There are two main ways to start moonflower seeds: directly sowing them outdoors or starting them indoors before transplanting outside. Direct Sowing Outdoors: This is the simpler method and is generally recommended because moonflowers don't like their roots being disturbed. Here's what you'll need to do: Timing: Wait until at least two weeks after the last frost date in your area. Moonflowers are frost-sensitive and won't germinate in cold soil. Scarification (optional): Moonflower seeds have a hard outer shell that can benefit from scarification, which helps them absorb water and germinate faster. You can nick the seed coat with a nail file or sandpaper. Soaking: Soak the seeds in warm water overnight, even if you don't scarify them. Planting: Choose a location in your garden that gets full sun. Prepare the soil by removing weeds and loosening it up a bit. Sow the seeds directly into the soil about ¼ inch deep and space them a few inches apart. Water the area gently. Starting Indoors (for transplanting later): This method gives you more control over germination but requires more work. Here's how to do it: Timing: Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date in your area. Scarification and Soaking: Similar to direct sowing, you can scarify and soak the seeds overnight in warm water to improve germination. Containers: Use small pots filled with a well-draining seed-starting mix. Peat pots are a good option because you can plant them directly in the ground later without disturbing the roots. Planting: Plant the seeds about ¼ inch deep and water the pots gently. Light and Temperature: Place the pots in a warm location (around 70°F) that gets bright, indirect sunlight. You can use a heat mat to help with germination. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Transplanting: Once the seedlings have a few sets of true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, you can harden them off and transplant them outdoors to a sunny location with a support structure for the vines. General Tips: Moonflowers are vigorous growers and benefit from regular watering, especially during hot weather. They prefer poor to moderately fertile soil. Avoid over-fertilizing as this can lead to more foliage and fewer flowers. Moonflowers are known for their fragrant, night-blooming flowers. Be aware that all parts of the moonflower plant are toxic, so keep them out of reach of children and pets. Good Luck with your moonflowers!

This video was very helpful especially since you’re in zone 5. I live in Sweden in a usda 6b zone equivalent. The summers here don’t get very hot either. The question I have for you is what amount of time did if take from planting the seeds to getting your first blooms? This could help me time my seed starting.

I think I started them too early but the seeds took 3 or 4 days to germinate. I think they don't bloom until July or August Which why I give a head start inside but they dont like being moved around which why I use peat pots I keep thinking that I am going to try and direct plant them and start some early and see which does the best I remember the year I had the luck with them was when they had plenty water and fertilizer
