As far as I know, the Betaprime 5504G Primer that he was using in the video is capable of bonding and sealing to bare metal. Usually when we get a rust spot on pinch welds, we grind off all the rust, clean the metal, then seal it with that Primer product to ensure the rust won’t be an issue anymore. It’s the same with any body work on metal parts of the body. If the rust isn’t dealt with, it’s going to keep creeping under the paint and corrode further through the metal and cause more problems down the road.

I’ve been in the business 25 years and watched this video in hopes he could show me an easier way to reinstall the two a-pillar moldings but we do it exactly the same way so I’m thinking there isn’t another way. The a-pillar moldings on this car or some of the worst designed in the business but that’s just the way it is. There are a few more details concerning the a-pillar moldings that had to be done before reinstalling them that were not shown in this video that make this car a real pain in the pooper. The rest of the windshield job is straightforward and simple. He did a great job and uses old school cold knife techniques like I do. Old school is still good. Well done!

Totally agree. I just got mine replaced professionally but the columns are a little loose towards the bottom, consequently The rubber gaskets are not pressed tight against the glass. Probably the plastic clips are broken or not holding properly. Anyway I am taking it back so they can fix it. Definitely it has to be a proper way to reinstall them.

The big plastic moldings on this car have a complicated clip system that attaches it to the body of the car and covers the edge of the windshield. Stupid design on this one. One of the worst.

GLB Productions I also agree. Just watching Rich illustrates to me that I need to find a new "glass guy". You can tell the quality is there. My windshield leaks in the driver's corner and you can easily look through the glass from the outside and see the path of water infiltration right through the sealer. Just remember don't bring a long knife to a caulk gun fight! That is some gun!

I work at a body shop and see this done almost daily. This guy knows his stuff. The only caveat I have about this install is the rust. It is very hard to stop and will eventually cause the windshield to leak and/or crack. There are a lot of hacks out there. But Eric has picked one of the good guys. Nice job!

Good job ! I have 40 years as an installer plus management. Good to see the old way of installing. I remember pushing with my head what a pain. When the eq came in the 90's it was the greatest thing to happen to save the body. I am 65 and still install well stop some day. Getting to craze with all teck in the glass now. I always loved my job and still do.

couple of time I had my windshield replaced. The installer said to me. For a proper cure, to turn on the defrost on heat. Is that a standard practice? It wasn't mentioned on this show.

It's funny the people trying to pick this install a part. Mr. Kiss installed the glass properly. I can assure you that you don't find many that will take some of the measures he took to do a great job. I have been doing it for 16 years of my 36 years of life. I've had no training other than someone showing me how to remove and replace the glass. They didn't fix scratches or rust, check body seams, or anything. Just cut it out and shoot a bead and stick it in. I had enough common sense to figure out bare metal will rust with water standing around the pinch weld for days after rain. I had to learn a lot of what Rich just showed you by trial and error. Any newer installers should be thankful for this video to teach them the proper way to do this job. If i had installed this glass, it would look almost exactly like the procedure rich used, step by step. I do a lot of wholesale glass replacement for car dealers and body shops. I'm pretty much the "cheap guy" they refer to in a lot of these videos. I really wish some of these shops wouldn't lump us into a category hacks just because of our price. Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it isn't done right. I know it happens with cheaper sbops but I see a lot of the so called "pros" $300 install that's not up to par as well. I also hear a lot of the KZbin guys talking about oem quality glass. I'm noticing most all windshields are made poorly now. I use pilkington glass as much as possible but sometimes a car dealer is not willing to pay enough to get it so I will use a cheaper Chinese glass as long as they know up front what they're getting. For the record, a lot of the glasses used by the manufacturers now are Chinese glasses. There really isn't a glass made that is superior to all others and I've used them all. Anyway, good job Rich. It's good to see someone else in this profession that takes pride in their work as do I. Good luck in the future.

How does FYG glass compare to Pilkington? I'm concern about the fit and thickness. An auto place mentioned PGW. How does PGW compare with the other 2 brands? Does it matter if the company is not AGSC certified? One company was Dinitrol certified. Is that equivalent to being AGSC certified?

Keeping it minor and unobvious is all you can do. My Tacoma had a windshield replacement before I got it, but they scraped most of the paint off as they removed the old sealer, and only put new sealer on the bare metal, about 6 years after I got it, it started all rusting out, I took out the windshield, scraped, sanded, wire brushed, then SAND BLASTED,every inch, to get the rust out of the pits, then 2 coats of epoxy primer, 2 coats of urethane primer, then 2 coats urethane top coat, waited 3 days Then installed a new windshield, To much work, so if there is nothing wrong with the old sealer, and no rust, leave it and do what Kiss did. Overall, this was a pretty good install. There are a few things I would recommend changing, but this is quality work! My ideas I offer would be: Invest in some quality suction cups. We use them, and it helps with the installation process of the job. You can grab the cups and not have to worry about the glass going anywhere, or getting your hands on the primed area. DOW has a primer that works on both glass and metal now. It's amazing stuff, and works wonders. They also have a urethane equivalent to Express called ONE. Which has the same set time, but adheres to aluminum better and doesn't interfere with radio signal if it's an issue. I would use paper towels instead of a rag to wipe pinch welds down, and a different towel to wipe the dash. And a 30 minute job is quite possible, if you have 2 people who are working on it at the same time. That's how our shop works, and we consistently get jobs done in 25-45 minutes. Some faster than others. Other than that, this was a pretty solid install, and I would love to work for this company if I was in the area.

