What type of Paint Thinner do you use? There are many different types with different ingredients so I'm worried I might use the wrong type and melt my screen... Some are made for cleaning brushes and some made for glass and metals, what is the exact one you use in this video? May I have a link to the product please?

with acetone it really does depends on the type of plastic, on some it doesnt do anything and with some it will turn into goo almost instantly.

*Results* - I've now tried paint thinner on my own display. Edit: *Important* : First use alcohol to clean the screen (where the scratches are), then use acetone - don't use paint thinner - see my reply to this comment. There were several scratches and while it did not remove all of them (one is a very deep scratch), it did make most of them almost invisible. My conclusion is that paint thinner is not making any damage to the displays, but it will be able to smoothen out minor scratches completely. When you apply paint thinner over the scratches, you will immediately see they seem to be gone, then when the paint thinner disappears, you'll see that most of the scratches seem to 'return'. -But it does help; I've repeated the process several times and even on the deep scratch it did help - though it can't be gotten rid of completely using paint thinner. My display is a Samsung display and I believe you can safely try this on Samsung displays, since the protective film is likely the same on all their displays. I'll likely try acetone on the deep scratch, because I know acetone can 'melt' some types of plastic (including ABS) - this means acetone is very aggressive and it might make things much worse. If you can't get rid of the scratches, there might be a last option: Get yourself a new sheet of protective film, then remove the current protective film and replace by the new sheet - just don't throw away your display because o a few scratches that can be fixed.
@68HC060
@68HC060 Жыл бұрын
Update: Edit: *Important* : -clean the display before using acetone, because the acetone will melt the plastic slightly, that means any dirt that's in the scratches will mix with the plastic and would be 'impossible' to get out. The last scratches are now completely gone. I used acetone for those scratches I could not remove using paint thinner. Paint thinner makes a slight discolouring (barely visible), but acetone does not. -So I recommend acetone (nail-polish remover) over paint-thinner. The display I tried this on is a Samsung S22C350 - it's not a glossy display, but I'm pretty sure acetone will work on most TFT-monitors. I used a cotton swab, dipped it in acetone, gently moved it over the scratches a few times and even the real big scratch is gone now. -So my display is like new. No need to remove the protective film from the display to get it refurbished. Enjoy everyone - and have a blessed week! 😃

I just saw your comment posted 44 minutes ago, but it's gone; I think YT might have removed it. :/ -But it's good to hear that you had success with the acetone. If the scratch isn't completely gone, you could try once or twice more. What brand is your display by the way ?

-Yes, it's likely the link; no links allowed in comments, they'll always be auto-deleted. I've also experienced that the right spelling of 'YoüTübe' and '5earch' (5=S) will immediately be auto-deleted. For some reason, I've seen others being able to post those words without problems.

@@68HC060 I cleaned the screen and set it to full white. I tried acetone (100% pure) instead of paint thinner. It worked fairly well for the light scratches, but the ones that you can easily catch your fingernails in just made them worse if anything. They seem deeper set and wider now. One of them has a worsened rainbow effect. The display is an Asus XG258Q Matte. I should have tried pain thinner first. Even on the light ones it doesn't really get rid of them, just reduced the appearance when the screen is on. I assume if the scratch is deeper than the matte coating then you're just going to make things worse. Well, with acetone. I cannot comment on paint thinner. That's just my experience.

@@68HC060 Finally. So yeah, I'd only really recommend trying a few wipes with a cotton bud, if it doesn't improve just stop completely. I made two deep scratches more distracting, from going over them too many times. One now has a shadow-type effect (it seems to have widened and deepened the scratch) and the other a rainbow. Both are worse off than they were originally..

Note: When I wipe my displays clean, I always use toilet paper and boiling hot water. No need to use expensive chemicals that color the display yellow and blue. 😉 Edit: Boiling hot water will not damage your display, just make sure you don't burn your fingers. 😉 -Also ... boiling hot water will not remove scratches, it's only for cleaning (getting rid of dust and stains). Edit: I do recommend using alcohol for cleaning the display before trying to remove scratches, though - but for "daily" cleaning (read: "yearly"), boiling hot water has always been enough.

Please try on another "scrap" monitor first, if you find a working method, then you can use it on the expensive display. A friend gave me a used TFT monitor with scratches in it. This display is very good. I'm going to find a scratched monitor on the recycle-station and will try on that monitor first, then the display I want to keep. I can always throw away the one I first tried with. Remember: Most monitors have a plastic surface (eg. a film), so acetone and thinner will slightly melt the plastic; you'll need to be quick and only use light pressure.
@68HC060
@68HC060 Жыл бұрын
One more important thing: Before you use paint thinner to remove the scratches, make sure to clean any dirt out from the scratches. For instance, let's say you have a deep scratch with some hard-to-remove dirt in it; if your paint thinner does not get all the dirt out, the scratch may "close" over the dirt, making it impossible to get this removed.
@68HC060

@@stevefox6504 ... I mentioned my results in another comment - but in short: The small scratches are now almost invisible (If I examine the monitor carefully, I can still see where they were). The big scratch does not look so bad any longer; it's still "quite" visible,but still better than before.
