Yes orchid lovers! They have a bad rep but they like pretty much the same conditions as us and reward you with big long lasting blooms and AMAZING fragrance! So don't be afraid!
The orchids in this video are:
Miltoniopsis Kelly 'Spangled Banner'

I was given a beautiful miltoniopsis orchid by an orchid growing friend who was moving last spring. It was blooming at the time, and held into its flowers for ages. I’m in a very similar climate to yours (San Francisco Bay Area), and am hoping for blooms again this year. Thank you so much for your delightful videos and insights.

Lucky uve made this video, i bought miltoniopsis and i nearly killed them lol now they are rootless but i see some bumps forming at the bottom of the pseudobulbs hoping it’s growing new roots. There still hope

Oh No! Keep them moist (but not wet!) and humid-ish while they re-establish roots. They don't like to dry out. But mine came back from the dead - yours will too!!!

Have a couple of milts, one spike didn’t make it, the weird way they emerge bent from within a leaf doesn’t help. Although I do have soil gnats that I’m doing my best to keep under control & eliminate which I think may have caused the loss of a spike by attacking it in its bent state whilst emerging.

I've had a few issues like that too. Important to keep them well fed with their flowering. The soil gnats shouldn't really affect the flower spikes? You can treat those by watering with a diluted solution of hydrogen peroxide - 1 part to 5 ish - two successive waterings - you can't damage the plant with hydrogen peroxide so don't worry too much about the dilution. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the video! Very helpful - and you're right I do need a spicy marigold in my life! haha! I'm in Chicago (YIKES!) and happened to see a Miltoniopsis Morris Chestnut 'Vivian' at a local garden - it was beautiful and I quickly made the purchase. It was in bloom. I've had it home for 2 weeks and the blooming flowers are now dead. But I do have 2 steams which are close to opening and looking ok (for the moment). My question is what do I do w the flowers that have died? Do I trim the stems? How far down? Any thoughts?

Thanks for watching! Sounds like a find! Yes - once all the flowers have dried & dropped off cut the stem down as far as you can comfortably go without disturbing the pseudo bulb.

Were you providing any liquid nutrients? It may have abandoned the extra spikes due to lack of available NPK.

Probably the Miltoniopsis in Australia have silly names ☺but at least they have. Here in France all the orchids have the same name. Mixted Orchid......

Growing miltoniopsis and Miltonia in Texas, bought them in bloom, and now the 3 new growths on each plant is maturing- but I don’t see the pseudobulbs yet- once those emerge, is that when the flower spikes will set?!
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Miltonia Texas! Yes....and no! Those new growths start leafy and strappy and over a few months will thicken out to form the pseuodobulb with two leaves either side of it. Once it has matured, usually a whole growing cycle ie one year, it's ready to bloom. If it is going to bloom the the spike appears on one side in the joint of one of the two leaves that appear either side of the pseuodobulb. And it can sometimes need a little help bursting out so keep an eye on the very young spike - I've had a couple get stuck and whither! But three growths is great! They are quick growers once they're happy! Good luck with yours!

I live on Oregon coast & my miltonia hasn't bloomed for quite a while. Will it help to fertilize it & how often, if so? I water it every few days, but it's not blooming. And it gets light from cloudy days mostly. The plant is small to mid size.

Miltonia does need more humidity and warmth than Miltoniopsis. I sit my Miltonia in a dish of pebbles with some moisture to increase the humidity and mist it as often as I can remember! I fertilise mine in the growing season early spring to early autumn. And mine has two flower spikes which are about to open so I'll be making a care video soon! Good luck with yours!

Hello, What water type you use for Miltoniopsis's? regular town water or rain water or distilled demineralized water for them?

Thanks for watching - the best place to buy them is on line. Most of the sellers have ebay stores so if you enter "Miltoniopsis" into the Ebay search you'll se them all. Otherwise: redfoxorchids.com.au/ Always has a selection and they are great plants. Good luck!

what is the best window to keep them in
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Depends where you are and the relative brightness of your house. In the southern hemisphere mine winter in a northern aspect with bright indirect light, in the northern hemisphere try a south window. Just make sure the light is filtered - they can take a bit of very early morning direct light. The leaves will develop black 'burn' marks if there's too much strong/direct light, and conversely they will be dark green and lush with not enough light and won't flower!
