1. Do not focus too much on breath retention times, it's not really important in the longterm. 2. ALWAYS do breathing while sitting or lying on the ground. 3. 100% air go in, 75% of air go out. It's normal to inhale more air than exhale. *4. DO NOT force it. It is not workout, forceful muscle chest expanding do not needed.* 5. Try returning to online course and doing it again from very beginning. 6. Don't hold the final inbreath for too long. It's not about that. 7. Do not treat it like calisthenics routine. Main work is in focus and concentration on the breath, like meditation, not power breathing and lung exercise. 8. Vary it, do it in various times, with various music OR in complete silence. *9. Once you get used to it, try to listen to your feelings, and do number of breaths you feel saturated best. It may be more or less, no matter. Figure out what works best for yourself.*

I've been doing the WH method for about 2 months, and I can now hold my breath for 3:30 min. Is it unusual at my age (77)?
@richrealign4 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's a long time! I've rarely hit that, and what I've found is that we all have a different natural lung capacity, and for many reasons. A small man I know hit at least that first time he tried it, I was really surprised. What's worked best for me over the years is not focusing on the retention times too much, but more on how you feel when holding that breath - hopefully you can let go and find some nice peace and inner stillness, that (for me) is what it's there for. Hope that helps!

Hey dude, I've been doing Wim Hof breathing every morning for a little over a month. Over this time I've been feeling I was doing it wrong, I'd been thinking of it in terms of a workout for the lungs. When Wim says to think in intensity I imagined that meant I had to breathe in as much air as I could as powerfully as I could. At the end of the sessions I'd feel great, but I'd have a sort of headrush, a similar kind of thing would happen if I meditated and didn't concentrate too well. And well I just couldn't really figure out where my issue was. Tried a session considering all of this and found it to be so much more relaxing, I feel like I've gained what I want to have gained from this breathing from that session, thanks. The playlist is great by the way, trying to bring myself to meditate without it is gonna be hard.

Very gentle and caring soul. Easy to listen to, thanks for the clarification on the exhale. My question is how wedded is the breathing to the ice shower/bath? Must the breathing always precede the shower? Can you do them farther a part, say hours in the same day? All the instructions I have heard from Wim say to step into the shower after the breath hold on the third round. Your notes say not to get into water afterward.
@richrealign5 жыл бұрын
Hey there. As modalities they are indeed totally separate, but breathing before cold exposure makes cold exposure a little easier, people find. The instructions Wim is talking about are from a specific step in the cold exposure journey, and isn't referring to doing the actual breathing technique beforehand, as far as I'm aware. My tips are from a general safety point of view, in line with the method's guidelines, to avoid people holding their breath underwater, not under the shower. I hope that helps!

@@DanielAtorranteFilms Hi, Wim will say 'any hole', but my preference is in through the nose, out through the mouth. There are no rules, basically - whatever works best for you is the right way to do it. Sure, yoga has much to say on Pranayama and I'm fully behind that as a yoga teacher myself, but in context with the WHM, anyone claiming that there is a 'correct' way is probably taking themselves a little too seriously :)

Once you figure out how many breaths work for you, I recommend timing with a stop watch how long it takes you to complete that many breaths. Then I like to use an app called insight timer and set it for that many minutes. I find counting the breaths to be mentally fatiguing and distracting. I much prefer to hit the timer and wait for the gentle bell to tell me I have completed the breathing. It has made a big difference for me.

My times were dropping when inhaling 100%. It felt way too forced and exhausting. I tried 80% and was much more relaxed about it all and my retention increased by 1 minute. So that was nice. But, I have not noticed any benefits after doing the basic method every morning for about a month. I only do 1 round, but I have tried doing 2 and it's just the same. The cold is nice afterwards, but the breathing has no effect during or after. I normally do about 38 inhales. Maybe I need to try going up to around 60 or something.
@richrealign4 жыл бұрын
Hey there, to notice the benefits of the method it's recommended to do three rounds - it's at the end of the third round that we see the major shift in hormones etc. One round won't do much unfortunately. As to how many inhales, it depends person to person. 30 is a good average, some need more, some less. Hope that helps

