I live in Florida and we have like 4 different types of fire ants on our property. I have a fire ant guy that comes and treats my property every 4 months but not around my garden. I use containers to garden as I am older and have arthritis and some mobility issues with my ankles and knees anymore. But I find those ants hate the smell of cinnamon. So I buy large containers of cinnamon and sprinkle on top of my containers and the ants stay out of them.
@TeamBensonHomestead5 ай бұрын

Never get tired of fresh green beans, they can be cooked so many good ways. Favs are teriyaki and bacon n onion. I want to try those dragon beans. Also asparagus beans. Biggest problem I’ve had here in south Florida is the hot wind, just general high heat, and the little containers dry out fast. You have a wonderful back yard. You are such a well spoken and cute young lady, I will subscribe!

@jeannedinovo55436 ай бұрын
To work with the hot winds, and sun scald you can buy a sheer woven sun cloth that you drape and secure to posts with clamps over your rows or patch. This lets in rain and plenty of sun, but minimizes any damage. There is a darker version if you want to maintain the HEAT in your rows to extend the growing season, of lettuces or second broccoli growth, or even tomatoes. Beans will continue to flower if adequate light and warmth is provided, so more beans to eat! Keep watered and work in a small handful of fertilizer (for flowers n vegetables) around each.

I loved this video. This is the first year of my life and I'm 63, that I've had a run in with fungus knits, uggg. Thanks for your input about the cinnamon. My hubby wanted to buy chemicals to get rid of them, I'm not into that stuff. I also didn't realize you could grow so many bean plants together in such small a area. I can't wait to get started. Wish I was in your location, I'm in Kansas and it's late February, I'm so ready to get my garden going, my little green house is over flowing. Until next time, happy growing.

You can use a food container with small holes poked all over the top to get rid of fungus gnats. I use half warm water/half apple cider vinegar with a drop of dawn dish soap to break surface tension so they fall in and drown in the water/vinegar combo. They are super attracted to apple cider vinegar. I put a pinch of sugar or honey in if I really want to get them coming in quick to the trap. After they thin out, I dump it and rinse it for the inevitable surge of the next round of hatched gnats coming out of the soil. When that happens, I repeat the process. That usually gets rid of the whole batch of them and the problem is over. Cinnamon never worked for me in the house, apple cider vinegar worked far better and faster.

Beans are self-pollinating and pollination usually happens even before the blossom opens. So they are less likely to cross-pollinate even when growing close to each other. However, to be on the safe side, try to plant different varieties of beans at least 10 feet from one another if you are saving bean seeds. This is straight from Google. I believe we should be safe to save seeds from plants planted near each other. Because there is no way I could put 10ft between each variety lol. Hope that helps plus I needed to know for myself.
@TeamBensonHomestead3 жыл бұрын

Lol oh that has to be one interesting bean lol. I have had some interesting mixes over the years too. Now when I'm planning to save seeds I only plant one type. Since I have a small space I don't have to use all my seeds at once. Some years I grow for variety and some I grow to save seeds.

Yea i was right about the cinnamon. I guessed on your post before watching the video. Vermiculite works well also. I have used both and no gnats lol.

Nice!!!! I was so annoyed when I saw them lol. I'm going to pour out the rest from the bag and put a tarp on it to kill them. I really don't want gnats all over the garden

Hi, I happen to watch this video the other day about the beans. Then you talked about a solution for the fungus gnats at the end. I am so happy to get this info, they have been flying up my nose, buzzing over my food as I eat and appears to be lingering on all my many indoor plants. I purchased these plug in blue lights that trap them to no return. It works but as you say they keep populating. Oh My!!! I went to the dollar tree and loaded up on the cinnamon and covered (not a sprinkled) all the exposed soil in all of the plants lol. Thanks so much, I've shared this with some plant loving family members so they can get the same satisfaction. Thanking you in a more personal way. Thanks girl!! Be blessed

Omg gnats can be the worst and it's always right up the nose lol 😆😂. The cinnamon helps a lot. Also if you have house plants let the top layer of soil dry out a bit if you can that will help too.

Omgosh! Love your vid! New gardener here and am in AZ too! Planted seeds outside today. Our backyard is the desert. I do battle with the bunnies and saw a squirrel today. Grrr. I bought two of the stackables and then they were out everywhere. I can tell you will be very encouraging. Thank you!

Just an idea, Harbor Freight has dollies for moving furniture that act like a turntable under your stackable pots. Hope to follow your idea 'cause you can't beat fresh snap beans!!😊😊😊

Oh that's a great idea. I put wheels on it one time but AZ got 125 degrees that year and it literally melted 😆

Thank you for the tip on the cinnamon. I would like to see how the stacking planters work for you. I want to buy them but some people said they fall over. I would only stack 3 for herbs. My beans are in a rectangular planter that has a trellis attached. I mostly plant herbs, greens for salad, beans, flowers. take care! 🌻🐞

Thank you, beautiful Queen, for a very informative video. I'm a beginner and learning as much as I can before getting started. I just caught the Mother's Day sale for the greenstalk. I purchase a few stackables with the wheels and spinner from Lowe's to get the hang of things before migrating to my greenstalk. Baby steps lol. Just subscribed:) Looking forward to watching more of your videos and journey. Continue to have a blessed day!

We planted beans in a clay soil and they sid great. They just don't like cold or constantly wet soil. We also planted in a large clear tub once and they didn't do too bad.

I swear you can plant beans anywhere, it improves the soil too.

I have the dollar tree stack planter but I have it all unassembled on the ground as we have such high winds I would have to use rebar in the middle and would need that center hole drilled in all to stack - too much trouble. I have had lettuces, marigolds, beans, radishes and now pansies in these. I live in the Mojave desert Zone 8b at 3,400' elevation with a 4 season climate with not too frigid winters here.

Hello Shamira 👋🤗 I’m a new sub here. My name is Debbie and I live in Michigan. I love your garden! Thank you for the cinnamon tip on the fungus gnats. Those little buggers can be annoying lol. I have a horrible weed problem during the summer here so this year I’m thinking of doing more container gardening than in ground gardening. We don’t have a long gardening season so I don’t like to waste my time and energy pulling weeds 😆. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and I’ll be watching and catching up with your videos. Shalom and God Bless🙏
@TeamBensonHomestead7 ай бұрын
Big welcome to my channel!!! Ugh weeds stink. I put down wood chips and that the only thing that saves me outside my bed. Now for my beds and pots I mulch alot with old plant materials and now I get very few weeds. But seeds in the desert have super deep roots so you are literally sweating trying to pull one weed 😆. But u love containers you can move them around too.
