I like how you placed the smaller pot in the new bigger pot, filled in potting soil to match levels and then firmed up a ready made planting hole. I’ve been digging too deep or too shallow and having to redo it this Hole time. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you...I've tried growing chives once or twice but didn't get anything. I'm inspired to give them another go.😃 I inherited a garlic chive plant from my mother. It's at least 30 years old and doing great! Your videos are excellent and super inspiring!👍

Chives are slow to germinate but usually are easy to grow. Wow 30 years!! Great job by you and your mother for taking such a good care👏👏 Happy gardening and thank you so much for always leaving an inspiring comment!💚

You water your seedlings the same as me! Poke some holes in a water bottle. I’ve tried so many different watering pales & this works the best.

I am a New subscriber. Thanks a lot for sharing this. Shouldn't we thin seedlings? Or its better not to disturb them?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 21 күн бұрын
Happy to have you with us👋 Chives usually starts in 1-2 stems but grow more as they mature. even if you thin seedlings and plant them individually, they will grow in bunches (in weeks). But if you decide to separate seedlings at the time of planting, just like onions disturbing roots is not an issue and they will thrive. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment and for subscribing!😊

Great video! Is it too hot to start sowing chives seed if the temperature is already above 80-90°F?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 5 күн бұрын
Although chives prefer cool weathers, they grow quicker in warm weathers and if you keep them in part shade you can harvest leaves for a while. If you see they start flowering very early, snip off the flowers to extend harvesting time. Happy growing and thank you so much for your comment!

Hiya. After seeding, can I keep them indoors at 15C - 21C until they start sprouting? Also, do I need to cover them with cling film until they sprout? And will seedlings survive 8C night time temperature if outdoors? Thanks.
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Ай бұрын
Hi there. Yes you can keep them inside until they germinate. If you keep soil moist (but not soggy) you don't need to cover them. And yes, 8C is ok, chives prefer cold temperature. Hope this helps and happy growing!

Can I put them in the house or outside get some sunlight?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 11 күн бұрын
If indoors, put them in a sunny windowsill. And for outside, part sun or shade will work too. Chives don't necessarily need full sun to grow. Thanks for visiting.

how often do you water chives?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 4 ай бұрын
It depends on the growing condition. Chives are cold crops, so if it is cool, you will need to water them every 2-3 days. Keep the soil moist but not soggy, and definitely don't let soil dry completely. Thank you for visiting!
@jacobbeam1202

Can you give them 2-4 hours of evening sun instead if your options are limited? Maybe additionally watering a bit to keep them moist? Just planted them this afternoon.
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Ай бұрын
I think so, you can grow them in part shade/part sun. they don't need too much direct sunlight. Happy growing and thank you for visiting!

I know chives are extremely easy once you have some, but how long does it take for ONE seed to multiply and make a bunch? Everyone always grows them in bunches, it is hard to tell how individual plants behave.

Mine always grow thin is there any reason for this ????
@TowardGarden

It is hard to tell without seeing. Maybe it is due to not enough light, no fertile soil ... Either provide adequate light or feed more frequent. Good luck!

How many times can you harvest this chives ?
@TowardGarden

Once established, you can harvest leaves every few weeks. They are perennial and will come back year after year, so basically you can harvest constantly. Happy growing and thank you for getting in touch!
