Here in my old Arlington tx house my living room was like that. I hated it. You’d have to cross it to go anywhere in that house as it was the central room. So you’d have to take a step down and then back up. No fun at night. Only reason I never filled it was the back door was on that level and to raise that door meant breaking brick outside and yeah not worth it for me at that point.

I think you're not too worried about the slab moving up and down. It's not structural, and even if it did become structural later, It's a 6in slab of reinforced concrete, and would be fine.

Homeowner dodged a bullet at the fireplace for coming up 6 inches, looks like it was on the high side at front, to clear without coming to high.
@OdellCompleteConcreteАй бұрын
That’s true. I’ve done one before where the fire pit was too low so I simply installed a 2x4 and poured up to it, essentially it lowered the fire pit and the opening was 3.5” shorter.

I poured a lot of “sunken living rooms” in Florida back in the 80s. The tile under it won’t be an issue. 6 inches of concrete ain’t going nowhere. Probably should have cut the drywall off.
@OdellCompleteConcreteАй бұрын
I hear that
@roberthickenbottom4719Ай бұрын
I'm sure the concrete will be fine on the floor but why would you pour up against drywall how you going to take care of that if it gets flooded and it's going to stay wet for a long time causing mold on the drywall immediately it would be almost an impossibility to remediate that now
@OdellCompleteConcreteАй бұрын
Done them this way a bunch of times never had a complaint or call back
@SamsonsConcrete-r4zАй бұрын
@OdellCompleteConcrete Concrete poured up to drywall or drywall sitting on top of concrete slab. If that room floods, drywall is wet either way. This method is fine. 👍🏼

I imagine the leaving the tile is fine but I would have doweled in some vertical rebar to tie the concrete firmly to the existing floor, to eliminate any shifting.
@OdellCompleteConcreteАй бұрын
Glue , vertical dowels and bound in should do it
@SloverOfTeuthАй бұрын
I've used a concrete epoxy and masonry nails successfully. Maybe you'd have to drill pilot holes through the tiles, which is OK if they aren't granite.
@Paul_n_TexasАй бұрын
@@OdellCompleteConcrete I don't disagree at all with your work done here, but we have to remember there is only one great contractor in California or possibly the universe and he would say you were wrong with the plastic because you don't know how to run a pump and the dowels were wrong because the floor isn't going to move. I won't mention his name but those who know, know. :) As far as pouring over the tile it's pretty much irrelevant. Concrete is poured over limestone, gravel, black top, metal etc and as long as the base is stable it's fine.
