Joe, Your videos have been very helpful, thank you. I got a job with a property management company a couple years back. We manage over 40 units at Aina Nalu. I did maintenance work for many years on the main land . As you now, tips and tricks are always helpful. You saved me many hours troubleshooting issues at that property. The first time I came across one of your videos I was doing a kitchen faucet replacement at Aina Nalu. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out how the thing was attached. I was quite surprised when I KZbind it , and found a video shot at the exact same property I was working at, , in the same model condo. I appreciate the assistance, and hope to bump into you one day at the property.

The clicking sound can also be caused by the blades not being tightly screwed in or more commonly from dust build up on the blades which causes it to be off balanced.

The cotter pin could be a little loose and wiggly, and as the fan turns slightly banging again the fan's metal housing, thus causing the ticking sound. That was the case on one of my fans. I adjusted it a little and no more ticking noise. By the way, the screws on my fan were all tight and did not require adjusting.

Not sure what could be causing your issue but one time I had a noisy motor & got up there & sprayed some silicone spray down into the vent slits on the motor & the noise went away. It might be something as simple as that. don't overdo it though & let sit for a few minutes before turning back on. You don't want to fry something since you just sprayed something wet in there so I wouldn't do this unless all else fails. Joe :0

It functions like a screw, it just doesn't have an indentation for a screwdriver. I spent a good few hours on my fan. I completely dismantled it. I even removed it from the ceiling, which was dumb to do by myself because holding that thing up with 1 hand while screwing it back in with the other was not fun. Inside the fan there was something (let's call it the master screw) that I tightened. I reassembled the fan and it works wonderfully, just as well as it did 10 years ago!

I believe that plastic cube is needed in order for the light kit to work as well as the different speeds of the ceiling fan. When you attach the cube, make sure the wire holes are in the right position. look in the cube & you will see what I mean. Joe :0

I just had a very similar problem, however the screws in my fan were tight. Turns out the cotter pin got a little loose and that's what caused the clicking or tapping. Just a tiny squeeze to the cotter pin with some pliers and the clicking is gone.

Thanks for your reply! I found the blue wire coming down but it must be dead. Still can't get the darn light [new or old] to work. I'm not electrician enough to follow it up into the ceiling. Maybe I'll test the power at the wall switch next. There are two side by side so...Thanks Joe.

If you are referring to the tester....yes. One end of tester to black & the other end of tester to white & it should light your red light up. Make sure to flip your light switch to check. Your light switch might be defective if your wires don't show hot when turning on the light switch. Joe :0

I didn't expect you to reply, heh your like a celebrity I know you get a ton of questions. My ceiling fan I think is wire wrong it stop working and only spins slowly now on every speed..
@VideoJoeKnows
@VideoJoeKnows 10 жыл бұрын
Has your ceiling fan always run on just the slow speed? Most ceiling fans are straight forward with the wiring.....white to white...black to black. Do you have a pull chain on your ceiling fans that controls your fan speed? A pull chain should be there for the light (if you have a light kit) then a separate pull chain for the fan speed. Is there a hole on the base where it looks like for a pull chain but the pull chain is not there? I think someone jerked it out & it was pulled out with the fan being on the low speed. Could that be your issue? Joe :0

Video Joe, THANK YOU so much for your video on "How to fix a clicking ceiling fan". I LOVE the way you go through the steps very elementary like. This is exactly what I needed to see and hear. I just watched it and can't wait to go home tonight and tighten up those screws and hope that works. I now have some hope. The clicking noise my fan is making is like torture to me. Instead of taking a baseball bat to it, I can now try this. Thanks again!!
@VideoJoeKnows
@VideoJoeKnows 10 жыл бұрын
Ha! Try out these steps & see if it fixes your clicking. Hope it does. Are all ceiling fans created equal? NO! There might be another issue going on. Look & see if you see a cotter pin on the top of the motor attaching to the vertical extension rod & see if that is snug. I heard from one viewer that they fixed their clicking by removing the cotter pin & rebending the cotter pin to fit snug & that was what their particular clicking was from. Let me know what happens! VideoJoeKnows You're right, mine had a cotter pin, so I tightened that down. My son is coming over and I'll have him put some muscle on it too. So sorry for not responding to you sooner. Sounds like the screws have loosened up over time & came out?...or the guy who installed the ceiling fan years ago forgot to install them?..If the ceiling fan is a really old school old rickety looking ceiling fan it might be time to remove it & install a new ceiling fan. You can get pretty good ceiling fan these day for around $150 but then again you need to go about removing & installing a new ceiling fan. I have all those videos on my channel & you & a friend could do it or you could get a friend to watch the videos I have so they can do it for you. Just go to my main KZbin channel page then click on playlists then scroll down to ceiling fans. Or....you could try to get some screws that will fit up in there. Hope this helps!

