So, how do you see the world?? When you recreate it in 3D, what parts of it do you notice most? The answer to that question combined with your target poly will be your Modeling Style - The better you become at your art, the more clearly your style will shine through, so keep practicing, and don't forget to have fun on the way :)

I find most "Find your art style" videos very vague - "just look around the internet for inspiration and find something you like, then copy it". With this vid you've given a straight to the point direction how to do it, by asking yourself what's important to you while drawing or sketching. Really interesting video with good perspective on art and how to give it your own interpretation.

Can I just say as someone with an extremely demanding day job, all these recent tutorials about simplifying my art process to squeeze in 3D art projects on even my busiest days are an absolute godsend. I figured out for myself that I may need to just focus on 3D modeling characters for at least a year instead of jumping from one medium or software to the next on a whim like I’ve been doing for the past...7 years, at least until I can get a job that takes up less of my time energy. Once again RS. You got it buddy. There is a lot of information in that whole 6 minutes and 20 seconds. And its not super high concept stuff, but it's stuff that people, myself included, just don't think about. So I commented about my comic last video, and I was just working on a new scene and realized something. I am trying to make this whole comic more streamline for ease of production since I am doing everything(Writing, illustration, etc.), but I LOVE details and shapes. Belt buckles, zippers, wrinkles, all that shit. But I have been struggling against the desire to detail shit in order to be able to produce something a little quicker. And it took someone SAYING something about it (RoyalSkies in this video) to make me realize that's what I was doing. Of course I have a deadline as to when I want to start my actual production of the series, but that's no excuse to make it sloppy to produce it. So.. If I need to, I'll push back my start by date to make the comic that I would want to read, I'll take the time I need and want to create something I love. Just putting my two cents in.
@TheRoyalSkies4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think just being real with your deadlines is a great way to manage your goals if you know they are big. Most small studios have the problem of estimating the release date "assuming everything goes perfect, it will be done in 6 months". But, of course, that's never what happens. The smart studios, go ahead and say "It will be done in a year" even if they are confident it can be done in 6 - Glad you found an answer to your comic, and when you finish it, definitely let me know on twitter or something. Would love to check it out!

I actually tried to figure out my style on the next tree I saw, though what do you do when you look at a tree (as they change colour) and see all the shades of colour, all the leaves rustling in the wind, the occasional bare branches, a bird flutting in and out. The contrast of the entire tree against the blue sky and still green grass, how it merges yet stands out against other trees around it. The knots of wood, where it has split and grown over time. The more I thought, the more details I identified and I couldn't find a place to start if I were to recreate it, there were too many unique factors going on. So I took a step back, and just took a quick look at another tree and figured out what was the first thing I picked up on. Turns out it was the silhouette and basic colours. Maybe styles can come from what you notice first. General Shape: 5 Detail: 2 Accuracy: 3 Colour: 4 Single Focus: 0 Include Environment: 1

Now I feel like a whole world of art is open to me that I hadn't fully seen before. Huge thanks! Now to answer your question for the comment section. Thinking about how I make art, for me it's most important to nail the vibe, personality, and/or essence of the thing. My art style: Outlines first, shape is very important to me I like to use thicker, darker lines to outline whole sections of characters, and thinner ones within to capture details (this comes from my constant sketching with only a mechanical pencil, so in order to preserve my idea I would go back over earlier outlines again as I was making details) I'm trying to use a toon shader to capture this, but I suppose now I need to figure out how to translate this into a 3d model. I love things with angles, like robots, knights, and buildings, but I'll have to play around to see what works for smoother shapes. Maybe my characters need to have more angular features

I've had trouble with uv mapping and texturing so my models are really simple / flat, but I've been playing around with shaders and now I think they look more decent. Looking forward for that anime style shader, maybe that can help me improve my models, keep up the good work.

