There is an offroad technique where you use your foot to quickly and briefly stomp to kick the bike back up. The trick is to do a stomp and retract as quickly back to the peg, put your foot out ahead, stomp and pull it back up before it goes behind. It can definitely sometimes save you, but you must not leave the foot down for more than a split second.

I lost my 750 cornering on black ice, very quick! I still had the handlebars so lay on the side listening to the plastics disintegrating. Important bit - I kept my feet up, knees bent, because the engine was still driving the rear wheel, not many boots would survive that. Damage, bike £1000, me zero.

So funny story, coming to the hospital today my bike just slid from under me when entering the parking space for bikes and motorcycles, as I was giving a wide berth for a cyclist. The floor transitions from asphalt to concrete (smooth finish), that by itself or coupled with rain isn't a big problem, but I guess adding bird droppings (of the swallow variety, damn you V tailed beasts) did prove a challenge. Wearing gear does make a lot o difference, padding and knee protection did its job 👍 So I could just get up, not hurt, assess the situation and move on. The bike is fine, it was such a slow speed incident, I was more worried they woul charge me for the scar left on the floor😅

Falling has always been a fear of mine regardless of bicycle or motorcycle. I've been wanting to practice cornering and balance with my ebike so I have skills that I can adapt (rather than completely learning from scratch) once I move onto motorcycle courses so knowing how to handle things when they tumble is wise. 😅

After you get some speed don't do any abrupt movements, especially when leaning, and go slow enough to anticipate road conditions in an unfamiliar place and you'll be fine.

Another thing that helps is psychical conditioning. It takes some time, but for most people even two or three months of stretching yoga or muscle build up can make a difference. For me yoga classes have paid themselves in recovery time after some falls on which i though i was gonna break something. Also you can start whit some less fall prone exercises so you are nice and warned up when you start to really mess around

That's indeed great advice! You can learn also from other sports, like football, rugby, combat, how to fall in a "controlled" way. The technique is basically to divert straight impact energy into motion energy, by rolling round the length axis of your body or in a salto movement. Being fit and flexible and having a good awareness and control of your posture certainly helps.

The first thing I learned how to do in Korean Martial Arts class was fall down. You start out on nice soft mats, but the same techniques work on concrete. Pressure = Force/Area. You lower the pressure by increase the area of contact. You slap the ground with your forearm, from elbow to hand, rather than sticking out your hand when falling. Same with other parts of the body. Maybe we could get Michelle Yeoh to throw you around for a while to demonstrate.

My question regarding drop from low speed or even in absence of speeed is even if we overcame the instinct to use the feet and we remain over the moto, once the moto go down, don't we risk to have the foot and even the leg under it? Or maybe given the position of the foot over the rear break or the gear shift the tip or the side of the foot could scratch the hard surface and so later move.

As an expert on crashing bikes I just want to add that crash/engine bars protect your engine not the rider in fact the Hurt report found crash bars cause and inordinately high amount of serious leg injuries and also caused crashes in high lean angles from hitting the road and either picking the front wheel off the ground ot hitting a crack in the pavement. Worry about your legs not not you engine.Conversely sliders protect both your legs and the bike in a slide. I had 10" sliders CNC ed and they have saved both my legs and my fairings many times.

what to do when front wheel slips??? I have recently started trail and off road biking, I have found out that it highly depends on 1. wetness of the road 2. front wheel braking 3. degree of which you turn the bike, all 3 at the same time will def cause slipping, how to land when this happens? does using a higher quality tire help prevent this?

Want to be safe on a motorbike? Don't ride. I rode many miles over 40 plus years, and had my fair share of close calls. In at least half of those cases it was good luck, not my riding skills, that prevented serious injury. Unless you are willing to wear ALL the safety gear ALL the time, constantly practice and improve your riding skills, stay within posted speed limits, and NEVER ride drunk or stoned, you are at very high risk of injury or death on a motorbike . . . and even then the statistics are not in your favor. So don't let anyone fool you. Motorbikes are, and always will be, very dangerous, even if you follow this advice to the letter. Good luck!
