I would like to see a video on how to finish off a mosaic piece. Regarding the edges of a piece. Whether it's an outdoor piece or indoor. I've never seen a video showing this; in other words, do I paint, frame or put some kind of metal edging around it?

I've seen this technique used in a window or frame -- that way, you can glue the glass to the glass and the frame is already there! :)

Good video, thanks. How long should you wait before starting to apply your grout once it is mixed? How long do your generally have to work with the grout? Can you add more water to the grout as you work if it starts to dry out? Once mixed are you forced to use all the grout at that sitting or can you moisten and cover and save for later? If so, how long will it last? You mention that it's cement based and you shouldn't dump into sinks or toilets. Is your only option to clean up the waste to put it in the trash? When using a sponge to apply & to clean up guessing your best option to minimize sink exposure is to work with a separate container of water to do your rinsing. If you do that, what's the best option for draining the container? Drain or toilet is bad but guessing it's also not great to just pour it outside. What should you do with the waste water? Can you use a filter to strain out the grout particles and dispose of the water normally? If so, any recommendations on filters? How long do you need to wait for the grout to dry? And if applying a sealer, how long should you wait before applying? Can you give a quick explanation about the differences between sanded & unwanted grouts? What types of projects should the various types be used for? Any tips on edge finishing? Thanks.

Do you grind or sand every piece of stained glass before glueing it to the substrate? If not, isn't the pieces' edges sharp and cutting when applying grout?

I rarely grind my glass edges; you can bevel. the grout if the glass thickness is slightly different, but generally speaking, the grout covers the share edges. Good question. Thanks!

Thanks so much for this clear and concise guide! I took a mosaic course a while ago and using the technique taught there (lightly wiping with a damp sponge after no setting time), I haven't been able to keep the grout even with the tesserae. I'm certain now that I'm armed with the knowledge I need to do a proper job of it.

What is the stained glass sitting on to begin with? The white stuff? And is that part of the final piece? I'm wanting to see how I can do something like this but in the end will just be the glass and the grout holding the glass together (so you can still see through the glass. Is that possible? Thanks in advance!

The white stuff is white thin-set mortar, the appropriate adhesive for marrying stained glass to a pre-cast stepping stone, which is concrete. Grout does not have any adhesive properties. If you are using transparent stained glass you definitely want to use white thin-set mortar because you see through the glass to the adhesive. Use sanded grout if your grout lines are larger. For most applications use sanded.

Thank you for this video! I'm new to mosaics. Can you use frosted glass nuggets in a piece? Do you grout the same way? Or would the grout not come off the frosted glass? I've laid down my tesserae but I'm afraid to glue them until I know about how grout will work with frosted glass. Any help is much appreciated!

I would do a test, those glass nuggets are sometimes etched glass other times painted. glue some on a scrap something, and then do a grout test. If I am concerned about protecting something like that when grouting cover with painter's tape to protect and be careful around those pieces. Wish there was an easy answer! Thanks for being a fan.

The slake time (the time that you let the grout set before you even put it on the mosaic) varies per manufacturer, but typically 10-20 minutes. Read the package. After that period be sure to stir the grout again before applying to mosaic. When you wipe off is dependent on many factors, including environmental. You want to wait until the grout begins to go back to power, this can be anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. Then wipe off. Hope this helps and good luck with your project!

We use several different brands, always sanded, polymer fortified. Mapei, Latictere and Tec are some of my favorites. Custom Home is sold by Home Depot.

Unsanded grout does not have sand as an aggregate and would only be used for very small grout lines. Sanded grout is just that, sand is the aggregate and if best for uneven grout lines, and any more than 1/4" wide. Good luck!

I really can't speak to this. I have not tried. You might want to experiment. Of course, the process shown in the video would not apply as SimpleSet is composed of much different materials and will not react the way standard grout does.

Sorry, but as an old adult male who has never cooked, ''Mix to a consistency of brownie mix'' doesn't help me :p I own it, it's my bad, but something like a consistency of a concrete paste (Not slurry) might be better? I know concrete a little better than Brownie mix :p Maybe another universal, firmer than toothpaste? I'm guessing here, not knowing Brownie consistency :)

Heed the warning about cementitious products, never clean your tools and equipment at the sink, rinse off outdoors using the hose, idiot flippers cleaned their gear in the sink after doing my kitchen (before I bought the place) , 5 years later and I'm still punching drain lines to clear spalling grout and thinset that clung to the pipe interiors, it breaks off and clogs the drains and requires mechanical smashing up- it'll end some day but who needs this chore?