I have two flush mount fans (about a year old) but one of them makes the same clicking sound that yours did----the clicking is as fast as whatever speed I put it on. I've checked the fan blade screws and they're all tight, but the noise is making me crazy!! Could the clicking be anything that might be a safety/fire hazard?? Since it's a flush mount with no visible mounting screws, is there anything I can do?? THANKS!!
@VideoJoeKnows
@VideoJoeKnows 10 жыл бұрын
Rats! Not sure what you can do with your flush mounted clicking ceiling fan. Can you google your ceiling fan name brand then find it & see if they have a downloadable owner's manual where you can look through the troubleshooting area & see if they address the annoying clicking sound you are experiencing. Another thing you can do is go back to the hardware store & ask a salesperson what they might suggest. since your ceiling fan is still fairly knew, depending where you purchased it from, you might be able to get the hardware store to accept your clicking ceiling fan to where you can return it & get another one. Or just return it & get your money back & get a different kind. Most stores will give you your money back or give you a credit for their store, if you are very unhappy with their product. Ask to see a manager & they should do your right, if you decide to return it. Is there anywhere you can see where you can spray some silicone spray in there to see if that stops the clicking noise? You might have to remove some of your ceiling fan to be able to get up in there. Let me know what you come up with. Thanks for your message. Joe :0

Trudy...I just installed a brand new flush mount. When I got it all installed there was an ever-loving, all-annoying click sounded just like this. I took it all apart and kept spinning it and taking it apart step by step checking screws and everything. Found there was a loose wire in the motor and when it spun it hit a little screw making all the noise. A little electrical tape to hold in place and wallah....no more noise. Was a bummer to have to take it apart but now working silently. :) Worth a try?

It could be the motor itself. You could get up there & try spraying some silicone spray down in through the motor housing vent slits & see if that helps. Don't over spray in there as not sure if this may cause a short when turning on the motor. I would try this as a last resort. Sounds like your ceiling fan is old & ready for replacement. Try the spray & if all else fails, you might want to think about replacing your fan with a new one. Good luck. Joe :0

Hmmm not sure why a ceiling fan would be making squeaking noises but you might want to spray a silicone spray in there to see if the squeaking noise stops. Also make sure all the screws are tight for ceiling fan blades, fan blade connections & so forth. Let me know. Thanks!

This ceiling fan brand is a Fanimation & the style is an Islander. Try any ceiling fan/lighting store & if they don't have it, they can probably order it. Or try the internet & you might be able to purchase there. They're kind of expensive though. This one was around $700 & that didn't include a light kit. Joe :0

Joe, I have a large 5 blade ceiling fan that spins pretty hard on high. Its a flush mount though and doesn't have the same mounting mechanism as in your video. On high, my fan makes random POPS and Snaps, sort of like someone popping their brother with a hand towel. Not a little clicking as in your fan. Everything seems tight, and its had this problem since day 1. Question: Can ceiling fan blades cavitate and flex and then pop to release stored energy in the rotating blade, creating the hard pop that I'm hearing? It doesn't sound electrical - it really sounds like a mechanical pop, such as the popping of a towel. Sometimes I'll get four or five in a two second interval, then nothing for a few seconds, and then perhaps another pop or two, and so on. Thanks!

Popping. Huh. Have never heard someone have that issue before. All the fan blades are tight & the fan blade bracket screws are tight? Do you have an owner's manual? If you have the manual you can go to the troubleshooting area & see if they mention the snapping. Or go online & google the type of ceiling fan you have & see if you can view an owner's manual then go to the troubleshooting area. Let me know if you find out what the popping noise was caused by. How about going to your hardware store & talk to someone in the lighting/ceiling fan department & see if they know what could be the issue. Thanks for your message. Joe :0

How old is your ceiling fan? It might be time to replace. Can you get up there & try spraying silicone spray down into the fan motor housing? That might do the trick. Don't spray too much down in there & wait a few minutes before turning the ceiling fan back on. Turn it by hand at first to lube the area. Then wait a few minutes before turning back on. Can you see any other areas which may have set screws which may have come loose, causing the ceiling fan to wobble then tick? :0

Maggie Frederick The direction serves a purpose: counterclockwise in the summer to draw up and circulate cool air, clockwise in the winter to draw hot air downwards. A properly installed ceiling fan should work in both directions without clicking noises.

Did you tighten the set screws Like I show in the video? After that if it still clicks, try spraying a silicone spray into the motor housing. Just a little. Don't overdo it. Try that & let me know if it stops clicking. Joe :0

This type of ceiling fan fly wheel is rubber & seems to be out of round for a reason....?....as when the ceiling fan goes around, I can see the flywheel wobble but it doesn't effect the fan blades at all....when it's going right. Not sure why they made this fan brand like this. Joe :0

Hmmmm are there any moving parts that could be loose that need to be tightened up like the ceiling fan blade connections, etc.? Your mounting bracket at the ceiling level could be loose creating the click noise & you would need to remove the ceiling fan to check that out. Did you ever find out what was causing the clicking noise?

@VideoJoeKnows
@VideoJoeKnows 9 жыл бұрын
+vamdolly Not sure what else it could be. Rewatch this video & maybe an idea will pop into your mind on something else to check. Another thing you can do is go to your local hardware store & speak to a salesperson who is familiar with ceiling fans. Maybe they might have another idea for you. Good luck. The ceiling fan you got came with an owner's manual with the manufacture's phone number? Maybe you can call them & see what they might have to say. Good luck!

If it's not loose screws, you likely need to rebalance it which is actually quite simple. (Google "rebalancing a clicking ceiling fan" for detailed instructions.) Your local hardware store should carry a kit which will include a weight BUT a strip of tape and 6-8 pennies will do the trick just as easily. Best of luck. ✌

I've heard of people balancing their ceiling fans that way but I have not had a need to do it that way just yet. Plus the weights etc. may be difficult to attach to a ceiling fan blade such as the ones I was working on since the backside is not flat. But thanks for the info as any viewer who choose to read your message will benefit from it. Thanks again! Joe :0

I had this really annoying problem too. It's just that the center post is designed poorly. When I tightened all the screws and the mounting bracket up top, it clicks a lot less. Before this it used to click all the time and constantly, now it does a tiny, barely noticeable click once a min.
