What happens with the wrist at the bottom of the swing? Are you supposed to rotate it to the side? If so, when did the rotation begin?

The hook ball is thrown the way it always has been, with the thumb approximately at ten to eleven o’clock and the fingers in the opposite region, about four to five o’clock. The one-handers do not have their fingers below the equator of the ball. The camera is too high to show what is really going on, and it only looks like the fingers are under the ball. Only a bowler who doesn’t use a thumb hole can release the ball with the fingers below the equator. Please watch what is happening here, instead of making assumptions based upon what everyone is saying. Open your eyes and see where the fingers and thumb are positioned when the ball actually leaves the hand. And put the camera six inches off the floor so you can see that the fingers are not beneath the equator. All that wristy stuff and the bent elbow occur before the release point. And bending the elbow will cause you to lose your true pendulum swing and muscle the ball. I’m not saying that it’s wrong to do things this way. Do whatever works for you. But stop spreading misinformation about bowling. For a one-hander using a thumb hole, the thumb must be around ten to eleven o’clock and the fingers opposite that at the release point. It’s always been that way, and it probably always will.

Unless you're some sort of freakish size there is absolutely no way your fingers are on the opposite side of the ball to your thumb.

@@lumberlikwidator8863 "The hook ball is thrown the way it always has been, with the thumb approximately at ten to eleven o'clock and the fingers in the opposite region, about four to five o'clock" For this to be possibly you would need to have a span of 10 to 11 inches, which would be hands the size of Shaquille O'Neal. Not really possibly for the average bowler. "The one-handers do not have their fingers below the equator of the ball" The equator is across the ball from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock, if, as suggested by you, the fingers should be at 4 to 5 o'clock then they are below the equator.

@@markhopkins318 I’ve drilled thousands of balls and the longest span ever was about six inches. You need to consider the laws of three dimensional geometry. The equator of the ball isn’t the same thing as using a clock as a way to describe the orientation of the fingers and thumb at release. A person can have his thumb at eleven o’clock and his fingers at five o’clock, and if his wrist is bent backwards then his fingers and thumb are all above the equator of the ball. The equator, which divides the upper and lower halves of the ball, is an imaginary line parallel to the floor that wraps around the entire circumference of the ball. I have a photo of Mark Roth in his prime, taken from the side just after his thumb has exited the hole, and his fingers are still in the ball, and his fingers are well above this imaginary line. The whole way this business about the fingers being under the equator of the ball has proliferated because people are filming slow motion releases with the camera well above the floor. That creates the illusion that the fingers are underneath the ball. They are not. There is no realistic combination of pitches that would allow a person with a ten inch span to release the ball if they were trying to use a thumb hole. Theoretically it could be done, but drill presses will not adjust that far from zero pitch. And even if you could drill those pitches, the edges of the holes would chip out almost immediately because of the extreme pitches. The only way someone with a ten inch span would be able to release the ball would be if they bowled without a thumb hole. For a right handed bowler a hook is still thrown with the thumb to the left of twelve o’clock and the fingers to the right of six o’clock. That is not the same as having your fingers under the equator of the ball. What happens prior to that may influence the bowler’s rev rate and the effectiveness of their shots, but it doesn’t change the immutable laws of physics. I’m not trying to bash you here. I’m just trying to teach people something and trying to debunk some myths about the so-called modern release. You are free to disagree with me but you can’t deny the laws of physics. Good day.
