- Being "popular" in school in America can sometimes have a bad connotation... like in the movie Mean Girls. But in Japan it is much different.

It might be because he's from countryside? Just a guess. Usually those who live in poverty or more country side areas in Asia 'tend' to either have darker skin and/or higher skin complexion, while those with fair/pale skin have more baby faces, though this could just purely be genetic......baby face seems to be strong in my family in the south china area. Also from my experience usually ABC's tend to look younger compared to those who are actually from mainland china, or those who spend majority of their life in the US. It could be diet , maybe the air or lack of air pollution.

I've never been able to find any studies that would prove it, but in my experience it's just a lot more difficult for Japanese men to gain physical bulk. For example, Jun and I work out together and my arms will pretty much blow up like balloons while his barely change at all, but he still improves his strength much more than I do. He's said before he feels like they get denser rather than larger. I've only ever seen one Japanese guy who was buff, and yeah he stood out in kind of a strange way.

I think that's true for Asian people in general; (I'm Taiwanese and) I used to lift a lot, but I looked like a stick the entire time. I actually made money because someone bet I couldn't lift a certain amount of weight looooooool
@masahikokumashiro6778

this is 4 yrs late but direct work like gymnastics holds build the mind muscle connection because it forces a certain muscle group to work. personally i didnt have my muscles grow that much through my 10 ish years of martial arts, they got tighter and look nice but they didnt grow too much. when i started doing gymnastics work like holding my body up using my arms and got better at it, my arms and back (back is used in everything basically), it started to grow. I think Asians just have to work a lot harder and force the muscle to be under tension for a longer time then other races do. Im also a haifu (half Caucasian/Japanese) , but it has also shown in all gymnasts in general. I think the Asian body prefers adaptation to environment more so then lifting weight for a short period of time then chilling out like other ethnic groups can do and grow. It may have to do with swordsmanship and other things we did, environment to hunt we needed speed and agility, etc.

In America no one seems to care if you're smart, it's like the opposite, Smart people are looked at as unpopular... That's one reason I'd like Japan. Not that I'm smart or anything... :p

PrototypeQZ In the US, I was smart in high school and everyone likes smart people like me because I don't really brag about it. One way is to help my classmates when they don't get it. I guess it's just the type of high school you go to.
@Chatoyancify
@Chatoyancify 8 жыл бұрын
+reyanime Definitely depends on the school and town. From elementary and through high school, being smart was highly valued (New York City). Competition wasn't exactly overt, but it was clear because we quietly asked each other what we got on tests. The most popular students were the ones who studied the most and were outgoing.

In my experience a lot of girls don't take you serious if you're not, for lack of a better phrase (or cause its the best phrase xD) "all up in their grill". And acting like a jackass amuses a lot of guys so you also get that social support in a delicate situation.

My classmates usually excludes me, saying things like, "You're too nice, and smart. Why are you so smart?". Yet when you're rude to someone or act bitchy.. They like it for some odd reason. I hate how in MOST schools in America, popularity = attractiveness, a personality that somewhat includes swearing and the few stereotypes. I find it difficult to get good grades because whenever the teacher praises me from time to time, I get these looks like I'm a weirdo. To be honest, I actually don't mind being a "weirdo" or a "nerd", that's because I Would rather be successful than be sucked up into the world of popularity and worry too much about something's that's not even that important Just had to share this somewhere... Sorry

in america, If you are mean, pretty, wear things like leggings and wear tons of makeup you are considered cool and popular. the otaku girls at my school have AMAZING fashion sense (like awesome), kind, accept your sense of humor, and somehow get called nerds. literally one of the popular girls heard me and my friend make a joke and she is like " umm, I don't know if that was supposed to be funny or not cuz it wasn't". and totally ruined our buzz. Don't let some high school trolling trash heaps ruin your life and school experience. The whole world has people like that. Someone in the opposite hemisphere is dealing with exactly what you are. Be confident in yourself and your abilities; I dealt with the same people people at the black schools I went to, I'm african american, and let me tell you: THOSE GIRLS HATED ME. They hated my long hair, my talents, my personality, my grades, my everything! But here I am, in college learning to be an animator, and my life has never been so focused and at ease. High School just kind of sucks in general, so there's really no way around that. Besides, if it makes you feel any better, some of these same trolls I knew are single, broke, ugly and some even with 2 children; expect the same thing with the trolls at your school. People who are like that are usually popular because they're at their peak, which sucks because they're only in high school. Not to say you should take joy in others misfortune. Like they say: What goes around comes around.

