If you are a teacher, administrator, therapist, or any other professional who works with children who have special needs, you have probably encountered an angry parent.
How have you handled that?
Did you keep your cool, but then go back to your room or office and seethe at how you were treated?
Setting limits with children is something I’ve been trained to do. I’m guessing that you have been taught to do the same. Setting limits with the bad behavior of an adult is a whole different story!!! This is a muscle that many people do not exercise. It makes us uncomfortable so we just avoid doing it.

try live with angry asian parents... i can't give my own opinion. judgemntal, doesn't believe with their own child, keep yelling at us, no freedom.. sometimes i sleep alot just to live in my imagination that i created just to be free. my friends understand me better than my parents. i never laugh when i'm at home and only do when i 'm with my friends. ...

Keep a to do list on your phone using your notes app and keep it an open tab 24/7 if you’re willing to keep your Xbox with you, that should help. But if not, let me know. Set an alarm too so you don’t forget, even if there’s no approximate time, set an estimate time. Better than forgetting about it the whole time yk

Sounds like it's time to set limits on how she treats you. Once she starts to get negative and disrespectful, you simply say" If you can speak to me in a kind a respectful way, I'll be happy to sit here and talk to you. If you continue to be hateful and disrespectful this conversation is over....then wait to see what she does. the ball is in her court. It's her choice. If she wants to talk with you from now on, it should be on your terms, not hers. If she starts to speak to you in a disrespectful way...simply say This conversation is over and get up and walk out or quietly hang up the phone. It may take a time or two before she gets the idea that she is no longer allowed to be rude and hateful to you...Simply don't allow it. We teach other people how to treat us...I am sorry that you get treated this way by your mother, but she needs to learn to treat you better and only you can do that. Just remember that setting limits with children is much easier than setting limits with an adult...It's a muscle we don't often exercise. Trust me, once you start exercising that muscle, it gets easier. Good Luck!

Same. My mom goes off every damn day. She’s a ticking time bomb. I get anxious when I’m with her because she gets mad over the smallest things. I could probably handle it if she reprimanded me calmly like an adult but her “default” mad is always to the extreme. She would scream over somebody leaving the soy sauce bottle on the table instead of the pantry. I cant wait till I’m out of here

I've actually not had to use this with a parent, but I've used this on a staff person who needed to follow through on an assignment. Before the 2+2 I waited 3 weeks for a response. After 2+2 I got a response and action within 30 minutes!!!

Don't EVER allow a parent to be inappropriate with you again. You set the limits on how you will speak/interact with them and then see if they comply with your conditions. If they do not, the conversation is over and you can say we'll try again later. Good Luck. It's a muscle we do not exercise, but once you use it. you will feel empowered!!!! Remember all you are asking for is kindness and respect. IF they cannot give that, they do not get to speak to you. Period.

Wow I really didn't know that yelling at your kids is a bad behaviour, cause my mom talks normally like that, (that doesn't bother me she can scream if she wants i dont care) but what bothers me is when she hits me, not like hitting like normal hitting she slaps me and punches me in my face sometimes pushes me, for example today she took my chain and whipped me like 10 times, because I hit my sister with a ball, and like my sister wasn't even mad or crying she was fine, but my mom saw it and she took my chain and whipped me, I have scars on my legs and arms now, she has like some serious anger issues, like when my little 5 yr old sister triggers her easily like she spills some water accidentaly she slaps her across her face, yes she is 5 yr old but i dont know if thats illegal or not, cause in my country (Bosnia) people don't care about those problems, I really didn't know that yelling at your children is bad cause that's the system in my country, and if you want to know I'm twelwe, and I'm a boy

Nepoznati I am so sad to hear about the treatment you and your sister get. Yelling lowers a child's self esteem and makes that child feel like they deserve that kind of treatment. No One should have that kind of treatment! I am not familiar with the culture of Bosnia, but I am familiar with what is good for children. Yelling and hitting and hurting are not the ways to teach, to get compliance and to encourage children to be the best they can be. I hope that you will someday NOT to the same with your own children. Break the cycle and do something different! It sounds like your mother was possibly treated this way as a child and she's just doing the same. She may also have some anger inside of her that comes out when you kids do something wrong. Try to be loving toward her and maybe that will help. Thanks for reaching out!

