Was it hard to paint over this beautiful chest of drawers? It has beautiful details. It would've been hard for me but, I always like how it turns out.
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 6 жыл бұрын
No, but I paint hundreds of pieces a year so I may be desensitized. Every now and then Zeb will convince me to leave some wood accents. Usually on the top of pieces.

I love the finish. Questions: why don't the drawers stick when painting over them and does the milk paint continue to chip or does it stop the chip process once sealed in wax? Thank you so much,
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes they stick a little and I have a designated butter knife I use to run around the edge of the drawers. It will stop chipping but what chips, chips. It’s hard to predict or control.

Love these colors!! Q: Is DIY paint and Chalk paint the same?
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 6 жыл бұрын
They are different. DIY paint is clay based, making it thicker and it’s more pigmented which is why it blends so well.

Hi, Jami, I love to pick your brain!! I just purchased a beautiful table today that has a light shine and some light stenciling on it. Rather than go back to the more than 30 of ur videos, pls tell me can I go right over this shine and light stenciling with DIY white. Will it give me full coverage and does the dark oil wax (black) from sweet pickins work well over DIY paint. Do I need to put 2 coats of DIY paint?
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 5 жыл бұрын
It will go over the shine but you’ll probably need to do 2-3 coats for full coverage if it’s really shiny. I recommend a light buff with some 220 sand paper. The oil wax works great over DIY paint but it works best on sweet Pickens milk paint.

How do you choose when to use primer on a piece, and when you don't? I watched a dresser redo right before this video (it was a gorgeous navy blue one) and you primed that one, but not this. Hope to hear back from you. Thanks!
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 6 жыл бұрын
I use high bond primer on a lot of laminate pieces or pieces that have really slick or shiny to help the paint adhere. I also use it on pieces if I want a two tone with the white coming through when I distress. Primer is a lot cheaper than paint and I still get the two tone look. Hope that helps!

Sorry missed a word, you didn't "SEAL" before the milk paint, you went straight from chalk to milk?

Yes, I wanted them to blend a little instead of being two toned so I didn’t seal between paint colors.

I'm not really loving all that bleed through. If you kinda know it's going to bleed and you don't want it on your piece, couldn't you just put a primer or shellac on first, so there won't be any bleed through? I have a dresser that "looks" like it's cherry wood or mahogany. I have a feeling it will bleed through a lot. What would you suggest before painting to keep it from bleeding through. Thanks
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 6 жыл бұрын
Sure can. I haven’t had much luck using primers as a stain blocker. If I want to eliminate bleed through I prefer Zinser Shellac. I have a video on how I use it. 👍 kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6rPhqWlaNaYfNE

can you seal the chalk paint with a polycrylic and the put milk paint over the top or will the milk paint not stick at all to the sealer?

I’ve painted it. You’ll want to give it a decent scuffing with sand paper and I use Fairy Chalk Mother High Bond Primer in pieces like this to get maximum paint adherence.

What is the difference between polyurethane and polycrylic?
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 6 жыл бұрын
Polyurethane is an oil based sealer. It’s very durable and excels in outdoor conditions. It can yellow or give off an amber color over whites. Polyacrylic is a water based sealer. Also very durable but better for indoor use. It doesn’t yellow. (If you get yellowing using polyacrylic it is what’s known as bleed through. Or a stain or oils from the wood coming through the paint)

I’m loving this finish! How many different paints would you use as a minimum to create this finish? I would love to see some boy furniture refinished. I find it hard to find refinished pieces that would work for boys. As a mother to two boys, and one girl I find it’s so easy to decorate my daughters room but difficult to find pieces for my boys (outside of natural wood finishes).
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 6 жыл бұрын
I used 5 different colors in total. 4 DIY colors for the initial blending and the 5th was Sweet pickins milk paint to get the chipping. As to boys furniture, I have 3 boys and they don’t seem to care if I paint it or not! 😂 I paint their furniture solid colors, black, gray, red and navy.

Hypothetical...Can that be stripped off later in case a family member wants to return an antique to an "original" stain?
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 6 жыл бұрын
+Vicki Ellison yes I mean you would need to restain and seal it. And this piece had damage in the top and the drawers so you would need to replace the veneer. But chalk and milk paints are easier to strip than latex.