Thank you for your grounded video. I've been doing the wim hof breathing now for about a month and have felt many benefits and feel overall great doing it. I have added rounds as Ive felt moved to and so now I usually go to 4th and 5th round. This started out feeling really good but it seems the last week or so on these later rounds I am realizing that there is a bit of disorientation happening at the end of my retention and I can't remember the last bit of my retention, almost like a mini blackout. It's around the 2:15 to 2:30 mark. In the early rounds I am very present and take my rescue breath at the obvious point, but as I go deeper and longer in later rounds, it feels like at a certain point I am relying on my body to let me know when it's been long enough which is sometimes after I am conscious of it, if that makes sense? It doesn't feel forced, and I always come away feeling like I have gone deep into my parasympathetic but it also feels a bit risky and disorienting and I'm not sure whether it is ultimately beneficial - like is mini fainting on the regular (if that's what is happening) a good idea? . Do you have any experience with this? Many blessings and thanks!
@richrealign4 жыл бұрын
Hey Zack, thanks for sharing your experience! You've said it's not forced so it sounds ot me like you're dropping into a very deep state of consciousness, perhaps relatable to yoga nidra / deep theta & delta states. "The body and mind got to sleep, but awareness remains aware" is what my yoga teacher would say. There is zero danger here, as long as you're in a safe environment. The body will always come to. The question I have for you is, how do you feel afterwards? Rested? Groggy? Any insights? Are you more grounded and peaceful, or agitated and unclear? That's the real mark of how any practice affects us. What do you do directly after the breathing, and how does that feel? I'd love to know more.
@zackmoon94 жыл бұрын
@@richrealign Thank you so much for your reply! I find that very interesting about what you said of dipping into a deep level of consciousness and it makes sense, especially as our oxygen levels get lower during retention it is easier to engage this state and perhaps I have nothing to fear!. I have experienced these similar timeless deep states in meditation albeit not while holding my breath so I think that is mostly where my concerns arose from. Tbh I think that after these disorienting time losses/ "losing" consciousness/ dipping deeper whatever one might call it I certainly felt confused and a bit fearful and a bit of disconnect all the while noticing the relaxing benefits of the deep parasympathetic and the clearing as well as strengthening I feel in my cardiovascular system. The breathing has been the start to my days during all this time at home and from there have gone to either exercises or straight to the cold showers (amazing!) as I have been exploring these wim hof practices. Up until these recent concerning experiences, this has been feeling such a great way to start my day to feeling alive and connected and present which I carry through my day. I have readjusted since the last couple days and decided to not follow along with the app as I find I might be tracking my time too much this way, and just to directly be with my breath and retention without a timer so there is nothing external that may be overguiding or a possible self standard I am trying to maintain. This has felt better so far to let my own rhythm guide. What I am after mostly with my practices is greater presence and connection between my body mind and spirit which allows me to connect with all of life. I am one who is more comfortable typically to disconnect/ detach. The breathing and the cold has so far been a great direct access to this end, a healthy uncomfortability that brings great direct experience of life. Im seeing, though if im potentially overdoing it or fearful is another option, then I run the risk of detaching/ disconnecting. For myself, there might be a fine line or a sweet spot or maybe even an edge to dance with. I don't know, I'm very new to these methods so I truly appreciate your reply and for all you have shared of your thoughts and experiences and grateful for the opportunity to share mine🙏
@richrealign4 жыл бұрын
@@zackmoon9 All sounds great! The best advice I can give is to go your own way and experiment - find that connection by listening to what is happening on the inside. The method served for me as a stepping stone to deeper practices with more structure and lineage like yoga or qi gong. Your relationship to how you relate to your body and the energies that you may now have access to mean that these practices take on a new meaning and accessibilities. Enjoy Zack, and never stop exploring.

Advice 11 : (after day 4 - big expert!) run a bit uphill and out of breath. Lay down on your back and try to come back to normal. You will do exactly the method naturally. After try the same without running. * I had a clue that this is how he discovered. It is amazing how the body gets rid of the carbon piled up in your blood. I tried several times and always ended up with 30 breaths. 20 through the mouth and when I relaxed a bit, 10 through the nose. * This is WHM breathing..... He thought "well, why would I wait to get acid, let's go alkaline with it and let's see". Good idea. Otherwise you are always on the acid side, now on the alkaline. When you do it, it feels unnatural compare to to the bodies automatic recovery breath, try to copy. * Thanks for the video!

Hi love the video. Just wondering about the final exhalation before we hold our breath, would you let 100% go or just let go to 75%? Thanks
@richrealign3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and question. I try to let go of that last deep, full breath in very naturally, and stop at the end of the exhale, and rest/pause the breath. That's another way of saying 100%, but being careful not to consciously clear every last drop of breath that was there, that's too much and 'unnatural', and causes a strain. This should be a relaxed part of the technique. Hope that helps!

Thanks very much for the video. I’ve been doing WHM for a month and I hit my 2 minute retention time this morning. But I do have a tendency to try really hard to “beat my record”, which might be counterproductive to my goal. In this light I wish to ask you: What should be the main goal of breath retention? Should it be the head rush? Or anything else? And how long should we “REALLY” try to hold the breath despite the spasms/contractions? Any tips on this will be really helpful!! Thanks.
@richrealign5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jedi Black Knight. My advice is not to have a goal whatsoever, other than to observe how you feel during the day and whether this technique is adding to or detracting from your levels of energy and stability. Where did you get the idea to 'hold your breath despite spasms/contractions'? That is the last thing I would do if I were you. I put up another video about not going as deep with the method, and I recommend checking that out for more tips - I hope you find it useful!

