How to Fix GoPro Hero 8 Lens Glass

The worst part about the GoPro Hero 8 was that they removed the ability to twist off and replace the lens cover. Yea, they brought it back for the Hero 9, but what about all of use who already have Hero 8's lying around?? Well, I just learned about a company called Camera Butter who started producing glass replacement kits for the Hero 8. The process honestly seems pretty damn easy and I'm gonna test it out today and show you guys how to do it.

3 years later - still an excellent video! I saw a video when the GoPro 8 first came out, and the guy reviewing it had it fall off of his truck bumper, and it hit perfectly on the lens cover to shatter it! This made me park my GoPro 8 until I purchased a Ulanzi metal cage for it, and at on a screw on lens protector protector! More recently, I see some slip on lens cover and lens - with a lens cap as well. I ordered on of those to check it out. No matter what though, it is possible to shatter the glass, so this video is quite valuable now too! Thanks for sharing!

one tip, use disposable gloves, so you have no problem touching any parts and leaving finger prints on it, i am doing this every time i put on a screen protector on a phone

really handy to know, just in case. I would also reccomend protecting it well, when i got my H8 I also got a tempered glass lense protector and also a clip on filter kit with a lense cap too. So if all that doesn't work to protect me, you've got my back, thanks and keep up the good work.

This is a good tip and its worth doing... The tempered glass saved the Hero 8 glass cover when my girlfriend crashed her mountain bike. Imagine my excitement when I took the tempered glass off and the GP lens was intact! The next day riding she crashed again after 100m and imagine my disappointment when she cracked the actual GP glass.... and thats why I'm watching this video.

I suppose that after putting new cover you can use heat gun for a while and it should melt to places it couldnt stick, I hope it does work this way :D

Mateusz Kobuszewski it should be , that glue stuff that’s on the new cover is like a car windshield glue it’ll stick really hard after.

I recommend using a mini suction cup to remove (with the spudger) and do the same when applying the new glass. Much more ergonomic for me.

Luckily I put protective glass covers on both the lense and rear face. Rear face I don't really care about but, lense cover is giving me an issue. When the sunlight hits the glass you see a refraction line across the video. Hopefully it is just the protective cover that sacrificed itself to protect the lens itself?

I have the Gopro hero 8 and i have scratch's and little cracks on the LCD screen on the rear. I hope Gopro does that for the rear LCD screen so it was that easy to remove.

As an additional tip I used a very small thin craft knife- the ones that are cheap and plastic, as a scraper. It fitted in round the lens and got the old sticky stuff off easily. Also, some needle point tweezers to make sure al the sticky bobbles were out before the new lens went in. Great video Matt, thanks!

Game changer right here!!!!! Replacement of the screen was the only problem with the 8. The only doubt i have at this point if water resistance.... sorry to use you as a tester, but have you tried to use it in the water after the change?

Just did it. Leave the hairdryer laying on the table and just set the gopro standing up infront of it for a minute. Lense comes off easy as butter and took 99.9% of the adhesive with it. Tweesers worked for the last .1%

No that would be impossible right, in fact you can put the entire camera in the oven a few minutes at about 350 as we know 8-10 GoPro's don't mind heat at all.

It's from a small Canadian company but they're pretty reputable. You can get some of their products on GetFPV and other sites as well. Not sure if the glass replacements are available anywhere else though! I live overseas and shipping times were pretty standard.

Really thanks to GoPro for making the absolute best action camera out there but sadly sorry for their stupidity to sometimes do things like destroying the "interchangeable" superior lens cover technology with the old rubbish stupid idea of Fixed glass (Possibly under the motto of better seal and waterproofness but in the real selfishness of a designer with more push! or more influence, definitely one with less IQ, who wanted to rule another better design engineer that has to be ignored so superego of the first one heals....... BUTTTTT: OK, this was one year back. Has there been anything more in between? Anymore to know or to do or NOT TO DO, or something to add? Is there any other better or easier way? My stupid dog knocked my gopro 8 yesterday and broke the lens. I found this video and made an order of lens kit from camera butter. I think i also need to buy that air blower.

So how did it go?

@@THENandNOW0203 It went great. But I made sure that I had the following tools: 1. Air blower ( I got the Giotto off Amazon. The bigger the better). Don't use pressurized air. 2. Heat Gun (I don't have a hair dryer blower) 3. Microfiber cloth 4. forceps (very useful for removing old adhesive and for wiping the inside lens by pinching the microfiber) 5. Reading eye glasses / magnifier 6. A piece of carton to cover the rest of the body while exposing the lens to be removed. 7. C-clamp (to clamp down the camera and carton to prevent the camera from moving and to prevent the carton from flying off when being blown by a heat gun. Use some cloth or fabric under the camera while clamping to relieve pressure points that might damage the camera) I never used any of their lens cleaning cloths because by the time they reached me, they've already dried up. Just wipe the lens with microfiber to remove oil residue and look at it against the light to make sure it's clear before installing.