Carla Butorac Yeah, I was thinking and talking to my friend about the same thing, I promised to him that I will never ever hit my son or daughter if I would ever have them, and yes she was treated even worse as a child, once she told me how her parwnts behaved to her, even the teachers in the schools used to hit kids when they were naughty, and in the past time she was in a bad situation, first like a few months ago her dad died (my grandfather) he was like really young to die, then my dad had to go to Iraq to work, that was also pretty hard for her, and especially staying with four children in the house, I really get her now because in that shape I think anybody would have anger issues, but anyways thanks for the advice I'll try to be as nice as I can to her :)

I've noticed that when ......happens you......., What's up"? Do lots of listening, summarize what she says and then ask, "what else?" then summarize what she says and then ask "what else"? until you get to the real reason/reasons why she does what she does. Tell her what you want as you move forward and then say, I wonder if there is a way that you can get what you need/want and I can too? Do you have someone you can reach out to for other advice/support? I wish you the best! You are meant to do great things in the world so hang in there. You will get through.

I have a question, I run a *free* kids program at my local community center. And we often see many parents disrespecting me and my other volunteers. Our biggest issue is people missing a sign up window and then swarming our email or in person last minute. Everyone wants an exception! What should we do?

Do you make that clear on your website? If so, let them know on our site that they will get priority on your next offering. When they swarm you, let them know you are full.

then ask that the other person be respectful if they want the conversation to continue. If they can't then tell them you can try again later. You do not have to subject yourself to abuse. Put the ball back in their court and see what they decide. Do they really want to talk to you or not.

My mother is like Michael Bay and Stanley Kubrick combined she’s emotional, hot tempered, Dramatic has a strong dominant personality, and harsh also whatever mistake I make she would rub it in my face and scream like a banshee two days ago she yelled at me for having my phone on vibrate, not reading her text messages and accidentally missing nearly a whole social gathering then shes even said this once “How are going to hold down a job” I wish I could get someone to knock some sense into her and give her a taste of her own medicine

unfortunately she is continuing with similar treatment that she got. Just so sad for both of you. Her behavior says to me that she is very unhappy and has not had a positive role model in her life so that she can give you one. I wonder what she would say if you gave her some extra kindness and understanding, Please know that things can be different for your future. Stop the legacy of this behavior. Don't pass it on to any children you may have. This can stop with you, You are worth it and you deserve to be treated with respect and love. If she can't do it, perhaps keeping your distance or setting limits on what you will subject yourself to, may help. Good luck!

Both of my parents have anger issues, my dad gets upset very easy and is struggling I’m afraid he might take my devices and break them. My mom is always blaming me or everyone else she doesn’t apologize and makes me feel like I am the reason for all of her stress. I'm so sorry you are going through this Sophia, It sounds like your parents are struggling too. Hopefully there is someone you can talk to because your parents are not using strategies that are available to help problem solve. There are many other ways to deal with feelings of anger and frustration. Their loud voices and aggressive behavior tells me that they don't have the tools they need to cope. You are just a child, trying to learn the ways of the world. You are not the reason for your mom's stress, my guess is that she has just never learned how to handle normal everyday situations that come up with life/ raising children/running a home. One thing that you can do besides talking to a responsible trusted adult is to make sure you learn ways to handle stress the correct way and don't repeat what your parents are doing if you have children someday. It doesn't have to be this hard and painful. I wish the best for you!

How can you help a parent get help to learn to communicate with more respect? I sometimes send my mom self improvement videos and she gets furious and tells me to stop sending her dumb videos. I know she desires to be better but when help comes from her son her pride kicks in and she flips. How can someone guide them in the right direction?

