Thank you for this video. It took me literally 2 minutes and now my garage door goes up (it was going up only a few inches). I knew the springs were fine, and I had called my local GD company. Was told I needed a new motor! Didn't want to spend THAT much $$, so said no thanks! Was opening manually for a while and would close fine with remote. Started reading about how to repair and came across the force button info. All I needed was a slight adjustment to my up force. BE FOREWARNED: This is one of those ROB YOU BLIND kind of garage door company repairs!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes they are!! Luckily you had the patience to research options and weren't in a rush to get it fixed, most people fall for this because they want their garage working NOW and they don't utilize the resources like youtube to see if the problem really is what the repair company says it is. You were smart and dodged a bullet on that one, but don't stop at that, you should find out why they either sent a crook to your house or someone with zero experience because your neighbor might be the next victim. I use KZbin for stuff like this everyday and have benefited immensely for it, so if I can pay it forward with video's on my specialty then all the better. Glad it worked out for you!!

Well as vague as that question is...it's do-able. Re-skinning is fairly easy as long as you don't let the section get out of square when removing the old skin and try to stick with a similar thickness so as not to add more weight.

Nice vid! On the Liftmaster which is electronically controlled how do you mechanically adjust travel limit? I'm asking because I program DOWN limit making bottom seal nice and tight. Once programing is done, the door loses about 1/8" leaving a gap at the bottom so the door loses the travel limit once programming is done. Any help is appreciated.

Any suggestions on replacing the outside wood skin on a 16x2 panel? The bottom panel of my garage door is all rotted away near the bottom. Cost to replace the entire panel is out of my budget...I'd rather DIY the repair.

my liftmaster controls a one piece 2 car garage door. about 10 years old. the other day it started going down, made contact with the driveway, and then went all the way back up. i've been through different settings on the two blue screws on the back and it still does it. all the way down, then reverses to all the way up. i bet the neighbors think i'm an idiot. the sensor lights are both on, there are no obstructions, i haven't had a power outage or made other adjustments to the door. it still goes both up and down, the chain is not too slack or too tight, and i only use it a handful of times a day if that. the only thing i CAN get it to do is set it to hardly travel the rail downward before going back up completely. the rod that the race travels on will slightly buckle and it will stop for an instant before going back up again.

You should try to back off the down limit until the door stops short of closing then fine tune the down limit so the rail doesn't buckle then bump up the force. try that and let me know.

i've tried every combination in the two dials. with the down all the way down, the door will only track down about two feet and then come back up again. even with the down turned slightly up from zero the door continues to close and then open all the way up again. is it the safety feature malfunctioning? can maybe some excessive vibration in the rails for the door be tripping the sensors to re-open the door?

If it's related to the sensors then the lightbulb would blink 10 times after it came back up. But don't mistake the force control dials for the limit adjustment dials. Force control dials (Usually blue) have numbers going around them 1-9, most machines on a 1pc door should be set at the high side of 7. The limit or "travel" adjustments are the two recessed screws (usually on the side of the machine...not the back and the screws are white) with just an arrow going around them. If you want more in depth instruction on how to set the limits and force controls call me while your up the ladder and I can walk you thru setting it right, I'm in the shop from 7am pacific to 8 am mon thru friday, anytime after that Paul will answer the phone, he is experienced in this as well. 858-576-7223

my garage door opens fine, but it hits the motor when it opens...it normally stops around 6 to 8 inches from the motor, but now collides into it.

I have that Genie one. When it gets down to bottom it automatically goes up again. Could increasing the force down stop this?

Possibly but you need to watch the rail when it gets all the way down and see if it bows up... if it does then it's traveling too far down and I would lean more towards adjusting the down limit back a bit. if it just softly touches down and reverses the check to make sure it's not your safety beams causing it to go back up by watching the camera with the red LED light if the door touches the ground or gets close and that red LED flashes and the opener goes back up then adjust the beams to point slightly more toward the street. If you determine that it's neither of the first two i mentioned then bump up the force control. I you just go right to the force control and it's closing too far it will strip out your trolley.

sounds like the coupler between the motorhead and the rail has stripped, separate the two and you should see a small coupler in there. It has oval ends and over time they get rounded and the screw doesn't spin anymore.

I want to possibly add some insulation type material onto my garage door. This would add more weight to the door. Should I make adjustments before doing this, or afterwards? This is an aluminum 2 car garage door. I can't recall what type of opener I have at the moment. The dials are on the back. Thanks.

I really don't think the insulation you add will change the weight of the door all that much. The reason I say this is because when I order a door insulated from the MFG they still give me the same springs it would have come with, had it not been insulated. So add your insulation and then see how it feels by working the door by hand, if it feels ok then see what the machine thinks of the added weight, if you have to go higher on the force control then do it in small increments until it works like it should. Now if you work it by hand and its really heavy then you might need to add some winds to your springs, but I doubt that will be the case.

Awesome Video, I have a Genie series II garage door wall control button and Light button doesn't turn the light on. However, when the garage door opens or closes. The light comes on automatically. So, I figured maybe the light switch control button has bad contacts. So i purchases a new one and the problem still exists. I just don't know where to look for. Can you please advise. thanks

Light Switch is probably not for the genie opener but for the light that is on the ceiling.

I did a little testing on a machine here in the shop and it worked just fine, if your circ brd was bad I think there would be more going on than just the light on the wall console not working... I would lean towards a bad wall console, check the solder joints on the light switch under a magnifying glass, I'll bet there is a cold solder joint on the wall console.

The top of my door started hitting the chain support bar yesterday. Then the door stops opening. The door opener is a Stanley Quiet Glide. Can't find anything that would cause this. I've inspected everything and nothing is loose, or broken. This unit has been operating fine for a long time. If you pull the top of the door down slightly, and push the wall switch, it then opens. Any suggestions?

I have an old Genie that has one plastic screw that goes all the way through the machine. If i tighten it, does that increase the downward force or the upward force? I want to know what I should do with it.

Ok. so my problem is that my genie will open fine but not close unless I press and hold the button in the garage. My car remote gives the ability to open without issue but cannot close the door. Sensors look fine as I have cleaned them up. I was debating on getting a new garage door opener but its hard to justify that when it has the ability to open and close, just can't close with the garage remote.

My door starts to close then stops. Sometimes it starts to go back up after stopping, sometimes not. If I hit the button again, it comes down a few more feet and stops again. Sometimes, when it gets all the way, it starts to go back up. Any Ideas whats wrong and how can I fix it. Also, in the closed position, one side of the chain is slack, the other side tight. I have never heard of a Raynor Pilot, that's not a common machine around socal and you have so much going on It's hard to say where to start but I would start with the force controls turn em up and then move on to eye-beams (if you have them) and down limit adjustments. (back off the down limit)

Hugo Arreguin you would need to turn the “down limit” dial... not the force control because if you back off on the power the opener will reverse and open back up, you want the door to stop when it touches the floor so adjust you down limit or “down travel” so that it doesn’t go so far down.
