How to: Free off a Gummed Up Model Engine

A quick demonstration of how to free up a model engine which has become solid/gummed up with caster through inactivity and storage.

Good video Mark, and a number of years ago I purchased an ultrasonic cleaner with heater for small projects such as this. But your go slow with a heat gun seems to work just as well.

thats exactly how i free mine up.. have for decades... usually, if it's complete.. i just mount in a test stand.. hook up fuel and battery.. hit it with the heat gun, or torch till she spins.. then hit it with a starter till she lights off.. from stuck to running in a few minutes..

Ultrasonic heating cleaner with 30% Nitro mix. Since 1988 I used a pan on the stove set on warm/medium high for the 30%, but not boiling of course. Drop the engine in for a bit. Once the Heated Ultrasonic cleaners flooded the market, I quit using the pan on the stove. Make sure your outside and away from flammables. DO NOT put the lid on the cleaner when running. Filter out the old mix and re-use a couple more times. Keep a close eye.

If it’s a diesel, the PAW advice is to let it soak in diesel fuel. It works a treat

@@MarkRobinson555 yes but if you have a gummed up diesel engine you can’t take out the glow plug to release the compression.

@@davidpoll1042 I think you are getting confused, diesel engines do not have glow plugs. Not easy to remove the compression on diesel due to the contra piston, would have to free the piston first

@@MarkRobinson555 All I am saying is if you want to free a gummed up diesel engine then soaking in fuel for 24 hours loosens it up - you don’t even need heat. I realise the Irving that you have is a glow and that needs a different approach.
