The area connecting the base of the tail to the tailbone would feature a flush or fan of light musculature branching to either side of the spine, which is visible as it raises the fat and skin up and creates a small obtuse crease line underneath the tail. 3) Furry digitigrade feet are usually preferred with four toes, while the hand has five digits. That means there's a vestigial dewclaw on the inner side of the foot between the heel and first toe. It may be visible on the outside or appear as a small bump or slightly raised area. For furry designs with four digits on their hands, completely ignore the dewclaw. 4) Digitigrade legs (non-avian or insectile) have a slightly degrading 1/3 ratio, where either the thigh is longest, the calf is slightly shorter, and the foot slightly shorter than that. Or, the inverse. Likewise, the size of the muscles and how 'bunched up' they are on one end of the bone depends on the resting angle of the joint. 5) If a furry has plantigrade legs or pseudo digitigrade legs where they're just on their tippy toes, they're going to need heel pads too. 6) The sharper the resting angle of the digitigrade legs, the more the pelvis slightly rotates with that angle. This ends up exaggerating the lower part of the spine's S curve. 7) Generally speaking, digitigrade legs are just longer than their comparable plantigrade legs. Otherwise, the resting position of the knees when sitting down are much shorter, and things like sitting cross legged become impossible. 8) There's a specific style of three bulbed bean (the soft pink part of a palm or foot) that's widely popularized because it's cute and somewhat resembles the central bean on pets' paws. The shape of that central bean is shaped that way because of the digits around it and how it needs to flex. It does not work on a bipedal furry, and especially does not work on a hand like palm. The grooves in a human's fingers are there to assist in wet/dry grip. So consider how a furry's palm would work in order to facilitate a similar level of wet/dry grip while also satisfying the fandom's desire for a bean pattern. There are numerous ways to do this.

This is a great intro. I highly recommend focusing on reference collection to get started with a species. For the Andean mountain cat I worked on today I made a whole page combining both the specifics of that cat - facial structure, tail, patterns - and general cat info(skeleton, musclature, paws, ears). Then I started a character sheet from that, just arranging the things I noticed into the simplest side/front poses, and flipping between the cat reference and generic human figure reference. When all the reference is in one place, you can just eyeball it, and when you use the simple pose you can focus on the overall design instead of problems with getting the forms in perspective. After the design is done I can reference a human pose, loosely sketch that, and then modify it to fit the proportions of the character. I'm not as great a technical draftsman as Lines and I'd still make major errors when constructing from scratch, but I can use this process to work out the biggest problems in small steps and build up to the illustration.

Hey LinesSensei. Thank you, as always, for your great tutorials. I have to ask, if it's possible, if you'd be interested in doing some tutorials on realism. I feel like something many beginners fail to address and it ends up biting them much later down the road is that they never practice being technically rigorous. I know we all want to draw our OCs really well but increasing our skill by making something realistic allows us to better understand how and when to break the rules. I've been drawing for 4 years now and only recently started doing my own characters, I have a lot of anatomical knowledge and practice but I never managed to make the jump into realism, and with that I notice that I don't really know in what direction to grow now.
@LinesSensei2 күн бұрын
So that's a really great question, and I really agree that realism is an important part of the fundamentals that can aid you in taking a drawing further. It's also the place from which I draw a lot of my fundamental skills that enable me to do the anime girls that I do. The reason I haven't prioritised them as the first couple of videos or even mentioned it yet, is that for a lot of people it can be a bit off putting because it isn't really very.. fun. And silly as it sounds one of the key things I want to work on with getting beginners into drawing is ensuring that their experience early in the piece is enjoyable , because if you aren't having fun you won't continue. so my decision has been that our prioritize making things enjoyable and accessible even though some more dry fundamentals would be potentially more helpful long term. So it is absolutely something I do plan to cover but I'm trying to find a way to make it fit with more enjoyable more cartoony kind of experience.
@ayuvir2 күн бұрын
@@LinesSensei Yeah I fully agree. Chief reason why I'm unable to start drawing realistic is that the moment I start it, and the mistakes start piling, I lose interest. I'm glad you plan to eventually cover them, looking forward to it.

I'm not really sure where you got the info that kemono is an in-between stage between Kemonomimi and Furry. The only real difference between Kemono and Furry is the artstyles you'll typically see. That kemo style you showed with the more human looking faces is just one of the styles more popular with the anime/moe crowds over in the east, but if you compare that to the styles of Kemono artists like Null-Ghost, Xigma, or Gamma and you'll see a world of difference, but it's all still kemono.
