HI Joe, wishes from Switzerland. Your "Tooling Course" that we follow and we saw many times to fix the gesture in the mind is very important and a big help. Really. Next week we'll receive the Hermann Oak 8/9 oz VegTan leather !! It took long time before the reseller shipped out. So we will have next week the completed set of Barry King tools, the 20 oz maul - the course followed many times and with the new HO leather will be exciting to see what we will be able to do. Super useful info! Being a broke as hell broken old shell of the man I used to be…. I found that it’s nearly as good to just take however many widths of beveler you use, and if you’ve go5 the right cheep Tandy version, there’s enough meat on them to grind the bevel back and put a new face on it to ride along your knife line and you can pretty easily modify some cheap beginner tools to function more like the high dollar Barry King steep bevels. I did 3 different widths…. Barely use the narrow one, if ever. But the medium comes in real handy on scrolls n other tighter turns. Regardless…give it a think n maybe it’ll be good for u too.

I wish you’d do a video explaining all the differences and specs on Barry King bevelers. For example the different angles, the different checkered patterns (medium, matte, etc). I bought the XX Steep set because you use it so much. I love them too but I wanted something between standard and XX Steep. I can’t find any by Barry King. Or maybe I have and just don’t know what they are called.

(i) I liked this video very much. You do a great job of showing not only the faults, but how to correct them: thank you! (ii) I noticed in your opening segment the NIV Bible in the background over your left shoulder - very cool! (iii) at approx 6:15 mark when you do some shading and beveling - how did you find a song with a beat cadence to match your mallet hits? That was astounding and I am so impressed!! Does using the expensive tools like the Barry King tools really make that much difference over the much less expensive “beginners” tools? I really can’t afford the extra cost but if it will noticeably improve my work I would slowly pick them up. Thank you for this site as you sharing experience helps so much!

The course is broke into 12 different sections making it easier to walk through at your own pace. There are over 2 hrs of video covering the basic fundamentals of which tools I use, where, and how to use them. Then there is a pattern you download and I walk you through tooling that step by step.

I love this video Joe. Thank you. I have been practicing my beveling and had a question. I make a cut with my swivel knife, I bevel it and it looks "ok" from above. In your video you are showing the beveled side on top of the cut. What does the other side of the cut look like (the side where the toe fits into the cut). Mine still looks like rough leather after beveling. From the videos it doesn't seem like your lines look like that. I hope what I am describing makes sense. Any pictures or help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Quality of leather will make a bit of difference for sure. I run checkered bevels so I never use a push beveler.

Our experience if this can help ... We started with some tools for "beginners". We watched the videos from Joe and from other experienced guys. Not only for carving and tooling but all the activities to make anything with leather. Fortunately many tools we bought are good quality Made in EU or US (not imported from far east) The "beginners tools" - Swivel knife, tools and all the stuff used to work are now completely changed after only 2 months. Barry King for tooling & swivel + mauls + push beveler + awl + edgers + stitch groover and so on. Make non sense to buy cheap stuffs that will be changed. Who more sped less spend.

@@joemeling3216 do you tend to like a heavier maul or a lighter one? At the moment I just have a cheap one from hobby lobby but considering getting a Barry king. Also just got the Barry king 1/4” thin swivel knife blade as well. The blade I have at the moment I feel is just to thick. Also really hope you can make it to Texas for a class. some hands teaching would be awesome.

@@grantstansberry3277 I hope to get down there as well! I use a 20oz maul. It’s really just whatever is comfortable. I have a heavier one that I’ll use on basket stamps and border stamps just to set them in deeper without swinging as hard but I like the 20 oz for all my floral work.