Great advice! As for me that tree would be a 2D Pixel art on very low poly 3D terrain with plenty of black void and done up with Raytracing. As that is my 3D art style the Paper Mario 1/Doom/ Super Mario 64 art style but not even that I I don't use texures just flat colors with really nice modern lighting... Infact it's like my Pixel art style where it is low res even for pixel art but flush with detail and using the HDR pallet to get color acuacy with flat light and the only shading is done to help define shapes.

general shape 5 detail 3 accuracy 2 color 2 single focus 4 include environment 3 As you said, you are a man of shapes, however I am a man of perspective. I believe that the focus on the perception of how the drawing is viewed is everything, which is probably why I thought holographic trading cards and lenticular prints were so cool as a kid and why I love foreshortening. Perspective is everything and you need good composition and understanding for this but not necessarily a lot of time or really anything else, just good execution of 3d on a 2d plane.

Just two things: 1) 3:44 - left image looks like an abstractionism to me which is kind of 3D low poly equivalent, right image is kind of super-realism which is equivalent to 3D high poly. Top image is a schematic realism which is 3D mid poly which is more about more clear detalization when down image is also realism but is more about style than details. 2) I think people basically divided in two categories. First category has their own view on things and realize it at some point so could make a skill from it (making it better and more unique) and represent something original even though every style is obviously based on style of someone else (except for ancient people with rock paintings). Second category (like me) is about people which can't discover their own style so easily since already have strong taste preferences in terms of another's works and kinda biased because of it so anything what doesn't look like your favorite style looks awfully wrong to you so you don't even care about a technique and practical quality in the end of the day, it's like a "copy syndrome" so you don't have any freedom to develop your own style.

Hmmmm, for me it's definitely all about the tree, but specifically it's the basic shape and colors that are most important to me. Thinking about it like that, I can easily say the same thing about the rest of my artwork - I'm a 2D artist currently and I mostly draw stylized horses. I often don't even shade them because details and shading isn't what's important, but instead it's usually what the shapes, body language, and colors convey. I only add backgrounds and shading to pieces that really call for it.

In regardsd to the tree, I don't think the accuracy matters a whole lot; the shading can be simple and the details small, it just needs to resemble a tree. The colors are the what makes the art look good, in my opinion, it can be whatever shape, whatever form, even just squares on a canvas, but, if they have complimentary colors that are pleasant to see it's gunna be alright with me.

General Shape: 4 Detail: 2 Accuracy: 0 Color: 5 Single Focus: 3 Inclute Environment: 1 I'm all in for that sweet sweet Anime Toon Shader. It just looks so beautiful to me, and getting it right is what I'm passionate about! However, I don't really know what poly-count I really wanna go for. I do not want it to look blocky, I want it to be as smooth as it can get, but I do not want to spend my time getting the most complex detail with thousands of verticies. So I guess, that means Mid-Poly? I'm always about the personality of something. Which is why I most love creating characters. And to me, that personality mostly shows in the color, the shape of the face, it's individual elements, the hairstyle. And while I don't want to keep those characters too contained, the "single focus" point actually made me realize... that I kinda wanna do just that! I want to have - maybe not always just one - but few things that really capture the character in every single aspect. Like I have a character that's all about Wind. Uncontainable, out there, smoothly flowing along, always feeling like a fresh breeze whenever you were stuck in boredom. Or one character, that is represented by roses, a bloody red, proud and offensive side, yet also beautiful, elegant, and somewhat fragile deep down inside. That character, combined with the gaze of a hawk, that helps to always keep it focussed on that one goal it proudly chases.
@TheRoyalSkies4 жыл бұрын
Glad you're looking forward to the Anime Toon Shader :) I've actually gone through lots of failed versions of this shader. My first attempts with the anime shader looked like really cheap anime because the poly-count wasn't high enough. So, I'd say mid-poly is healthy for that kind of style if you want it too look smooth. You don't need things to be supper high poly in order for it to be smooth. The only places I would say you might want to have more poly is in the hair. A huge part of Anime is in the hair, and when the hair doesn't look silky smooth, that's when it start to look cheap. From your description, it sounds like you really like the idea of personifying concepts. And, if that's the case, there is an extra element to character design that you don't see many people talk about, but it's really important. And, that's background 'aura' and special effects. For example, for that wind character you were describing, in the final render, I would have have streaks of wind constantly hugging and gliding past her body, her hair would be in constant blowing animation, and you might even see leaves constantly falling down/blowing around her. Those extra special effect details are super important when you want to add the 'icing on the cake' for characters like that -