I think that she will have to make that decision. The only person any of us can control is ourselves. Try asking your mom how you can help her today. She might be shocked at your behavior and you may be shocked at how she may change toward you. I will let you in on a little secret. The bottom line for the female gender is respect. That's it, if a woman feels respected, she can completely change her attitude. It's when a woman feels disrespected, that she gets angry. I remember once when my children were younger and I was angry about something. I raised my voice, was slamming drawers shut, walking around my kitchen in a huff. My daughters scattered away quickly, but it was my son who stayed....he stayed away from the kitchen but was watching me. As I started to calm down, he moved a bit closer to me. As I calmed down further, he moved closer ( I could see him out of the corner of my eye) When I was pretty well over whatever had just happened, my son came closer and said. " Do you need a hug?" Well how could I be mad after that????!!! He showed me respect to lt me get calmer, then slowly came toward me to give my his love and support. Respect. I'll never forget his act of kindness and respect toward me on that day. Give it a try and see how showing the utmost respect for your mom works for you. You might see a different person.

My mom is generally nice but she tends to get angry quick. She wakes me up every morning and since I was awake but looked like I was asleep, I jumped to sit up, after she said “wake up” while I was sitting up, I said I was up, very calmly. Then she yelled at me. Tired of this, tired of that, and then she slams the door while muttering to herself. I hate how fast she switches up and I sometimes feel like I’m stepping on needles just to keep her happy. I also accidentally sound a certain way when I say things and she takes it like I’m trying to be disrespectful. How do I deal with this when she switches up over the smallest things?

Yato SaMA I'm telling you that if your father is like what I have heard than you need to teach him some common n sense. Tell your mum that you are sick of your dad's horrible behaviour and tell her about your mental pressures you get from him. Since your mother sides with you she will probably agree. Then when your father is calm you simply go up to him with your mother and tell him that you are done with his behaviour and you don't want anything to do with him. If he just gets angry then leave the situation and Don't speak to him. Just because he is a parent doesn't mean he can control and abuse you so go and fight back. Maybe ask your school fir help as this is not acceptable

My mother’s family has a history of mental illness. Her brother was schizophrenic, and I only have a diagnosis for him because he was so bad they took him to a doctor. However, all of her biological siblings have some form of illness, but none of them are diagnosed. I believe my mother also has some form of mental illness ( bipolar ) but she has never been diagnosed. At face value she is normal, but since I live with her I know that she has random episodes of rage. I have tried to notice and see if there is a pattern to her behaviour. From what I can tell, whenever she feel a threat or sense of competition she looses all morality and lashes out. When she feel a lack of control over someone, forget her children but even her spouse, she again launches into a fit of rage. The aftermath of the rage is her knowing that her behaviour was unacceptable, but to apologise means to loose authority. So she pretends the person in front of her is in the wrong until she has convinced herself that is the case. She shuns, hits and spits at whoever she has had a confrontation with. Other than this she will cry, again to paint the person who she has has a confrontation with as a villain, again to convince even herself that she plays victim to her episodes. As a child this was very confusing to me. I was beaten, I am always falling under verbal abuse, I can’t remember any of my childhood other than the times I was physically or sexually abused. I just couldn’t justify her behaviour in my head. She was a loving mother one minute, the next I was being kicked around on the floor or being scream at for not knowing where her glasses where. But now at 19, I know that she is victim to her illness. And instead of trying to build relations with her out of love, which results in abuse, I should love her from a distance. That way the memories of her I have from here forward should be neutral, not painful. I used to try and sit with her talk with her, because the few moments of love I felt from her were worth the possibilities of her beating me or shouting at me. But one day after an episode she had with me, I saw her cry. I realised she is frustrated with her own behaviour. Her illness has taken the best of her. I vowed not to make her feel that way again. I will love her from a distance. She absolutely nothing triggers an episode. And so that she doesn’t notice her illness any further. At least not because of me.

