When you said that some of us never had emotional intimacy or empathy modeled for us in our families, about a thousand light bulbs lit up in my brain. You absolutely nailed it. My family of origin has so many silent elephants in the room that there isn't any room for our true selves. They resent me because I'm trying to resolve severe emotional and physical trauma from my childhood, and they have no idea how to react to speaking truth to power. So they gaslight me. I'm trying to salvage things with my parents and siblings. (I'm the oldest and bore 90% of my parents wrath, so my siblings don't believe me when I tell them about the physical and emotional abuse that happened to me.) It's really, really bad, because now it involves how they treat my three children, especially my oldest son who I adopted 14 years ago at age 6, in comparison to how they treat my nieces and nephews. It breaks my heart for my kids, because its very obvious and very egregious. But I digress. I have a great relationship with my kids, overall and in terms of emotional intimacy and the ability to be truthful and vulnerable with each other without fear of judgment. I wanted to raise them in a way where, no matter whay happens, they never, ever doubt that they are infinitely, unconditionally loved, accepted, seen, heard, worthwhile, and *wanted*. My life partner of 14 years feels the same, and was raised in a very similar emotional situation to mine. Our kids actually talk to us about the good and bad in their life, openly and beautifully. It makes me so incredibly happy. However, my husband and I have a lot of trouble doing the same with each other. We've been dealt a really, really rough hand in life in every way, and we are strong because we survived it together. We still are. But we are no longer close or intimate. We both desperately want to fix that, but there are so many hurdles, physical and emotional, to overcome, that we're struggling with knowing where and how to heal. And I just now realized we are both mimicking the models we grew up with in order to cope. We are sweeping elephants under the rug. And there's no more room for them. Thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart clear up past the top, for this excellent guidance. You are awesome, and I deeply appreciate you. I finally feel like I have solid footing for a healthier start. I'm sharing this with my husband, too, because he's open to it. We both know we as people, and our relationship with each other, needs improvement and we can already talk about it, so it's a great start. Thank you, again. I have hope now, for the first time in a long time. P.S.- I did subscribe. I don't want to miss a bit of the kind and wise advice you're sharing. ❤

Hey Marilyn! Thank you for sharing your struggles and your journey toward healing. It's inspiring to see your commitment to breaking the cycle of emotional trauma for your children. It's also amazing that you and your life partner are open to improving your relationship. I wish you all the best. I love you. I mean it!

Congratulations on 200k! 🎉Here’s to the next 200k! ❤ This was a great discussion. I’ve done some good things in my life but those do not include marriage that made it. I listen to relationship podcasts because I want to be a better person. I’ve done a lot of personal work to be ready to show up for a good partner and vice versa. I’m in a new relationship and maybe this will go somewhere. At 63, I know it’s still possible, but I also love my solo time. I honestly don’t know. But I’m open. Dating and getting to know one another are hard things to navigate.

This episode is so good! I am still in the thick of therapy. We started July 19th of this year. It has helped us immensely. I strongly recommend it. We have learned so much about one another and more importantly about ourself. We have been together since 1987. We are high school sweethearts. We have been through a lot and had marriage counseling earlier in our marriage. It is critical for emotional intimacy. One adult child left home in Feb. Out other adult child is getting married and leaving next year. I am still feeling lost and trying to figure out who I am and what I want to do with my life since I was a stay at home mom who gave up her career because I felt called to. Great episode Chalene! ❤❤❤❤

Powerful episode. Really like the questions and great book selections! I have learned to “read the room” and not push. To be more patient as I’ve become older and not react right away. I am the more emotionally connected one, and the questions will help me draw more from my partner. Guilty of saying “how was your day”. Congratulations on reaching a goal!

Charlene, I greatly appreciate this video. I think this is such an important topic at any time of your marriage, but especially critical while you are raising your kids. We stay so buy caring for them that we tend to move us to bottom of priority list. I have read several of the books you recommended and they were super helpful and easy to understand. I agree with you that usually one of the couple is the one trying to improve the relationship and bring the other along. But no matter who starts the process the end result is worth it. Thank you for being so honest and candid with us. I did subscribe today, I have now watched several of your KZbin videos and learned a lot. Good luck growing your subscriptions. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for sharing this! It's completely understandable that past experiences can trigger frustration. Overcoming them might involve acknowledging your achievements, focus on self-confidence, self-reflection, and a growth mindset. Remind yourself of your strengths, establish boundaries with these people, and embrace constructive feedback while ignoring unwarranted criticism. You got this! 💪🏼