Girls which behaves like that are often regarded as easy lay and cheap. We tend to assume that they know if they know what fish to fish for they would know what bait to use. And the criteria you just listed; it pretty much fit in our idea of a raging hormone girl which fits the bill of a raging hormone boy.

Um, one question. I am very, let's say, passionate and outgoing. If I feel strongly about something or feel that something is wrong, I will voice my opinion and voice it loud. Example: *friend is calling one of our teachers a bitch* Me: Weeeell, I wouldn't be too sure about that. She teaches well and just because she is strict and doesn't treat you like a baby, you call her a bitch? Have you ever taught a bunch of hormonal and rebellious moody teens? No? Then don't be so quick to make opinions on people. Is that like bad to say in Japan or is it okay and normal??

May Athena Well, in a different video, Rachel has made a video about what not to do in Japan. So far (from what I've seen), expressing your feelings in Japan isn't necessarily "accepted". Just keep to yourself. Unless you're a foreigner to Japan, they'll most likely understand. You can always look up videos about what not to do in Japan.

I'm currently going to an American public school and american movies like Mean Girls give people a false scene of high school here. 1.A real American high school is to big for everyone to notice that one person or a specif group. 2. I find that in American public high school since its so big you have a "social network". Its made up of kids who run in the same circle of people but aren't necessarily all friends even though they know each other. An example would be those group of kids who are into rap/hip hop culture form a "social network" and have popular kids in there but those group of kids who are lets say into anime,manga, video games, and such wouldn't really know those popular kids. 3.There is no way anyone could run a school like in mean girls and not get their butts whooped! No one would stand for that. 4.People really only care or notice whats happening in their friends and social network and not much else. 5. Maybe this could happen in a public school that's in a small town or a private school but in most schools its just way to big for 4 girls to run the school.

Agreed. In my school, we had popular mean pretty girls but only the people in their social group cared for them. Whereas there was a hierarchy of popular dancer girls and boys. The same goes for band, sports and even geeks. I was in the geek group so the most popular were usually the girls and guys who got high grades. Coincidentally a lot of the girls who were smart were also really pretty too lol. But they were more nice compared to the mean popular girls.

Then I might fit in well in Japan, because I believe I am smart (in school my grades are average though), I am polite and respect everyone around me, but unfortunately I'm not good at sports. This is why I like Japanese culture over Western culture because in the US, people only choose crass, rude, and attractive people as popular. You need to be smart and polite in my opinion to be popular!

excuses like this are from weak people , there are many things that can make u popular by stating only smart and polite people should be shows u are insecure about ur look thats why u dont like good looking people . about rude etc i agree its not attractive but thats how society is at ur place and belive me in europe too at least while u are younger . one more thing what he said about asians is well WRONG being educated and studying 10 hours a day to know everything from the book and getting good grades doesnt make u smart being smart is smt else its either ua re or u are not and from what i have seen aisans are pretty much sheeps that do whatever they are told and dont use their head much which in my opinion makes them hardworking not smart there are again many ways of being smart now depening in what category u go under u can be or might not but belive me studying to get good grades without questioning anything and just following the rules like i said is characteristic of a sheep and is far away from being smart . so when somone says asians are well known for being smart etc its misused concept of using the word smart proper one should be hardworking My writing sucks i know so dont bother trying to be internet jack with saying oh mr hot guy learn how to write since that wasnt the point of my post .......

I never lived in America, but in France, when I was in highschool I was bullied by a group of girls who acted like in the movie you're talking about. They were almost consider as leaders for other people in my class. So they start to bullied me too because they don't wanted to be reject by the leaders anf be bullied too. That's the way french people think.. I guess it's the same for american people. That's sad, because if other people didn't accept that like japanese students do, life would be peaceful xD ... I think it's because in France, to be a respectful person, you have to be strong, and being nice is consider to be weak.