We teach people how they can treat us. The next time your mom starts to be abusive, you leave the house, go to your room, call a friend to pick you up, call another family member etc. You must somehow let your mom know that is she wants to speak to you, it must be done in a kind way. You can also perhaps say that if she doesn't speak to you respectfully, you will speak to your school counselor about it. Most parents do NOT want to involve outsiders. Some parents need a bit of a wake up call that they do not have the right to be mentally abusive. You will be surprised at how quickly your mom will change her tune if she really wants to talk to you. Show her that if she wants the privilege of speaking to you, it must be with kindness. Also don't forget to treat your mom with kindness and respect as well. Best of luck!!!

Does your dad have any kind of benefits? vet? medicaid? medicare? Are you still in school? if you are in HS you can reach out to your counselor to get some idea of resources in your area. If your school has a social worker, they have all kinds of resources that you could tap into. Knowledge is Power and the more knowledge you can arm yourself with the better you can get the help your dad needs. Sometimes communities have social workers that work with non-profit organizations that can be a wealth of information for you in your community. You may surprised to see the help and relief you can get if you just ask. If you get to the right person, they can help you surround your dad with help and you can get some space to have a better quality of life. Remember the strongest sword goes through the hottest fire. Keep up your grit and start looking for what you need!

I know from experience that a 15 year old boy is ALWAYS hungry! My guess is that your mom is exhausted. I know mom's are supposed to cook, clean, pay bills, work ( sometimes two jobs) worry about their children, make sure their health, education and spiritual life is taken care of ......but mom's get overwhelmed too. My suggestion is that you ask her if you can get dinner started, help her when she's cooking or even learn to make dinner yourself. Learning to cook for yourself is an outstanding life long skill. All of our kids cook including our son and our son in laws. I always say if you can read, you can cook. Give that a try and see if that helps to change your mom's attitude. You are old enough to "partner" with her in household chores to help lighten her load. Your behavior is that you are hungry ( totally natural) her behavior is that she is overwhelmed ( it happens to all of us) Let me know what happens over time. Good Luck!

My dad has really low patience, especially with me. He would always get mad at the smallest things. He always sees what i do wrong and never sees what i do right. There are just some times that i don't understand him. Sometimes he threatens me if i don't answer him when he's angry. But sometimes when i try to tell him the truth, he would say that I'm arguing with him thus i would get hit by a freaking steel pipe. I barely even remember how long it's been since i smiled at home. Staying with friends is nice because they understand you. I love my family, but it's my dad that makes me think twice before even going home. Everyday there would always be something that would make him moody the whole day. Trust me, avoiding him isn't an option. He would always tell me not to do anything that might affect his mood for the day. I've tried that but he is always on edge. Tried joking with him and he slapped me. Ireally don't know how to deal with him. Talked to a school councilor about this, then my dad was called to speak to the councilor. When he got back, he said that I'm an ungrateful bastard that doesn't know how to appreciate what people do to me. What has he done? He's only ever made me depressed.

Kaz, I can't tell you how sorry I am that you have to deal with this situation at home. My only guess is that your dad may have had some trauma somewhere in his life and has never learned to deal with it. My hope for you is that you break the cycle of mistreatment/childhood trauma when it's your turn. Please know that not every father acts like this. I also encourage you to continue to speak to someone you trust. If involving your dad only causes trouble, ask that trusted person to keep him out of it. You will need to learn to get through this until you can move on to a healthier place. Maybe when you leave for college or when you get a job and can have your own place. That day will come. Until then, I'm wondering what your dad would do if you said to him, what can I do for you today? Can I get you something? Can I do something to help you out right now? My guess is that he is angry about something and just has no idea how to deal with it. Stay safe, and I do hope only good things for you!

@@carlabutorac6240 I may not have said this online, but he did have a problem with his parents when he was a child. His father was a discipline teacher, I'm guessing back in the day discipline teachers were extremely strict. One day he visited his grandma. He went on a bike with his cousin near the mountains, it wasn't that high but it still was pretty dangerous. His cousin accidentally pushed him too much and he fell down the mountain(It may not be a mountain) Almost his whole body was covered with blood. He was crying with pain, then his dad came and "beat him up" while he was bleeding and in pain. My dad told me how much his dad controlled his life. How there were times for studying and learning. And if he or his brother weren't studying when it was time to study, his dad would throw anything he could reach at them. I can see why he keeps getting mad at me. His dad's way of teaching him is being used on me. And even worse now, sometimes he says "Don't try to make your little brother as worse as you are". What I'm afraid of is that his anger problems are starting to affect me. I get mad way too easily now. I now have developed the habit of talking back. I'm thinking of not having kids or even getting married. I'm afraid of how his anger will affect me.

