I wanted to let you know that my husband and I decided to tackle this repair ourselves after the repair shop wanted $80 just to look at it. We watched the video again and followed your instructions. I am happy to report that we fixed it! My sewing machine is working smoothly again and I am back to making face masks for my family and friends! Thank you so much!

Thank you for your tutorial. My CX155LA Brother sewing machine is about 5 years old, but it has about 4 hours of used and I keep it in a sewing machine case. I barely have used it because I got really sick and I had to pospone all of my crafting projects. Not I have to adjust some clothes because I lost lots of weight and my sewing machine keeps getting unthreatened and has given me the E6 code, so I checked the manual for troubleshooting and it says that don’t lubricante because it’s been lubricantes by the manufacturer for life. I am going to change the thread, needle and bobbing as suggested. If that doesn’t work, I will have my husband to open it and follow your tutorial. I opened it and it’s truly clean.😊

I inherited three machines, a Kenmore 158, a Kenmore 385 and a singer classic 385 in the classic needs to be worked on for locked up, but they were my mom's and my grandmothers. I'm actually enjoying working on these cleaning them up, getting them working, figuring out what's wrong, finding out what I need to do to do this and even learning the sew on them. This is kind of something fun. I wish I had decided to do this when my mother was still alive and was selling, but I enjoy these videos watching how to fix things

I have several little Brother sewing machines and really love them because they’re light weight so they’re very portable, have good stitch quality, lots of different stitches and easy for beginner sewists to operate. They’re not expensive so I don’t expect them to last like my Bernina workhorse but I find that by removing the bobbin case and thoroughly cleaning the area after every use heads off potential problems. Amazing how much shedding fibers and bits of thread are produced by the end of a sew day. Those fibers can easily be removed with a nice little fluffy cosmetic brush and now, thanks to you, I won’t be afraid to take any of the machines apart to check for signs of rust and loose thread. I appreciate your videos and good camera work. Fast forward... good 👍

Your video was very helpful! I was getting the E6 code on my Brother xr9000 machine. I watched your video twice, took my machine apart -- cleaned and lubricated all moving parts. The bearing was frozen to the shaft, so I used a penetrating lubricant (my husband had available) and he helped loosen the bearing. After lubricating, vacuuming and cleaning, I put everything back together. The machine works great now! Thanks for your great tutorial!

This is a valuable video. Well explained. I would suggest once a screw is removed from the case, drop the screw back into the hole upside down and put a piece of painters tape over the hole. It is easier to identify which screw goes where. I have subscribed. Thanks for sharing your skills.

Thank you so much for your video, I managed to fix my machine by myself! At first it was kind of scary to disassemble everything, I was afraid not to be able to put it back together. OMGoodness... you just helped me fix my problem and it wasn’t quite the same symptom, but essentially it was the same solution! My lower shaft had frozen and I was able to just loosen the bolts and get it to move. Great lesson on adding oil to the moving parts, so while I was in there I looked for all the metal friction points and made sure there is nothing left to clean or do before I reassemble. I want to thank you for your suggestions. I have had my Brother for 2 years and suddenly had slow stitching and the wheel was hard to turn. On your advice, I opened the case and found it was the lower shaft and bushing as you said. A couple of drops of machine oil in those areas had the shaft turning within a couple of minutes. I do plan to take my machine in for a complete cleaning. In the meantime, I can finish my project. ❤

@@SewingMachineRepairGuy Ah ah, everything comes easy with the right teacher, ;-) I'm in trouble again though. Actually I've been twice since my original E6 problem. I first had to re-adjust the hook timing, because when it moved when I took the belet off for accessing the bushing; I understand how it happened, and I found another tutorial on how to fix it and dit it, no problem until there. But then I assembled back my machine for the 3rd time....the 2 first problems seem fixed for good (busking is fixed/no more E6 message, and the hook do catch the thread again), but now as soon as I try to hit the foot control, I get an E1 error message, and the machine never starts. I've read a lot of things on this problem on the web, watched videos that seem to solve most of the E1 people's problem (like this one for instance : kzbin.info/www/bejne/anO2kIV-e7Geerc), but it is not working for me. The metal piece the guy on the video is talking about seems to work correctly in case case, it's not stuck, when the foot is down the metal piece do go to the right (and it can't go "righter", there is the plastic case after that). And when the foot is up, the metal part is perfectly vertically aligned. so for me, the problem doesn't come from the metal part or its mechanism. And I don't think the problem comes from the sensor itself either, because if my understanding is correct and the sensor is indeed the tiny plastic white part, well when the foot is up, this plastic part is indeed "pressed" (pushed back basically), and when the foot is down it's released (it comes back forward to its original position). That's how it's supposed to work, right? If so.....do you have any idea of what the problem could be? I'm really sorry to ask fro this, and in a normal situation I would go to a repair shop, but France is in lock-down for another week at least, and I compelled to this hospital coats volunteering mission (24 coats are due by Monday afternoon), so you're basically my only hope (no pressure, ah ah). Thank you so much in advance for any help you could offer (and if you can't no problem at all of course, you don't owe me anything, ;-)