That's really interesting, smart, kind, athletic... in my school, it's what made you unique so it could be anything really. From the overly involved NHS and CSF president (me) to the theatre crew, it really varies. I met people who were inspiring actors in school plays, photographers, politics debators, contemparary media editors, choir people (that was me), people who were involved in community service clubs like Key Club, people who even founded their own clubs (me), creative writers who participated in the school's literary magazine every year (that was me too) AP students or advanced placement students (me too) etc. In America, I think you can be a lot of things and if your confident enough doing them, people will admire you for that. Of course, there were some kids who didn't care about school and were never involved, but they had there own unique qualities too. This one guy wanted to be a tattoo artist and would always be drawing, another girl was a major tumblr fashion person. I like how Japanese schools focus on kindness and being humble. That's nice.

Where I live (in California), smart people are teased and looked down upon from elementary school through high school. The popular people are the ones who "live in the moment" and do lots of daring things, even if that means being a complete jerk. This changes in college. Depending on the college, you'll be popular for either being smart and kind or for drinking a lot and being hot

It's very true. However, in my school, people who are considered the "popular" kids are actually very polite and friendly. They get along with everyone and laugh with everyone, not at anyone. Apparently what I've heard, they're called "The Swaggits".. That's only for my grade level. The one above us are worse. The popular people in the higher grade level are the people who are in relationships already and they make out in the hallways. It's not really a nice thing to see, unless you like to see two people eating each others face off.

in my school in germany looks seems to be quite important especially the breasts of a girl but also her face. Even though most of the guys say they dislike mean girls it happens quite often that they still hang around them alot because of their looks. But in my year we never really faced bitches (or at least they weren't that much of a problem) But what is more worse is that you need to be really strong when your looks are below average or are "unnormal". Girls with a flat chest encounter quite some difficulties (I got to experience that myself when I was 13) and if others consider you ugly you won't find many male friends probably not even one. Smart people are respected but not really popular. If you study alot people will call you a nerd (Streber) and you're not cool at all. Because many people think studying is uncool. (Don't misunderstand, I hate studying but I think it is a good thing if you are determined and work hard for good grades or something like that) I really admire Japanese because they look at the personality and I like that it is so important to be nice and polite. But I guess I would be too cheeky to be liked xD

For some strange reason, my head was locked to these kinds of values as kiddo, I thought that if i'm nice to everyone no one has no reason to be mean to me, but it wasn't true and that shoved me down into the pits of shyness. ughh... What most of people suggested for me is that I would punch everyone who'd piss me off, but I didn't really believe in that. >.> Oh well, I guess kids are kids... Not sure, if life in Japan would have been easier, but at least it sounds so much nicer than what is here. I guess you could throw here the phrase:"Grass is always greener on the other side". And once I found greener grass from the other side, by moving to new town and school. xd Next I have to plan out what i'm gonna do, but the general goal is to get to work with games and stuff.

It depends on the school. In middle school, I was bullied for being a nerd and a Christian (and I was bullied by two teachers for having asthma). In my first year of high school, I found out I was well liked (which was very shocking to me) by students in my classes but not by the rich and popular kids or my cross country team (again, asthma). I was liked by all but one teacher, my photojournalism teacher didn't like me because I was poor and a nerd, so I transferred out of that class. THEN, I transferred to an alternative school and I was actually popular, because of the reasons Jun mentioned! Then I went to college and I didn't make friends in class but I made a lot of friends through clubs.

I wonder if the diff between America and Japan when it comes to this is Japanese are thinking of the end game? Obviously someone who's intelligent and kind will be more beneficial for society and the school than someone who's just good looking and rude. Looks don't last forever, but brains last much longer. It's good to know that bitchy girls becoming popular is not the norm everywhere.

At my school (I'm American), there wasn't an issue of getting made fun of for being smart, but it was how you acted that mattered. If you were egotistical about it, you would get knocked down. But just getting good grades or being knowledgeable wouldn't make you a target. IF a group decided to target you for whatever reason (in my case, they were mad because two of them wanted to date my then-boyfriend/now-husband, and one had already been turned down), it doesn't matter what you look like, how you dress, how you act, they will "make fun of you" for anything, or just call you names when they can't think of anything to make fun of. But the "Mean Girls" thing... not so much.

Oh man, that makes me really enjoy my high school experience. It was fun that not only did everyone know everyone but all the separate cliques still bonded. The popular kids even hung out with everyone and it made it feel as the popular kids were not even popular. The asians (myself),geeks, nerds, jocks, everyone hung out with everyone. I felt that because our class was small had a major factor in this in addition to being not one of those major schools within the district.