@@kaz_araya7960 you can stop the cycle of abuse if that is your goal.. there is help to control anger that you may have because of your dad. I think it's a positive that you at least understand why your dad does and says what he does. I know that doesn't really help you in your day to day interactions with him, but at least I hope you can see that it's your dad's issues, not that you are unworthy or unloveable.

@@carlabutorac6240 I've seen this and realised, both my mom and my dad have put a time for me to be able to use my phone or any electronic. 1 hour 30 minutes. From 5 - 6:30 PM. Its at that time they become extremely aggressive and start looking for things to prevent me from even touching my phone. My mom, she'll look through my contacts and my class group chat. Then she'll ask me if I did it or not. I show her I've done it, then she asks why isn't it the same as the other students. Like, it's my answer, my way of answering it! My dad is no better, he'll ask me to help him to do some stuff. Then when it's 6:30 I can't even play games or do anything. I told them they took time from me because I helped them. But they don't care. After the time limit had passed, they become normal. The tone of their voices go back to normal too. Usually they'd shout at me when I'm playing video games. And most of the times when I'm playing, both of them will look at me and start shaking heads or make disappointed faces. I ask them what's wrong, then they say "When you're studying, you're not that focused as much as how focused you are playing games. You'd start itching, get some drinks". I am almost losing my mind with them. I AM FORCED TO LEARN ALMOST 8 HOURS A DAY AND SIT AT THE SAME SPOT. What do they expect. Even when playing games, I also move around a lot.

It's annoying because whenever I provide a reasonable reason for something or try to understand why they're so annoyed they just say "Shut up", "Stop talking back" or just tell me to go away aggressively. If I spoke to them they same way they do to me they'd have none of it and it annoys me that they seem to think they're superior to me just because they're my parents. I know people say respect your parents but I don't really agree with many of their views and they won't let me do what I enjoy and pressure me to do things that they think are best when I'm at an age where I can do that myself.

I'm sorry that you are having such a difficult time with your parents. You will eventually be an age that you can make decisions for yourself. I hope that you will make good decisions and that you learn how not to treat any child that you someday will have. Children should be treated with kindness, respect and guided gently to the right path. Use this experience to change they way you've been treated. Promise yourself that you will not do the same. You won't regret it! I treated my 4 children with love, kindness, respect and firm guidance. They all grew up to be kind, respectful, loving adults.... just the way they were treated. It works!

Pascal, I'm so sorry to hear how much you are struggling with this. My guess is that there is something in your parents' past that taught them this was the way to raise children. I hope that someday you will do things differently and break the pattern! You might try saying to your parents, "What can I do for you today?" It may shock them and shock you at how they will respond. If you think about it, the only person we can really control is ourselves. Perhaps if you change what you do, you will change what they do. Give it a try!

jacinta, I'm so sorry to hear that. My guess is that your mom is struggling with something someone has done to her :-( that doesn't make it right, but hopefully you will break the cycle and learn from this mistake so you won't do the same someday if you have children. Is there someone you can talk to? You are wanted. You are beautiful and there is a plan for you to make a difference in this world. Remember that!

I have no freedom in my family. My dad called me to go to bed and he reminded me to turn off my computer, I did and yet he yells at me to hurry up. Then he rushes over and fucking hits me. Holy shit he has anger issues and no patience. He’s so fucking two faced. One morning he buys me 2 Big Macs and congrats me on my report card. 10 hours later he fucking slaps me to go to bed.

Can you talk to your school counselor and ask for some guidance? It sounds like your dad has some unresolved anger issues and he's taking it out on you. My hope is that you can get to a better place of peace in our home and that someday when you have children, you won't follow the same path as your dad.
