How to Grow Moonflower Indoors

Learn how to grow moonflowers indoors. These beautiful, fragrant flowers are fun to grow indoors. And they really do bloom with giant white flowers that smell heavenly! Moonflowers will perfume your indoors. You can even watch them unfurl. Find out how to plant moonflowers by seed and what kind of lighting they need. You want to have them under artificial, full-spectrum lighting that simulates daylight for 14-16 hours a day. They will bloom under the lights. Also keep them well-watered, but not soggy. If they are growing for more than a month, feed them with a well-balanced organic fertilizer, like a 5-5-5. Also, plant the seeds in a lightweight potting soil or seed starting mix.

Thank you for being so detailed about the preferences of the seeds when planting. I have tried several methods to start these things & only one seed out of 20 germinated to produce a leaf. I have some nice giant moonflower seeds I don’t want to waste, so this helps a lot!

It blooming while small means it doesn't plan on living long. But it's true you can just continuely start new ones from seed. Here in South Florida they're native perennials, rooting wherever the stems touch soil. They love super high humidity and consistently moist soil so you only see them growing around lakes amongst other plants where the air is always super humid. In the open, they're killed by infestations of spider-mites wherever the air does get drier during the day. Spider-mites just find them irresistible.

Awesome video, I have 3 seedlings coming up in a window facing SW and it won’t be long before they bud out, if planted outdoors, do they need full sun or shed

Darlene Scott, Thanks for watching and glad you liked video! That's really exciting about your plants. If you plant them outdoors, they like full or partial sun, in order to flower. However, when you transition them outdoors, don't put them into direct sunlight right away, as that could shock them. Put them in an area that is bright but shaded and then gradually move them into the sun over the course of a few days. After a couple days in the shade, put them in morning sun for a couple of hours and then back in shade, and then repeat, gradually increasing the amount of sun each day until they're in full sun.

How would you describe the fragrance?

Bridget Mannion, The fragrance is a little like the trumpet flower (brugmansia) if you've ever smelled that. Very mild and floral and memorable. There is a perfume called White Shoulders. Some people have said it smells like that, too.

Airwick does a home parfum of this plant with essential oil! That's how I found out about this plant coz the air wick is absolutely amazing! It's literally addictive, I'm waiting next month for some seeds so I can try to grow it at home I'm absolutely obsessed with they're scent

Can you transport datura seeds after growing them in a propagation dome that's about 2 inches deep? I want to put them in a pot and check if they have germinated but I'm afraid of taking them out of the propagation tray and moving the soil around.

Would that light be good for mature moonflower plants? I planted my moon flowers in pretty large pots this year and I’m trying to keep them alive.

Beautifully Broken, If they are in large pots, that fixture setup might not work. But you could use a full-spectrum light bulb positioned over each pot. Hey thanks so much for the video, I have two of these currently coming up and I was wondering if a having them in a window that gets full sunlight most of the day would be sufficient ? I don't want to buy gardening lamps :'(

Sonia Higgins, Thanks for watching. That's great you have some moonflowers coming up. The window with full sunlight most of the day could work--especially if it's pretty bright sunlight. We are heading into longer days on the western hemisphere, so that will also help. You'll have to wait and see. I would make sure to rotate the plant regularly, so it gets the direct sunlight on all sides. Let me know how it goes!

Do they only come in white. I had some last year and I They didn't come up this year.

Sindy Baker, Yes, they only come in white. They are annuals, and only last one season, so you generally need to plant new seeds the following year.

wolfgang fok, Being a little rootbound can cause earlier blooming. It's also a good idea to not have it in too big of a pot, so yuou avoid root rot.

What and how do the perfume of the plants smell like?

wolfgang fok, They smell somewhat like angel's trumpet (Brugmansia), but a little different. Someone also told me that the scent reminded them of the perfume White Shoulders, which was based on various white flowers, including gardenia, jasmine, lily-of- the-valley and tuberose.
