After having multiple false starts with flossing over the years, I tried the floss picks. The kind with u-shaped plastic that hold approximately a half inch of floss. Even though I know that these picks aren't as effective as old-fashioned floss, I find them much easier and pleasant to use, so I use them daily. Maybe one day I'll get my act together with real flossing, but for now they do a decent job.

Wouldn't moving the floss up and down while it's between the gum and tooth cause the plaque to go deeper into the gum? I was told to make a C shape around tooth and pull away from the gums. That way you are not pushing the plaque deeper into the gums. Can you talk about that? Thanks. I love your videos.

That's probably the number 1 dental question! And it unfortunately doesn't really have an answer haha! Truly - as long as you ARE flossing - that's the main goal. If you floss before or after brushing usually doesn't matter unless your dentist has a specific recommendation for your individual mouth! Hope this helps!

I don't wrap the floss too tightly around my middle fingers when I start. But I will look down halfway through flossing and notice the circulation to my fingers is cut off. I don't know how to modulate the tension as I am flossing? I hate it.

Only the wrap the the amount of floss around your middle fingers as is needed for it to hold. Also you could unwrap and re-wrap the floss from your fingers every so often to give them a breather for a moment.

Do you use that same 2-inch piece to do all your teeth though? Whenever I floss (I must admit I need to up my game, hence finding your channel). I would do maybe three teeth then re-wrap and get a fresh bit for the next few teeth. I will pull about 18inch of floss to start with. I just wrap around index fingers then use index/thumb to floss. I must try the middle finger to see if it makes it any easier.

Let me share a tip that makes your flossing technique even better..... Instead of just wrapping around your middle finger...... Wrap around your two middle fingers wow they are spread apart just a bit... Wind it around two or three times. Now you don't cut your circulation off even on the tightest teeth. You're welcome 😀😀😀😀😀😀

Dental Hygiene with Whitney yes it does help a lot thank u!! It didn't hurt anymore today!! xx also I have another question: I use way, WAY more floss than Im supposed to! I'll break up 43cm but then I'm already at the end of the floss and I'm only halfway done with my upper teeth! Why is that??? Am I doing something wrong? TT I hold it like I'm supposed to, unwind and wind like I'm supposed to, but it always happens!!! I go through floss like gums.... Also, I have this habit of using tissues to wipe the floss all the way down from the section I've used (if I see food bits and stuffs) it shreds when I do that, I wipe it down so I can reuse the floss because I'm wasting money from using so much floss. Ahh. It's really discouraging :( Please help me! Also, your videos are very informative and I loveeeeee watching you ahahahaha

I know it will sound really gross but I'm not really used to dental floss, I use it twice a day just on my front teeth and canins because I can actually see they're dirty, and go seldomly on my other teeth but everytime I do it I can't reach the gums properly and if I do it it hurts and my gums tend to bleed :( and it's very hard to reach the back teeth, you know the last one (I forgot their name in english, like the molars but the last ones?) :( What should I do? Should I substitute the floss with a water flosser or what? I can't reach the gums, it's too gross, I feel a mix of pain and disgust when I try to do it. I know, I'm childish, but when I see that I'm bleeding I get a little dizzy "Funny" thing is that my dentist said to me that I do clean my teeth properly (I'm an aggressive brusher if it helps to envision the situation), like wtf, I don't think so, I see my teeth and they're not perfectly clean Pls help .-.

I can't tag you, otherwise it doesn't show my response :( anyway thank you! Hopefully I'll have to go to the dentist soon because I've had something that looked like a beginning of a periodontal abscess, but then disappeared🤷🏼‍♀️ and before of that I had a molar that did bother me and maybe it was because of a cavity. I'm not prone to cavities but this time maybe it's because last year I couldn't go to the dentist because of covid-19 and also because I didn't have money. So hopefully I will go soon and also have a proper cleaning (last time she didn't do it well). However, I'm following your tips (brushing correctly, mouthwashing twice a day, flossing, but on certain teeth I struggle going right on the gums, but I think it's better than nothing) and I have to say that they're working! I'm really surprised. It seems like my teeth are even whiter! I'll try the alternatives, thank you! Subscribed!

I'm not embarrassed to say I flossed incorrectly until I was asked to demonstrate for the periodontist in my early 30s. Dental professionals always have those patients who swear up and down they floss as they're supposed to despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Let it be known..... The dental professionals always know the truth. In my case I was damaging my inherited thin gums to the point of eroding by brushing for two - two minute cycles (4 minutes in the morning and after desert) and damaging them by jack hammering the floss in. Grafts, while an easy and relatively painless procedure are not covered by insurance or cheap. Those in their mid 40s and up will tell you losing the gum between their teeth for whatever reason is regrettable. There is little that can be done to restore the gum between teeth. Grafts provide a new layer on the tooth; but not between the teeth. Correctly flossing and brushing CORRECTLY at least twice a day is all that is required to keep your beautiful smile into retirement. Cleaning twice a year is key as well. Allowing plaque and tartar to buildup is the quickest avenue to losing gum tissue. Just because it doesn't hurt or you can't see it doesn't mean it's not causing damage. I've seen may people walk in with a bright white smile and healthy looking gums walk out with tiny gaps between their teeth. The reason is obvious..... a thick layer of bleached white deposits was removed during cleaning. The deposits were thick enough to cause slight gum recession. This recession was only visible once the deposits were scraped off their teeth. I've never once heard anyone in the 30s, 40's, 50's or over say they regret taking five minutes each morning and night to care for their oral health. Everyone facing severe gum disease and tooth loss regrets not using 10 minutes of their day to care for their oral hygiene. Particularly those who had to pull the few teeth they still have to trade in for denture I'm their 50s. There is nothing sexy about trading oral care for a set of dentures for your 40th or 50th birthday. Some recession and some gum disease is expected as we age. Remember we were not supposed to live this long. Unfortunately we have not evolved to the point of growing a third set of teeth just yet. So in the meantime we must use our big brains to actively think ahead and care for our oral health now. Heart disease and other serious health problems can be a bonus for those who choose to neglect their oral health. Cheers

The fingers get wet with saliva and then floss keeps slipping!!!! WTF!!! I have been struggling with this for years! What is the exact length one needs to prevent this slippage? I am using a pretty long piece, but perhaps it is not long enough? Give me exact length if you can please. 007

sometimes a waxed floss can make it slippery! maybe consider trying an un-waxed floss! here's my video more about that --- hope this helps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqvYhHWGq9iAmdU

yea but how do you move to the next bit of floss if it's wrapped round

I have a lot of trouble with that, I end up going too far and where one finger doesn’t have enough floss to wrap around

No worries! Your dentist/hygienist should be able to help give you tips and tricks! If you're still having trouble - maybe a water flosser or interdental aids would better suit you. Hope that helps! Here is my video about interdental aids: teethtalkgirl.com/videos/interdental-brushes?rq=proxy%20

Jack, I was once like you. I didn't floss. I brushed my teeth every day, and I went to the dentist every 6 months. Then, I went thru a very messy divorce back in 2004, and I couldn't afford to go to the dentist for three years. So, I decided to start flossing and using mouthwash every day because I knew that I needed to take better care of my teeth while I was unable to go for my semi-annual cleanings. When I finally went back to the dentist after a 3 year hiatus, my dental hygienist was amazed that my teeth and gums were in BETTER shape than she had ever seen them. Flossing works! You still need to go for regular checkups and professional cleaning to remove tartar, but I can attest that flossing is the key to keeping your teeth for a lifetime.
