Thank you! Watching your videos (and some accidental joy con damage from my dad who actually knows a bit about electronics repair) has given me the confience to get into it myself. I tried severeal times using a soldering iron to get the joystick out of a ps4 controller, but I just couldn't get the solder all out of the holes. Finally I was able to get my hands on a hot air station and I just finished using it for the first time. WOW!!! Actually game changing. A minute or two and I had the first one out. The blue plastic at the bottom was stringy so I turned the temp down a bit and was more patient and the second one came out no issue. Now hopefully I didn't roast anything important, but I'm just so happy the joystick came out! Thank you sir for making such a positive impact on so many people and saving so many electronics from the garbage. I hope to make this into a fun and useful hobby. I'm sure I'll make many mistakes along the way but I'll learn a lot too!

This is gold! I've replaced the whole analog stick many times... little did I realize you can take off the sensors and clean them. Since this video, I've since replaced the sensors from a new analog stick, without replacing the potentiometers and it seemed to work on one controller... But like everything, its a hit or miss, didn't work on another controller. Now instead of removing the whole analog stick, I'll just be replacing the potentiometers from now! Thanks!
@enthusiasticbanana62322 жыл бұрын
HUGE TIP - For replacing a potentiometor, if you pry it away from the main assembly (like you would to clean it) and bend it back and forth till it snaps off from the pins, that makes it so much easier because then you can just desolder each pin and pull them out one at a time. That way you don't even need a solder sucker or solder wick.

Thank you soooo much! I bought a spare analog stick (the square with two potetinometers) from a Xbox One controller for 1 USD and I fixed my Series controller up and down stickness and drifting by doing the method 2! The only difference is that I got the small spart (metal ring) that you removed and, instead of putting it back after cleaning the insides of the potentiometer, I replaced with the spare part's one (since the original seemed damaged) and it worked (on second try, I had to use both metal rings from the spare potentiometers because I destroyed the first one putting it back in)!!!!!

@bufordmaddogtannen4 жыл бұрын
@@iseetrolledpeople the wipers (the little metal thingies) are not the cause of the drift (unless they are oxidized, and in that case all you need is contact cleaner). The scratched painted carbon in the green casing is the problem.
@iseetrolledpeople4 жыл бұрын
@@bufordmaddogtannen you don't need to have the scratches to have drift. Those metal, copper looking discs deform or get used and stop doing things properly.
@bufordmaddogtannen4 жыл бұрын
@@iseetrolledpeople it depends. If it's not crushed beyond repair, the wiper can be bent back so that it makes contact again. I fixed hundreds of potentiometers over the years when it was worth doing it and these ranged from console controllers to audio to general aviation equipment. As a rule of thumb, if I cannot clean the potentiometer (or bring the wiper back in shape), if I get an exact resistance value replacement I prefer to replace the whole thing.

Is there a video to change the plastic bar that the thumbsticks sit on as mine has snapped in half, or do you have to replace the whole part thanks

Man I have had so many issues replacing the joysticks and the contact on the board coming off, this is super helpful! Any idea what would cause the little metal ring around the pins on the board to come off? And is that game over for that board?

Excessive heat, or blunt force (when pulling a component when the hole is not completely solder free).

If you try method two and it doesnt work buy a NEW thumbstick of ebay and swap the ring as in method 2- this worked for me. The other thing you can do swap the rings and if the controller drifts on the opposite axis then you know it is the ring and not the potentiometer it self

What program are you using to look for stick drift after a repair?