Accuracy: 3 (Reason : Sometime character and our stuff will slightly deform and wrong scaling, i don't want 100% right, 80% right is enough.) Color : 5 (Reason : Color speak story, and most of all that is what make my characters stand out.) Single Focus : 3 (Reason : I want more the whole scene feel more than just few stuff i focus on.) Also 3 Shape 3 Details 4 Accuracy 4 Color 5 Focus 1 Environment That's for character/objects. If we're talking scenes as a whole… 2 2 1 3 4 1 Old video and you probably don't check comment on old stuff but this was such an eye opener i gotta write it down.

when I see trees , I see respiration and photosynthetic reactions. I see how can we make the trees more powerful to save the earth. (I was a science student but now I have joined the art)

I'd draw the greenery of the tree and the lush leaves. Just found your channel. Very cool!

How interesting. I never really thought of this because every single one of my art classes forced my work to a grade rather than to a piece of art- which always came out looking like garbage to me (not others). On top of that, we weren't really able to find our art style if they taught us it- and they never really did. A lot of my schools had this "barcode" or "fall in line" mentality that I could never get into and that eventually turned me into the artist I am today. My art style always depends on what I NEED to achieve and no matter what, it looks like I'm fighting with an inner demon. That is why general shape, detail, accuracy, color, single focus, and include environment all shine an array of 0-5 for each and every one of them because it is all situational to me. I am sorry if this is contradictory to your video @RoyalSkiesLLC- it is just unfortunate that my experiences have turned out pushing me into this, "whatever" it is of an artist.

You're cool man. What you are is a technical artist. Generally, Art schools these days are focused on making sure the students they produce will be useful to the jobmarket, so theirs a focus on being able to be flexible and do whatever style is needed of you depending on the client. It sounds like this has made you a bit of a shape shifter, you're style is whatever your client needs it to be, It's a very powerful ability, and I think you should be proud because it's also very useful- I'd still bet my money though, even if we put you in a room with 5 other art students. You're tree would not look the same as the others. I'm real curious what it would look like, especially compared to your peers. But, I'm sure it would accents that are specific to your preferences -

@@TheRoyalSkies Lately I've been wondering, is there anything Royal Skies LLC can't do? The content, the presentation, a good sense of who your audience is, it's all so annoyingly perfect. And now I read this and realize that I found a flaw: this guy can't spell for shit. Thank you for being human, and for another quality upload!

@@TheRoyalSkies You're right; I'm sure my art would be different compared to everyone else too. With all of the experience I have gained, most games and art eventually falls into conceptualism, but is the biggest reason why I love the art from video games. There is so much about it I wish I could go into depth with, if only programming was my strong suit.

I actually found him because I'm super big into play cards and it turns out he was the artist of the Angelorium deck, which is probably my favorite :)))

@@TheRoyalSkies Yeah I know he does some art for MTG as well. Like Animar and Pharika. I used to play alllll the time.

Does the greedy artstyle exist? Because I want it all, I want the detail, I want the silhouette, I want to see the bigger picture. But this video really got me thinking.
@TheRoyalSkies4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you basically are a photorealistic guy :) It's a beautiful artstyle, just remember to keep your projects small and focused to 1 thing. Like, 1 character. One weapon, and maybe if you want a background, you should just download it -
@TheHustler2454 жыл бұрын
@@TheRoyalSkies And yet I'm nowhere near good enough to do photorealistic! Haha. Honestly I'm doing what you are doing I think, a mid poly artstyle for game development. But god I love high poly stuff as well. Your videos are great and I've learned a lot in such a short time. I'm definitely coming back every video, I was super stoked on your videos on mo cap with an Xbox kinext, can't wait to give it a go.

Shape: 5 Detail: 2.5 color: 1.5 Accuracy: 3.5 include Environment: Yes I personally think that everything in life is built up of these fundamental shapes and when you first look at something, these shapes give a sense of what that thing is on the inside.

My issue is, while I can make something I look at and think "Ok yeah that looks cool, I like that!", maybe because I know it so well (and know how many hours I put into getting a stupid little button in JUST the right orientation), it never 'wows' me. I'm never blown away by my own art. Maybe that's just how it will always be, but I never like my own stuff as much as the artists I admire.