Hi there thanks 4 this amazing information we reay needed that.... I wod like to ask you can this breathing method cure gastritis?
@richrealign4 жыл бұрын
Hey, you're welcome. Re gastritis, or anything you're suffering from, I wouldn't look to it as being a cure, rather something that could help, it's a big distinction and important too. And specifically re gastritis, I don't know! But you can ask in the Wim Hof Method Facebook group, and I'm sure you'll get a lot of answers and ideas - hope that helps!

If I may also add in my tip: At least for me, I do not include any mini pauses into the breathing. Like, how Wim Hof does it is by like: *Full inhale.* *Mini pause.* *Not so full exhale.* But for me, I feel like I get way more: *Full inhale.* *Not so full exhale.* *Inhale.* *Exhale.* What do you think?
@richrealign3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. I wasn't taught by Wim to do a mini pause - maybe that's new? I'm with you tho, how you're doing it makes more sense, to me at least.

@@richrealign At least in his YT guided breathing video he makes this very very small pause in between the inhalation and exhalation. I find that I get way mote from excluding the pause. You're welcome! ☺️

I hear you say that holding the in breath for a long time isn't necessary, but is it counterproductive? Is there any good reason not to do it?
@richrealign4 жыл бұрын
Good question. It'll add a sense of euphoria for sure, so I like to hold that in-breath for as long as I can on the last round. Apart from it being time-consuming and sometimes overstimulating (for me), I wouldn't say it's counter-productive though. Hope that helps!

Any advice for a recovery breath after completing the 15 second hold? Is it better to do this breath hold after inhaling or exhaling? Thanks
@richrealign3 жыл бұрын
The recovery breath, as I learnt is, is the 10-15 second inhale hold after the exhale hold. You're recovering from holding your breath out for a longer time than normal :)
@lifeisreal58783 жыл бұрын
Thanks for answering. My question was a bit incomplete. After doing all the rounds and 15 s last hold. I read that you can do another recovery breath. Inhale and hold for as long as possible. When I don't do this there is too much of a buzz , pulsating, energy etc. I find it helps me to calm down and recover. Any thoughts ? Is this a good practice? Best wishes.
@richrealign3 жыл бұрын
@@lifeisreal5878 Ah, got you. I tend to finish on this recovery breath by holding in as long as is comfortable, and then letting go and relaxing into whatever comes up in body and mind - great way into meditation too, I find.

Yep. It really helps. I read this last year but can't find the website. Best wishes.

Are you saying hold breath after 15 seconds again ? I do like the extra 15 secs, this is when I feel relaxed as i know it's only a short hold and I've achieved the longer hold beforehand. I find this is where the training part of your lungs seems to kick in.

Thanks for this video. I got so frustrated lately, cause I couldn't get that nice tingeling feeling anymore... The one that got me hooked (besides the increased energy ;-) )... Also my retention times got more short, without any reason.. I am trying to find the right amout of outlet and number of intakes. thanks for your advice!

I will add 2 tips: 1) this one was night and day difference for me: breathe in from your diaphragm or your belly, NOT your chest. It’s very easy to do shallow breathing through the chest without really knowing it, 2) when holding your breath, do not move! If you move, you expend oxygen and wont be able to hold it as long. I also like to just do deep breaths every once in a while during the day which helps clear the mind a bit.
@richrealign4 жыл бұрын
great additions! i agree with the belly breathing focus, tho if we don't focus on where we breathe at all and instead let the body do that, it tends to go there i find. chest breathing is not the way to go, you're right. and yes to keeping still! that's the best bit for me, a deep stillness so we can really drop down. thanks for your comment.

Re-Align yes 100%. I surprised myself in that I was mainly doing shallow breathing in the chest. Deeper breaths made a big difference for me

On the 10-15 second hold, I have pulled up the perineum. I like this but have received some negative comment on it when suggested.

Thank you very much for your input. is it better to fill in your tummy first and than your chest or should it be done just your chest (lungs) or just the stomach? would you recommend doing it morning and night? and also should the cold showers should be cold all of the time? I Have been doing it in the morning and afternoon and I feel great !!! I have so much more energy since i have been doing the Wim Hof technique. thank you very much !!!!!

I just breathe without directing and let my body do the rest. Morning before getting out of bed too. Cold showers separate subject, separate video too ;) Great you're experiencing more energy, keep enjoying.

Is it normal to have this tingling feeling in my temples and centre of my chest and upper stomach when practicing the WH breathing?
@richrealign3 жыл бұрын
Tingling can occur in many places, and yes it's normal - it's your body's sensitivity to the change in oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. It's all good :)
