Just a quick note for those of you who are recognized citizens of Italy living abroad... If you come to Italy and go to “your” comune where you’re registered in the AIRE you can go get a Carta d’Identita with your non-italian address written on the card just as if you were to get one if you were living here but minus the residency check.

Now post pandemic, ID's are issued/renewed at many comune by appointment only. Best to check with the comune. The new electronic ID (CIE) is €22.20, at least the comune I live in (province of Varese). There are now apps you can do the photo with your smartphone and have the digital photo and also the physical photo.

Confirmed: I was not able to get it via the NY consulate. I got it via my great-grandfather's town where they have my birthday certificate on record. They were supposed to offer the electronic one but I got the feeling that for them it would have been a hassle so I said "Vabuò I'll take the paper one!" Oh yes, check to see if you're legit in your domicile.

The law in Italy is that you must have some sort of valid ID with you at all times, a passport is that so you don't need an ID card (though that might be more practical to carry around)

Is it possible to do this using an Airbnb, renting two months just in case? I know there is no contract you can show, but maybe there is some way to have a contract with the host. IDK, have you heard anyone done this?

From what I’ve heard the majority of Airbnb owners are uninterested in doing something like this. Many of these apartments are unregistered and for a landlord to give a hosting letter is a huge amount of responsibility. Also your identity card is supposed to be for where you are staying on a long term basis. If you’re an Italian citizen living abroad registered in the AIRE then you can go to the comune and let them know you’re registered in the AIRE and then be issued an ID almost immediately.

If you get your citizeship jure sanguinis from any italian consulate thus registered to AIRE. Can you apply for an italian ID card while being on vacation in Italy? Does it have to be at your comune of registration necessarily? Does it compromise your inscription to AIRE?

as far as i understand you can only do this in the comune where you are registered in the AIRE and from what I've heard you can you just need to let them know you're living abroad.

Yes, if you are an Italian citizen- although Ireland is not in Schengen it is in the EU, but using the paper one is likely to cause a hiccup at the border, because they might take an interest in it because the paper card is not very secure

Rafael, can you do a video further explaining the possible routes through all this paperwork? Specifically, those of us going through JS, whether via US Consulate or in Italy, how do we arrive at the point where employment in Italy is possible legally. For example, if I receive an email from the Consulate saying my citizenship had been recognized, can I then move and work (after getting a codice fiscale)? Or what further would be needed? Italian passport? Carta d'identita? Letter of Citizenship from the Comune? Obviously an email from the Consulate verifying recognition looks like it wouldn't work. But obviously it is a building block. Anyway, great videos... Just subscribed today!

We will be staying in an AirB&B (or similiar) for a month b4 we decide exactly where we want to live. It will probably not be in the comune where we will be living. So then I need to wait until we have a permanent address before retistering our domicile, right?

In my opinion it would be best if you can be in your final place of residence, if you try to regestier while being hosted and then go to another apartment things could be more complex than needed, especially if you're going to be someplace for such a short period of time.

Hi Something about that sounds strange to me. Where did you get this paper? You should have immediately been given the codice fiscale on the spot wherever you were. It should have been on the paper you were given, the code itself is immediately available but the actual card itself can take a week or two to get to you in Italy, more if abroad. Are there any strange codes on the paper? The codice fiscale is made up of letters and numbers that correspond with your name birthdate and birthplace. I really don’t have a definitive answer on the situation however my guess is that it could be . But also, are you in Italy or outside of the country?

I also never received my Codice fiscale card. I applied at the Miami consulate and gave them the self addressed stamped envelope. Miami said they sent it. But we were just getting ready to leave the states and didn't want to chance not getting it again. All I has was the letter I received in the mail with my number on it. It's never been a problem here in Italy. They only need my number. They type it in the computer and verify that it is me.

@@RafaelDiFuria I know it's late, but for what it is worth: I was recognized jure sanguinis by the Italian Consulate New York City in 2008. I applied for my codice fiscale shortly after and received the plastic card in the mail a few weeks later. My wife (also recognized, by virtue of our marriage in 1982) applied for her codice fiscale several months later and by that time they were no longer issuing cards but simply sending an email (or, was it a letter?) with the newly assigned code. I was told this change came about simultaneously with the introduction of the new plastic Tessera Sanataria card which, because it includes the codice fiscale, makes the separate plastic codice fiscale card redundant. PS: Love your videos!

I would assume you would need to go to the authority that issued the document(s) to begin with. At the very least it would be a good place to start.

To my knowledge they only offer them through walk-in services only. However the exact times will change from comune to comune and you’ll need to look on the website or they should also have them posted on the enteance(s) to the building

I'm unable to say for sure as I'm not a legal expert, I'd reccomend contacting the comune, however by law a person is required to re-register when they have a change of address.

In theory yes... the new electronic ones are supposed to be perfectly fine however some border agents in the EU don't particularly like the Italian paper ID cards.

I always travel with my id card, last summer for example I went in Paris, Netherlands, Germany and Czech Republic only with my id (I didn't even had the passport, it was expired). It's called area Schengen, we can also use our smartphones like as in Italy without paying more. This is one of the few good thing of the EU

If you're not an Italian citizen you can't use your ID card to travel outside Italy - in that case it should say 'non valido per l'espatrio' (on the electronic ones anyway - they don't issue paper ones anymore)

Hi thank you for stopping by. No, the Carta d’Identita doesn’t automatically do anything like that. The Italian Identification Document includes a section which states the nationality of the person the card was issued to. So using the example you have given, a person who is a citizen of Morocco or Tunisia would have either Morocco or Tunisia written on their italian Italian ID. But before a foreign national can get the Italian ID card they must have the permission and legal right to stay in Italy to be able to acquire the Italian ID (just like an Italian would have to in either of the countries you mentioned) Hope you have a great weekend :)
