- I loved the pillow cases, the design looked like stars in a stormy sky, I was surprised at how vivid the dyes on the dress were. Thanks for sharing this.

I watched this video and have a few comments - at the end two of the girls complained that they were a bit disappointed that the colors were muted. During the video they tell what kinds of dyes they used. Ritz and Dylon. I would suggest that traditional tie dye basics would probably apply to this type of dying process as well. Start by washing the fabric in specialized detergent for removing oils and sizing from the fabric (Synthrapol is the one I use both before the dying and during the final wash and rinse of the dyed fabric) Next soak the pre-washed items in soda ash for fifteen - twenty minutes then wring them out and while they're still wet tie or scrunch the fabric in whatever fashion you've decided you want to try. I saw some ice tie dye that the fabric had been twisted and tied just like for a spiral design in regular tie dye and it looked amazing. I learned years ago that quality dyes make for quality tie dying results. I use fiber reactive dye from Dharma Trading. The cost of the dye is very reasonable and the dyes are the very best I've used over years of tie dying. OH lastly - if you pre-wash the fabric and then pre soak it in soda ash you don't need to use a fixative at the end of the dying process. The only other advice I will add is that the traditional time for letting dyed items "sit" is at least 8 - 10 hours - I usually consider a full 24 hours of wait time after dying and before starting the rinse cycle to be the best. Thanks for the video ladies it's a great introduction to ice dying fabric.

I came here because a friend who is a master at making clothing made some ice died T-shirts. I had to find out what that was having never heard of it before. Really good informative video. I liked all of the results. Thanks.

I love all of these. The colors on the dress are my favorite. That top with a cute pair of white pants will look fabulous and the pillow cases have a unique galaxy effect that I really like. Thanks for this ladies.

I absolutely loved this demo, Thank you. One question, the lady with the dress, her dress was origionally orange, How did she get the dye out and for it to be white?
@onlinefabricstore5 жыл бұрын
Hi Julie, we used Rit Color Remover to get the orange out: www.onlinefabricstore.net/rit-color-remover-powder-.htm

Great experiment! Interesting how the jumper dress came out so much more saturated.
@onlinefabricstore3 жыл бұрын
Right?! Jen had used color remover on the dress before, so that could have been part of it. She also only used the two colors, and really saturated each side, so both of those things together probably played a part in that. It could also just be the makeup of the dress. I like to look at dying as an experiment, so you never really know what is going to happen!

I love this way of dye-ing! I did a few scraps with very old dye from my mom, came out great! Will have to buy dye now, we have Dylon here in The Netherlands. Do you know if I can also use the Dylon dye in the pods (for machinewash)? Thanks for this tutorial!

They're muted because you used crappy dye! And RIT is 100% useless. Leave it to us professionals. :)
@onlinefabricstore5 жыл бұрын
Sure, Rit fades over time and requires heat to really set well, which is kinda hard with ice dyeing...but it would be no fun if everyone just left it to the professionals! The best part is the experience and knowing you've created it yourself. We used Dylon too. I have two ice dyed shirts made with Dylon and wash them regularly. They've held up well over several years.

@@onlinefabricstore It was a great experiment to show the different brands of dyes and how they worked. Now people know. Perhaps someone doesn't want super saturated then they can use the cheaper RIT dye.
