Just came back here to give a quick testimony-I followed your examples listed (especially the tip of giving the interviewer an article or resource they may find interesting) and they got back to me with a job offer; the main interviewer even quoted that they really appreciated one of the articles that I sent to her. Thanks for your help! ♥

After my interview, I sent a "thank you" email following your example at 4:53, including 2 interesting articles and my ideas offering business solutions. The company reached out the next day for follow up call and I was given a job offer! The main interviewer noted that they appreciated my article links and insight and it helped me stand out over another candidate. Your advice in this video was very helpful in securing the offer. Thanks!

The employer may also be wasting your time for their own selfish purposes, such as being able to demonstrate a diverse applicant pool. I've had internal recruiters reach out to me on Monday and on Wednesday state that an offer had just been extended to someone else. I've also gone through a full-day panel interview process, ghosted for 6 weeks and then learned that the duties were given to those of an internal candidate who had interviewed me.

I have been going through an interview process for over 2 months... Seven interviews. First interview was with the sales director and the six subsequent interviews were with the six different Senior managers With vacancies on their teams. I'm going to message the recruiter today about when to expect a decision. The holidays had gotten in the way and I know that prolonged the process. But it is going on week 9 of the interview process. At this point, I'm wondering if I should reach back out to the sales director... The original person I interviewed with. Thanks for the video.

Hey big fan of the videos! Lots of great recommendations! I have to say i completely disagree with your point about not reconsidering the candidate which followed back up (six times). To disregard someone so passionate about your company would be a major mistake. Likely that candidate is interviewing with other companies and is not only focussing all his time on yours. However, he clearly favors your company over the others. While everyone says they're specifically interested in a company, while interviewing, this candidate was probably being genuine about it. Not easy to find. A genuine interest in the work a company does is going to allow for the best quality of work possible. You don't have to extend extra effort to motivate that employee.

@elizabethriley6392

True, but she eventually was able to get a job at that company because she left such a great impression - a big contrast to the rejected candidate who kept spamming with emails begging for another chance. Sounds like this could be a good move when talking with a company that you would still be open to working at in the future even if you don’t get a job there right now.

There’s really no right time frame for an employee to get back to you with a job offer. In my experience, if you don’t hear within a few days to a week, start applying elsewhere. There’s always a company that is willing to hire you without having to wait and jump through hoops.

it does not always mean that. Sometimes the hiring process take up to a month, then you will be surprised with a job offer or a final interview. But that does not mean to stop applying else where, we need to apply everywhere until we land a job, regardless of any other job application.
@genew5758

Good companies will always follow up with you shortly after the interview if they're serious about extending an offer to you. Do you really want to work for a company that takes a month to get in contact with you ? I sure wouldn't.

@@genew5758 i agree with you, but if you do not have any choice and you were offered a good offer, i am sure you will take it. What I mean, you applied for multiple job interviews, and you should get in touch with them ad long as they did not reject you. Banks and big investment firms takes month sometimes which is really frustrated, they need to find the best if the best candidate with lowest wage. Really no comment and nothing we can do. I have been applying for many jobs and still waiting for many of them, even i still work in a company that I do not like.

If a company chose to take a month to fill a position, the person hired would have at least a month of work to catch up on or more. It would be a very hard job with a huge work load. I generally extend job offers after the first interview. I may tell the applicant I have other interviews to conduct before a decision is made, but ultimately I want to fill this position ASAP. I know every job is different. I interviewed at one place three times and had three interviews. I never got the job. What a waste of time, money and resources. Employers, please don’t do this to people.

I’m 52 and I’ve never been offered a job that I sent a follow up email to. I’m sure it works for some people, but I feel like it’s bad luck for me. I also feel like the interviewers are never really basing their decision on how you interviewed. They just bring you in to make sure you don’t look homeless, and that you can present yourself well. Most people can do that with ease. The questions are just a time wasting formality. At the end of the day, they don’t want anybody too skilled or too ambitious because those people are competition for the hiring manager, and sadly companies have huge egos!

I only follow up if the company offers a decent pay. If I was applying at a fast food then I won't even bother putting time and energy. I would just keep on applying elsewhere. They must have lost their minds if they expect me to dedicate my time and energy to show my interest in working for them if they are going to pay $7.25/hr. The only companies I bothered following up was Ross and Dillard's cause they pay decent. The job offer for Ross was passed over to someone else but I got Dillard's. These are the people I would gladly follow up on.

If you haven't heard back from them by the time they said, it's because they offered it to someone else. The day after they were supposed to get back to you, send a polite follow-up email letting them know you're interested, because there is still the chance whoever they offered it to will refuse and that will increase your chances of them liking you as a second option. But do not sit around waiting to hear back from them. Keep looking for something else, and worry about them if/when they get back to you.

There are 2 slight misconceptions here: 1) Persistence gets jobs - this may be true for a tiny minority of candidates, but not for the majority, as although the recruiter may choose to hire a person who was persistent, most candidates (no matter how persistent) will not get the position, so it isn't persistence that gets them the role. 2) Being persistent means you'll automatically stay with a company long-term - this also isn't necessarily true as job seekers are often looking for what they need right now, and in a year or 2 years' time they might be looking for something new. It's not their persistence that means they'll stay long-term but their commitment to the role when they actually get there, as well as the support companies will give them in their role. If it was persistence that got people jobs, I'd have loads of them right now.

Follow up question to my follow up question! Now you reached out to HR or the Hiring Manager after the deadline they gave you asking where they're at in the interview process and you still don't hear back. To me this mean they're no longer considering you, so do you send one final email per my question below? And the 3 to 5 days rule still applies? Thank you Madeline!

If you follow up and don't hear back I'd recommend following up 2 more times (I have a rule: 3 times, and then let it go). I would make every email assume that they are incredibly busy, not that you have been rejected. So in this case (where you never hear back) I wouldn't do the farewell email.

I wanted to ask on whether I should start a new email chain with the follow up letter, or continue from the initial ''hi we would like to interview you'' conversation, or from my 'thank you' letter? But haven't replied back yet, it's been 4 days now after the 2nd follow up. I’m not sure how true this is or perhaps there’s a difference between someone applying to a director or manager role at google vs a counter worker at Macy’s...I’ve found that if you were to get the job at a company I’m Silicon Valley, law firm, etc , you will get it...they will make you feel like they really want you. If there is ghosting or silence then it’s unlikely you will get the job. Same as dating right? If a man or woman really wants to spend time they will...

I interview for an engineering internship on December 17th. I followed up with an email and a handwritten letter. I was told I should expect a formal offer by January 11th. On January 21st, they told me they'd "let me know when they have an update on the position as soon as they can." It is February 4th and I have received nothing! Should I follow up even though it is for a summer internship? Thank you Madeline!

Hi Morgan, YES keep following up - you're getting responses that are good, and most importantly, not "no." They like you! I know it sounds crazy, but we ended up giving an internship to a student who followed up 12 times. We responded to him a lot like this, with timeline adjustments and not ready to commit, and he stayed persistent. Also especially since this is for the summer...if you're in the US that means summer is still a while away so they probably do not have urgency for this. But no matter which country you're in, follow up! Good job!
