From experience, cutting into multiple small branches and vines can also cause a well tension chain to pop off. One branch at a time, even if they are small, according to the instruction manual.

Very useful! Haven't had this happen, surprisingly given my past "crimes against proper chain tension". Die grinder seemed pretty fast, before then I was thinking "this could really go for some kind of fixture to hold better than a hand and top of a vise". Just tried a pneumatic die grinder for the first time recently, was lovely, now I need one of those flap discs for it. Thanks!

Thanks so much for showing how this is done. As you said, it happened on a very new chainsaw and I would have hated to buy a new chain. This is my first chainsaw and I wouldn't have had a clue how to fix the problem. I ended up using a Dremel with a small grinding disc on it, clamping the chain flat onto the workbench and coming at it from above, then sliding the grinding disc underneath and doing the underside with the top of the disc, so I didn't even have to flip the chain over. This worked great, 15 minutes later I was back to cutting.

Dony, MUCH MUCH easier to put the chain back on sagging loose, run for a few seconds, tighten half-way. Repeat. Let the burrs grind themselves off on the bar as they travel around. There is plenty of metal on the bar to remove the tiny burrs. Been a pro doing this for 30 years and it always works.

I kicked the chain on my MS 170 by using a Super, full-chisel chain while cutting up small branches, but failing to keep the RPM's up that the cutters grabbed and threw the chain off the bar. I learned the hard way and spent a lot of time deburring the drive links. I made sure the bar was undamaged as well. The chain tension was properly adjusted when it got thrown off the bar. I use my 015 with a Micro, safety chain to cut small branches now, and keep the throttle at full tilt.

So glad you mentioned pulling up the bar before tightening those nuts! It’s crucial! Otherwise the bar will rise and overtighten the chain and likely snap the chain when you go to cut. Excellent video! Thankyou for sharing this important information.
@schlomoshekelstein908 Жыл бұрын
if the bar rises the chain gets LOOSER. if you pull the bar up and the bar DROPS somehow, it will TIGHTEN the chain
@markyoungoutdoors2497 Жыл бұрын
@@schlomoshekelstein908 I respectfully disagree. Decades ago I learned this first hand working at a golf course. I kept breaking the cutting chain because I didn’t hold the tip of the bar up as I tightened the bar nuts good and snug. You have to check your chain slack while your holding the tip up while the nuts are almost tight. Once the tension is right, you once again hold the tip up as you snug up those two nuts. I’ve never again had a chain break in the decades since learning this concept.😊

@@donyboy73 I wish I could show this to you in person. It is completely safe and easy. Most burred chains will fit in the nose and back of the bar after you loosen the tension, and a few revolutions with the engine will remove the burrs and the chain drops right in.

First, thank you for posting this video. I believe the tension came loose during cutting a thick branch and it got kinked and I used it right away without checking the tension. The chain came off and when I put it back together, engine started fine but after releasing the safety the chain did not turn and caused bit of smoke. After watching your video, I believe it is due to burred chain causing it not to turn. I stopped after couple attempts to run it realizing there is a problem with how the chain was difficult to slide it in the bar groove. Will repairing the burred chain make it run again? I only had this chainsaw for little over a year using it to cut small trees and thick branches around the house several times. Thanks in advance!

I mounted the bar and chain on a chainsaw body, tensioning the chain loosen and ( the drive links not sit in the bar groove completely) moving it by hand it moves freely. But tighten it to a standard chainsaw tensioning, (when the chain drive links fits in the bar groove), the chain didn't move freely, though the chain drive links fits the bar and run smoothly. The pitch & gauge of the chain must match the pitch of the drive sprocket and the pitch & gauge of the bar. If these elements don’t match then damage will occur. If you buy a longer/shorter bar & chain, make sure they are the same pitch & gauge as your current chain, and you won't need to change the sprocket.
