@@DonSuratos Oh really? Fantastic. I'm a beginner and I bought the game color set so I've been trying to find channels that use them so I could learn a bit more so that's good to know! You've got yourself a sub!

Great video on getting a high level of quality using transparent vallejo colors and how to simulate (more or less) that "Contrast Paint" approach, and beyond. You really need to design a cool Golden Lemon t-shirt and sell merch. 😎 Of all your videos, the ones in this format are my fave. I can watch them repeatedly and pick up new info and tips each time. Even just how you demo laying down a particular color. More please, sir!

Thank you so much for the cc Alex. I think like this video, I should refrain from speeding up ( 2x ) the painting. Normal speed while explaining kinda helps explain the topics better ( I think ). Again, thanks Alex! ☺️🎨🎨🎨

Thanks for the tip Don, never knew about adding glaze medium to inks to use them similar to contrast paints!
@DonSuratos2 жыл бұрын
Just to soften the inks. They are sometimes too saturated and very harsh without mediums. ☺️🎨🎨🎨

I've watched a few Jeff Miracola painting videos (he's a Magic the gathering artist) and the techniques are surprisingly similar. He builds up from his line art with very thin but dark applications of fluid acrylics then more opaque highlights.
@DonSuratos2 жыл бұрын
Oh maybe coz I draw too? I am pretty sure he is a far better artist than me though. 😅

These terms have changed greatly over the years. In the 80s Inks = painting with undiluted ink (blue over a white base, black instead of black paint); Wash = diluted ink wash for shading (brown ink 5:1 over flesh base); Glaze was an undiluted light color ink or diluted darker ink of a different shade than base color over a darker color base creating a 'glow' effect (think goblin green skin painted & highlighted and once dry add a coat of yellow ink - the skin now has a shinny effect). Many of these terms are taken from classical painting terms and/or were regional terms. Check out very early WD when inks first started to be used.
@DonSuratos2 жыл бұрын
Agree. Most terms used were just burrowed from Fine Arts. Glazing is particularly burrowed from the natural method of applying thinned down oil paints. As some oil paints are naturally semi transparent even if unthinned. Thus glazing for me is painting with transparent paints. Thanks for the info! ☺️🎨🎨🎨

Thank you for the content and education. May you be able to address the following confusion: What is the difference between Vallejo Products "Model Wash 76.518 (black)" and "Game Color Wash 73.201 (black)" and "Model Color Glaze 70.855 (black)"?
@DonSuratos2 жыл бұрын
The Model Wash, fels like watered down paint, the Game wash feels like thinned paint with water and glaze medium, the Glaze is a semi transparent paint with typical Model Color consistency. Hope this answer helps. ☺️
@southpaw54832 жыл бұрын
@@DonSuratos Thank you Don; I am thinking the Model Wash is more like a "filter" while the Game Color Wash is more like a Citadel/ArmyPainter wash. Was looking for thoughts from highly experienced folks like yourself. I am enjoying your book I recently purchased.

I love the intro.... contrast paints are a good tool to add to your paint job but not to use as only paint to paint...

Thank you! Learning that people like good intros. Agree, contrast are good, but I can't. 😅

They work quite well as airbrush glazes. Not bad for blocking things out in early stages either, as long as they aren't large flat panels.

Can you use inks with the airbrush?

Yes Roberto. No thinning and lower the pressure to around 15 psi. ☺️

Looks great! But if I'm honest I didn't really understand what the reasoning is behind when to use inks with glaze medium and when to use paints with glaze medium.
@DonSuratos2 жыл бұрын
The mediums add more transparency and softens the inks. ☺️
@Warrior_warlock2 жыл бұрын
@@DonSuratos thank you :) I'm not trying to be obtuse (maybe Im just slow :P ) but when would you choose which of the two options to use on a miniature? There seem to be so many techniques out there that I find it hard to move beyond those that I'm comfortable with as I can't tell when an alternative would be the better choice. This dwarf looks amazing and I would never have thought to build the hair up using glazes, because I'd imagine paints would do. I use both inks and paints, but only ever use inks for glazing, never painting and only paints for painting, never glazing.

Be careful with the torchlight guy. He's been caught out a few times just stealing other companies works, and posting as his own. Heck, his original few logos didnt even have "torchlight" spelled correctly. By all means, if he has paid you for the exposure, then go for it. But just be wary that he has been pretty dodgey before. Dont want to see you get burned.
