All so true. I have been doing a lot of gym strength work and picked up a few mph, but the most gains have been from flexibility work as this allows more rotation in the back swing and hips that are free to rotate through. Also working on hearing that whoosh sound ahead of you so you are releasing though the ball. Not as quick as Matt, but have gone from 85mph up to 98mph and hoping to break 100 at some point soon.

I’m 44yrs old, just under 6ft and super thin, but athletic. A golfer asked me on the range today if my club head speed was 120mph. I have no idea. I have quick hands so focusing on hip turn, a flat front wrist, and my head down is crucial. On the course hitting 285+ yards occasionally and not fully activating my body properly. My goal is 300yrds and Eagle putts.

Ladies and Gents. Do not forget sufficient rest. Regardless what workouts yoga and speed training you do always get rest. I work and sit for a long periods but I do ensure I get up and stretch and do some basic calisthenics during the work day. Oh yeah. If you speed train properly you can build a speed reserve. This is useful cause it will build up the base club head speed for all clubs.

Getting strong at the gym will help your speed ONLY IF you have flexibility. Being flexible is the single handed most important thing in golf. If you cannot get in certain positions it’s Very HARD to swing properly and fast I stretched for one month 3-5x a week. Speed went from 106 to 120. It was much easier for me to feel the right positions and get into them. After that you need to focus on swing direction and face control

Matt why don’t you do a workout video with your trainer so that we can see what we need to be working on in the gym to increase speed. I’ve been going to a place called StretchLab to increase flexibility and it too has helped greatly with eliminating pain and increasing swing speed. I’ve done weight training work in the gym, on my own, that hasn’t helped much. Obviously, I’m working on the wrong things. Some guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I used to be a golf coach and can tell you that flexibility is more important (or at least as important) than going to the gym. I have seen 14 year old girls who don't weigh 100 pounds hitting 240 yard drives. Working on the wrong things in the gym will do more harm than good because they could mess up flexibility. If you want to increase swing speed by going to the gym, I would recommend getting a personal trainer or at least find a reputable trainer online who specializes in the golf swing. I am living proof that just going a doing a bunch of typical gym exercises like bench presses and curls will slow down your swing.

if you go to the gym and do bench press and curls and thats what you got from the video, then you are low IQ and deserve to hit the ball worse

Do you do any plyonetrics in the gym? Are you doing any squatting and lunging? Any jumps? Are you stretching after? Why flip the club over to hear the swoosh after impact? Because then the club becomes a real time implement rather than a lagging implement - but in that case now you're training yourself to swing improperly. The golf club, held by the handle, will not react in real time to your instructions and control. It will always react later than you intend so you have to learn to compensate for that lag. So, turning the club over and swinging it is a horrible idea and does not represent a real swing in any way. If you're looking for a big slice, go for it.