There is a problem with the foot sensor, re check the connections you had to disconnect, may have swapped something.
@brunofaure5849
@brunofaure5849 4 жыл бұрын
@@SewingMachineRepairGuy yeah I've checked that already, and disconnect and reconnect everything (three times). Besides it wouldn't make sense because the problem didn't occur after I disconnected and reconnected the electronics to access the bushing, after the reconnection the engine/sensor were working fine (I did not actually sew because I had the timing problem, but the foot control was and engine were working). Problem only appeared after I fixed the hook timing, while the only part I manipulated for that was the inner belt (and its tension mechanism). Anyway thanks fro confirming that the problem is the sensor, I'll try to unmount the back of the case too to try to handle it manually and see if it changes something. Thanks again anyway for all the rest, Batman Bless Sewing Machine Repair Guy (I don't believe in God)

Next make sure the presser foot is down when you assemble. You can check to see if it is correct by pulling on the upper thread with presser foot up then down, make sure the tension gets easier with the presser foot up. If it doesn't, then you need to take apart and reassemble with presser foot down.

Nice Video ! You have a nice way of showing what you do to troubleshoot and repair. I do have one recommendation, I love an oil called Liquid Bearings full synthetic oil, I have a collection of around 25 machines and I used to need to oil them about once every six months with the Liquid Bearings oil I can go two years between oiling and any machine I go to use works great, I have found no better grease than the Tri Flow Synthetic grease and use it as well. Thanks for this great video and explanation. I had the same problem as you showed in this video - a frozen bearing. I took too much of the machine apart before I noticed it but at least I saved a trip to the repair shop. I didn't have the same oil as you used, but I did have a small (and ancient) bottle of IBM Fuser Oil (I'm a former employee and save everything). Only remaining problem is that the E6 error still occurs only when I sew faster than the slowest speed. I'm certain the machine is cleaned and threaded correctly, been doing it the same way for 8 years. Thanks again for the comprehensive lesson.

VERY INFORMATIVE AND HELPFUL VIDEO THANKYOU!! Not sure what I did, but I took it apart then put it together again and my machine was working like new!! It made a loud clanging when stitching, but now it’s silent as new! The top thread would also get locked up and snagged underneath the plate, fixed now! I have a BrotherXR3140, and it is exactly the same except for the shell to the best of my knowledge!

They're actually not bad machines, and they are good to learn on. The computerized models are less likely to injure you as well. Like all brands, the lower-end models you find in big box stores will be like this, and sewing stores will carry the higher-end ones. Even brands like Janome do this. These are more common, though, because a good machine can cost upwards and including $8000. I don't have that kind of cash lying around.

This video gives me hope. I had my machine for about 10 years and never oiled it and only cleaned under the needle plate. Then again I have used it about 5 times. I get the E6 error after like 3-4 stitches. It makes this crazy jackhammer sound and the needle wont move, thread gets jammed. I clear out and try again but to no avail same thing. So hubby and I will use your video to attempt a go. Wish me luck. Oh and I did change the needle because the previous one broke. I will also look into realignment of the needle.

Thanks for the demonstration. I was able to view your video by adding the translation and reducing the playback speed of your video. I live in France, I have a brother fs40s machine (electronic) except for a few details (and the difference that my machine has a metal frame, and a propeller motor). It has the same mechanism as that of the video. DIY, cleaning and maintaining the machine, costs almost nothing but buying the oil and grease, can save about $100, that's about the price at a technician . And you have to see the number of people who put their machine up for sale on particular auction sites to buy a new one because simply the wheel of their sewing machine no longer turns and it's just a problem that the machine s seized up and just needs cleaning, loosening, oiling and cleaning.

Thanks so much for the video! You are doing such an amazing service being that it seems that good sewing repair people are few and far between and it can cost so much (at least in my area). Please do more on the vintage machines that are hard to get much info about anymore! I would love a video on fixing a machine like the Vintage Brother "Select-O-Matic" (if you happen to ever come across one of those.) I have one I can't get to work...so sad. Also I have not seen many repair videos out there on the all metal Vintage Kenmore zig zag machines either, especially the ones that you can add cams to produce decorative stitches). Keep up with the videos! They're great!

There is actually a lot of information on vintage Kenmore and even some vintage Brother machines which I have found since becoming interested in restoration recently. The all metal ones are fantastic and are capable of giving faithful service for many more decades. In order to repair or restore any machine, be it modern or vintage, it is necessary to understand how they work. The fundamentals of all sewing machines are the same. Learn how they work and you can repair any model given the parts. This requires time and commitment, but it is worth it and I find it very rewarding. Parts (many vintage, especially Singer parts are still available and affordable) and materials are generally quite cheap. Unless you are trying to repair electronics, sewing machines are relatively easy to repair and maintain with modest hand skills. There are a lot of great resources on KZbin and also a lot of disinformation which will not damage your machine, so beware. The following KZbin channels give great advice: Andy Tube - vintage domestic machines Vintage Sewing Machine Garage - vintage domestic machines In Stitches - all types of machines Sewing Machine Repair Guy - all types of machines SewSaveMe - vintage domestic machines Alexander Dryer - vintage machines Vince J. Arcuri - vintage domestic machines City Sewing - all types of machines Sew What Maryborough - vintage machines Alex Askaroff - vintage machines Burley Sew - good interviews with a sewing machine repair man on sewing machines and sergers Superior Threads - although sales oriented there is a lot of invaluable information on threads, thread problems, needles and fault diagnosis Please be careful of vintage electrics. I hope that you find this useful - good luck! 👍

