My girlfriend has a little sister that constantly calls me a girl cause of my long hair. I know it's a child so I always correct her. But this really tells something about the gender stereotypes that we pass on onto our children.
@BrandonL_002 жыл бұрын
I saw something similar with a girl who always shaved her head. Some people would always think she's a guy just for her shaved head even though she wore feminine type clothes and makeup. She said how she would correct people but they'd still insist on calling her with masculine pronouns. Some people are pretty weird like that, I can't tell if they're being petty or if like you said they associate these stereotypes with gender.

I was hanging out with two of my buddies, traditional kinda dudes, in walks this other guy with beautiful long hair, they start commenting to each other what a hottie he is without even looking at his face, it takes them a moment to realize it was a dude and not some hot chick. The thing with a lot of men, especially cat callers, they don't even need to be attracted to a girl to behave this way, it is merely the presence of so-called "feminine features" that triggers that sort of behavior out of them, made me realize all those other times they sexualized a girl on instinct, it was less because they were attracted and more because they wanted to show the other guys how manly they are by sexualizing women from a 0.1 second glance.

I woulda upgraded the man-bun into something more viking looking. Sometimes man-buns just look bad. Then again, I think buns in general look bad (even on women), I feel like its maybe a more practical way to get your hair out of the way, but in my opinion when you want to care about how others see you there are a lot better ways to style long hair. Its usually how the long hair is displayed that impacts peoples opinions.

I'm a girl with short hair and I've received some cruel comments about it so I kind of understand the "go outside of any gender norm and you're seen as doing it wrong". People have called my hair an "ugly rat's nest" and some have told me that no guy wants to date a girl with short hair, even though I wear dresses and heels and am generally girly/feminine. Although there is one thing on your side that you can use against them, history. One thing to tell them in response to their comments is that men used to have long hair until the Industrial revolution when bosses made workers cut their hair so it didn't get caught in the machinery. But many men up through even the early 19th century had long hair. If these trolls would have called the founding fathers "women with beards" or told them that they look like girls, that would have been the last thing they said as those were effectively a challenge to a duel back then.

I'm 70 years old. I've grown my hair long several times throughout my life. I started growing it long again at the start of the COVID quarantine. I've had my share of grief when I've had long hair. In the early 70's it was from employers. Over the years the attitude towards men with long hair has changed. In the old days, women readily accepted guys with long hair. In fact they often really preferred it. This was especially true for young women. It was the guys that would give me grief. Insults like accusing me of looking like a girl, etc. But now, it seems to have reversed. Women are the ones who are the most critical and most women will flat out refuse to date a man my age with long hair. On the very rare occasion that a man is openly critical, I assume it's out of jealousy. I suspect most hater guys that are my age are dreaming of a time when they actually had hair to grow.

Long hair rocks! I started growing my hair out in 2012 after my mother passed away. My hair was always short and my mother always thought I should grow it longer a bit. I kept it at shoulder length. I had to be daring & told myself to grow it little longer & longer. At first, it was hard to go with it because my clients were surprised by my different hairstyle. I often would make up an excuse & carry on. I did lose one client over that which I thought was silly. Now, I'm letting it grow little longer. I still have a lot to learn how to take care of it, but I love the look of long hair, like medieval warriors. I was inspired from one of those paintings where a woman was falling in love with a knight who had a long hair. Now, with pandemic, it's becoming a popular choice. I'm glad to see people opening their mind to longer hair. I really like Greg Berzinsky's hair at shoulder length. It really looks good. I should get back into weight lifting & buff up again & be a model. Ha Thanks for creating this video. Ignore those haters. If everyone had the same hairstyle, the world would be a boring place. I also find that sometimes what people see in us that they think of as effeminate or feminine like are just things that people with long hair do. "You flip your hair around like a girl." Love the message behind this video.. unfortunately in my area people won’t watch this because of the language spoken, but at least I got a boost of confidence out of this to keep me growing my hair no matter what they say .. cheers

I looked for this video today, because someone, again, asked me to cut my hair because I dont look good. I just responded to him that I respect your opinion and thanks to him. I always believe that its always me to decide for my self, I grew my hair for almost 1 and half years and I focus more on people that appreciated my hair and not to those who hated it. Thank you for this content, it only means that I am not alone in this long hair haters society hahaha

Why respect their opinion? It deserves to be disrespected. Stuff em.

I think Greg's advice is spot on. I don't think most people care about the length of someone's hair but rather the way its displayed is maybe against their preference. Which can still be valuable to listen to because maybe you'll self reflect on the way you style your hair and could potentially find more ways to style that look better even to yourself. In some cases it could be everything else about your style(clothing, facial hair, etc..) that just doesnt fit and upon reflection afterrreceiving a comment might steer you into a better direction that even the people that were being negative end up having a 180 degree opinion change. While I do think style and what looks good is mostly subjective, I do think there are ways to reach a more or mostly accepted style based on what patterns humans tend to like. Artists will do the same things, studying shapes and composition, keeping in mind that humans brains are wired in such a way that certain rules tend to be objectively more pleasing to most (if not all) people. And I am sure you could translate that shape language and composition principles to anything regarding visual style. Even clothes for example.

Excellent video, really needed to watch this video, as since I've unfortunately cut all my hair and beard off! Everyone in my home town has been saying, hair looks so much better short, didn't like your long hair! Thing is tho i am going to grow my hair back, with my natural salt and pepper colour! As I'm 43 i even questioned my own mind! If you know what I mean, but I'm going for it again, especially after your video 👍

I don't know you Trav but from what I can tell, you appear to be humble and wise. Yes, I am growing my hair long. The most difficult part of long hair in my personal opinion is if you live an active lifestyle like myself and its hot because I sweat a lot and my hair will be soaked. This is fine if you dont like feeling fresh and clean but I do. Regardless, I love long hair because its comfortable and the versatility of styles are refreshing. I had long hair as a young teenager so its reminiscent of some fond times as well. Hair is soft so its like a cloud caressing your face, when its nice and tidy that is lol. Its as well reflective of my black sheep identity to be against the grain. Its also a rewarding experience because you get out what you put in when it comes to care, so as you nurture your hair with organic products and proper maintenance it is much healthier and people who know nice hair will immediately notice this and admire it regardless of their ideal image of a "Man". You only live once folks, if you are afraid to grow your hair because of what other people think then maybe thats the perfect way to approach your unhealthy mentality of caring too much about what people think about you. Like a spiritual journey of "Growth" :p. GROW ON!

Great video. I'm from North Africa, we have a pretty conservative culture. When I decided to grow out my hair, my family waged a holy war against me. Every time they see me they roll their eyes and say negative comments about my hair. When I walk in the street, sometimes I feel like an extraterrestrial. I've cut my hair many times just to please my family, but I don't give a shit anymore. I've growing my hair for two years now and it reached my shoulders. I'll keep growing it until it reaches my chest.
