I am Japanese and I attended university in the States. Let us see how she does. Habit 1, Very true. smile covered. (Being too forward.) Never show face of high born, True. I am a high born but I prefer not live that lifestyle. Habit 2. True, although I have never understood this (high tone) and my parents allowed me to speak normally. I wish to see more of her, she sounds like a wonderful person to speak with. Rachel & Jun Thank you for posting this. I majored in language arts, foreign languages.

When I was in Japan, I noticed that all my girlfriends and their mothers were doing that, and since it seemed natural to them and that environment, I picked it up and subconsciously made it a habit. Here in Norway some people ask me why I cover my mouth when I laugh, but it's become a habit and I can't shake it.. :P very nice video, btw, and your baby is so cute! :3

I think that there is another big reason why women cover their mouth when they laugh. In the history of Japan, during many centuries there was a tradition called "ohaguro" お歯黒 that consisted in dyeing women's teeth black. There are different theories around the reasons why they did this, but what is known is that because of ohaguro women have been covering their mouth during centuries, and this gesture has passed through generations. Google it for more info~
@Euleogy
@Euleogy 10 жыл бұрын
Dying their teeth, to my knowledge, was a prestigious thing. Girls' teeth were dyed by choice of their mothers to show that they were old enough to be a woman. I don't think they would hide their mouths for that reason specifically.
@PianoHaiku
@PianoHaiku 10 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, that is correct, however in many cases it was done without the consent of the woman. It later became a social norm to dye the wife's teeth black after marriage. Women had to go through it for centuries but as they approached the end of the 19th century nobody liked this anymore and it looked awful to the eyes of western people, so with the attempt of the Japanese government to modernize the country, they decided to prohibit this activity. The gesture, however, remains present today.

About the pronunciation: is almost the same as te portuguese linguage we use here in Brazil, also italian (another idioma, beyond japanese I'm studying ) and spanish. But very diferent frmm other latim linguage: franch and very dfferent from gemanic idioms such as english and german. But, for example, our vowels has exactly the same pronunciationa as japanese, but with the same order (A,E,I,OU) as in english.

Very interesting, and beautifully explained, as usual. In terms of topics suggestion I stronly believe that explaining the deep meanings of Japanese traditions, behaviours, way of thinking and acting is more than enough and very, very suitable for you. Sure, if you see something interesting when on trips or holydays throughout Japan please share it if you do have the time. You have a very bussy family life and we all understand and appreciate your efforts to keep your channel alive, and even more, thriving.

komori841 "Because I am Native Japanese,even my english is not good," Hold on now! One of the very reasons why you can focus on and explain Japanese culture to people like me is because your English is good. Being modest must be part of Japanese culture too, or is it just you? :) Being Native Japanese is hardly a precursor for bad English, is it? I know this not to be true either - I just watched this video as proof.

I noticed that (hiding your mouth when laughing) with Korean and Chinese women too, I always thought it's because they were shy haha. I noticed one more interesting thing with Japanese and Asian women in general - they are not shy to wear super short mini skirts and shorts and show their legs a lot, but they almost never wear low cut dresses or blouses...They always cover that area even when it's super hot, as well as the upper arm. Why is that? In Europe most people think showing your legs is more sexy and provocative than for example wearing a low cut top or showing your arms, especially when it's hot. I think it's an interesting difference :)

This custom is very interesting. I have seen some women do this here in the U.S. also, but i believe here it is probably more of feeling that their teeth, or smile is not what people would consider to be pretty enough. I say if you got a smile use it as much as you can. By the way love your necklace. Noticed you took it off toward the end of the video. Sweet Pea must have gotten a hold of it.

It was cute at the end when the pitch of your voice went up slightly. Also, the mouth covering might not be exclusive to Japan. Having been born in Romania, most of our "high class" women tend to do cover their mouths when smiling and laughing. And, you normally don't see a village girl with a sensu (fan). The mouth covering typically comes from the idea of modesty. Now I live in the US (California), and I still see women coming from Romania who cover their mouth when smiling or laughing. Keep up the great work!

Something I noticed... One of my host aunts noticed that I was using my fingers to count something while she was talking with her friends. She and her friends were curious and asked me what I was counting. I was honest and told her that I was counting every time one of them said: Ne. They all became self conscience after that during their conversation as I still kept counting. One of them was addicted to the word and soon the whole group was laughing and the offender giving me a verbal lashing-with lots of 'ne' in it. Everybody was laughing.

Thank you for your videos! I will be going to Japan for a year to teach English, study/train karate, and learn about the culture. What your videos offer are unique insight into Japanese culture. A topic I would like you to make a video about is how can a foreigner show a Japanese girl he is interested in her. My experience has been that I have made Japanese girls uncomfortable because I am too blunt/direct. How can I show a Japanese girl I want to date her without being perceived by her as being too blunt? Similarly, how do I know if she is interested in me? Japanese girls are so shy and subtle!

Thank you very much for another interesting video! I've also noticed that. It's especially common on the tv (at least that's what I've noticed). Is it considered as rude or not feminie when you don't hide your mouth when laughing? I laugh and smile a lot, sometimes I unconsciously cover my mouth but most of the time I don't, so I've been wondering about that.

I used to hide my mouth with my hand when I was a boy, out of embarrassment about my stutter. High tones are annoying - they seem disingenuous to me, even vapid. My mother (British) cured me of my habit of saying 'eh?' all the time (we Canadians are known for this) by always interjecting 'Bee' right after, to make me aware how often I said it. (Eh = A, so A, B). I have noticed that 1st and sometimes 2nd generation Asian-Canadians cover their mouths when laughing, which is really cute.

The japanese women i have met never hide her mouth, yet i have see japanese women who do it, mostly in tv. I already knew about the high tone and why they use it, also maybe is because im straight, but i think the high tone is charming. Also, when i was in japan, i saw how the turistic guides change their voices, the women make them more ellegant, may be cuz they were using honorific form, and the men get them more entusiastic.

I find it interesting how customs from the past carry on to the present. Or at least remnants of them. When was it custom for Japanese women to shave their eyebrows? Or is that just something I saw in a samurai movie? The high pitched voice sounds more feminine and cute. But to hear it all day might be annoying.

Shaving our eyebrows,it has started in Heian era too. ( Actually I did not know it, so I investigated) In Meiji-era, around 19 century, the government banned to shave it, because it is not suitable to modern life style. Thanks for asking, this could also be really interesting topics!

I'm glad that custom was bamned. Thanks for looking it up. I was worried that maybe it was just something I saw in a movie that wasn't true. Please, don't ever try to bring that custom back. Lol

Very funny and interesting video. Sometimes there can be a thin line between cute and irritating haha. I hear the vocal dynamics in movies, anime etc. The female characters with the lower voices are always the more clever, assertive ones.