@@ivancho5854 Thank you! I am actually already subscribed to all of those you listed lol! I've seen a few on vintage Kenmores but not quite the model and issue I tend to have with them (which is something to do with the cam mechanism I think.) Andy Tube has a few on Singers with cams but I don't think on Kenmores. I still consider myself a noob when it comes to understanding the mechanics of the old zig zag machines with cams and trying to transfer the knowledge I've learned about one brand of machine to another only gets me so far. I've never seen a Brother Select-A-Matic type machine overhaul. If you know of any, please share!

@@starlit484 Hi Careen. I'm glad that you already found those channels. 👍 Ok do you have the model number of the Kenmore? Unfortunately I'm in the UK and we've never had Kenmores here (I'm jealous!), so I don't know where on the machine it's located. I know that Kenmore made lots of models and it helps to narrow it down before we dive in. I found this about the Select-O-Matic: stitchified.com/2015/11/20/the-herd-expands/ stitchified.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Brother-Super-Select-o-Matic-Manual.pdf stitchified.com/2017/06/09/brother-select-o-matic-update-and-faqs/ "This machine was based on the patents for a Singer 15 so it’s super easy to find reproduction parts." Also I've just seen a lot of original parts online, probably from a stripped machine. I just saw your post on her blog. 😁 Did you manage to get the light switch fixed? Those pages explain how to open the top, which is very helpful. By the way your model Brother looks fantastic. I really hope that you will be able to get it going again. Can you describe your problems in more detail please. Is it seized, running slow, strange noises, is it stitching but not correctly, missing parts, difficulty in operating, or is it that you would like to see a video before you open it up to service/restore? Ta, Ivan.

@@ivancho5854 Thanks for searching for me! Yes I was so grateful that she had that blog, as it helped a little. No, I never got the light situation fixed. Honestly I ended up putting the machine aside for the past couple of years and put my focus on other less complicated ones. I would have to re-evaluate it to see what the problems exactly were. It might have been a lot of seizing inside from many years of no use. I now know that the cammed machines tend to have this type of problem. I have learned a bit more in the past few years by working on other machines and reading and watching videos so I wonder whether if when I approached this machine again the problems would seem less intimidating. I will have to go back and check that one out! As far as the Kenmore goes, it's a model 90, specifically model 158.901. The machine makes beautiful straight stitches but if you try to do any of the cam or special stitches the machine just stitches in reverse!?! It also does not respond to the cams at all. It will not do anything other than a regular zig zag I believe. This machine was completely seized when I found it so it took weeks just to get parts moving. Could be that there's something still seized up inside that will not allow it to do it's thing? I appreciate that you took the time to look for help for me btw! That's very thoughtful!

@@starlit484 My pleasure. It helps me too - with my insomnia! 😂 It sounds like your strategy of putting the Brother aside was a good one. I'm sure that you would fare better now with more knowledge and experience. No need to confirm the model. Your Kenmore stitches in reverse? Witchcraft! Or maybe just due to seized parts. I'll investigate your model Kenmore, but as long as all of the gears are metal I'm sure that once you free it up it should work fine. You sound to me like you are ready to breathe life back into these charming machines! A few things that I've learnt so far that may help: Use high quality screwdrivers and always use the correct size for the screw head. Avoid brake cleaner or acetone as the likelihood of destroying your paintwork is high, rather use lots of Penetrant Oil. 3-in1 and WD-40 are good brands (I'm not referring to 3-in-1 Multi-Purpose oil, or ordinary WD-40 spray). TriFlow oil and grease are the best once it's working. Heat helps the penetrant. After applying lots of oil and penetrant to a seized Kenmore, the Vintage Sewing Machine Garage guy put it under a plastic bag outside in the direct sun (black bag would have been better). Outside is good due to fumes. Maybe it's a summer project? Next, once it's freed comes cleaning. I've seen Andy Tube washing a machine in a shower, but I think that is very risky. It's too easy to get flash rust and huge problems. Rather flush and wipe with TriFlow oil. Don't be intimidated by cams, all they do is move the needle from side to side in a sequence. They are complex with tight tolerances, so when the oil dries like varnish it acts like glue. I definitely wouldn't go taking them apart. They are actually even more complex to reassemble than they look! Also there is simply no need. Once the machine runs you could overhaul the motor if you feel capable. I have had excellent results. If required, rewiring, replacing brushes, cleaning the commutator and re-lubricating the bushings are straightforward. I really like Stevie from SewSaveMe for this (first try using an eraser to clean the carbon off the commutator). You can test a motor with a multi-meter: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3-5aIevoa6tibs Do let me know how you get on Careen. Stay safe. 👍