I have been working for Auto Glass Now for 3 days so far and i love it. I have my moments where I get irritated but at the end of the day when im done. I leave knowing I did a great job. I liked the video, there aren't too many people who know what goes into windshield installation. There's always gonna be someone who knows everything about everything, like some of the commenters here. Sure, there's some things I may do differently, but we all have our own technique. Experience is the best teacher, and I can see that you have done many a shield. Unfortunately, in today's society, the focus is more on getting it done quick as you can, as opposed to a good quality, take your time, and do it right mentality. I've been doing shields just as long, and it was fun to watch this, because I do most of what you did the same way. And like you said, you can tell when it's been done poorly, it happens, and sometimes it makes your job a little more involved, and the people that say they know a guy who can get it done in a half hour, don't know jack about installing windshields, just sayin'

I was borrowing a friends 92 Mighty Max and a rock hit the windshield The Glassmen said the glass wasn't available so I found one in junkyard for 35 bucks and removed with piano wire trick. Asked Glassmen if they could install they said 200 clams just for labor. So I watched this video and ordered the supplies online and replaced windshield this morning, it went well and I saved a lot of dough. It took,me longer than it would have taken a pro but at least i didnt have to pay those pirates Thank you so much guys

One time at a rally i saw a civic that boke its winshield in the previous stage borrow an evo winshield from a friendly team (probably 6 - 8 inches wider than the stock civic windshield), they used something like 6 rolls of duct and gorilla tape and somehow got the safety inspectors to ok it... was a beautiful thing.

One thing not mentioned is that the W/S is an integral part of the structure of the vehicle and actually part of the SRS. When an airbag blows, the W/S has the job of remaining intact and deflecting the passenger bag towards the occupant. A good quality urethane is absolutely necessary.

***** Thanks for your comment. AGAIN. I had no idea. Somethings you have hear multiple times to learn them. Ya know. I've seen some movie crashes with great window installation and very poor installation. It definitely makes a difference in rollovers. Movies are not a great place to learn much, but some of the vehicles they crash are legitimate and not just props. Chuck Norris was big on that on his Texas Ranger show. Using the real items in the crashes. Sure for some spectacular crashes they'd use hidden ramps and things.

I see Safelite windshield replacement ads on TV every 5 minutes. They charge $350-450 to replace windshields. I take my cars to a place that charges $90 and it only takes them 20 minutes. Thanks for a great and informative video from you both I was using my friends 1992 Mitsubishi Mighty Max unfortunately I was driving on the highway and a stone from a dump truck hit the windshield completely cracking it I tried to get the windshield and glass companies we're telling me that this windshield wasn't available the two of them that did have the windshield wanted over $400 to do the job so I went to the junkyard and found a windshield for $35 I removed it using the piano wire trick and it worked like a charm I watch this video ordered all of the supplies I needed online and replace the windshield myself and it was easy thank you for helping me and others by making this video

The newer the vehicle, the more crucial *PROPER* glass installation is. The glass has become a structural element of vehicle design and improperly installed glass can be dangerous. The glass plays a major structural component of rollover protection (see roof crush tests). Glass quality is also as important as the installation. Cheap glass can be both visually and structurally inferior to OEM glass. I'm in the collision repair industry and this is no place for amateurs or hacks. Don't cheap out of this job, be careful about who you let replace your glass. Shopping by price out of Craigslist is not the place to be...

The best install I've seen. There is no repair I wince about having done more than the windshield other than the timing belt. The shop screwed up the last timing belt install and it wasn't any better after they replaced the tensioner pulley but charged me an additional $128 for the pulley. I should have gone to Honda. I'm not a hater but if you screw up for God's sake fix instead of blaming it on the customer.

Wow! Gotta say, I was considering replacing the w/s on my wife's 2001 Expedition myself. After watching this video I am glad I took it to Safelite. Normally I do all my own work on our family vehicles. I've got a three bay shop and tons of tools. In this one case though, I think it was a good decision to farm it out! Eric, please pass my compliments on to Rich and Kyle. True pros in my opinion.

overall I give him a 9 for good work ,priming his scratches and a uniform v bead, however a small amount of rust is an enormous problem! you can not simply prime over rust, that's like putting a bandaid on cancer! it needs to be sanded down to bare metal and then primed, otherwise the rust (cancer) is still decaying underneath the primer! and will eventually start leaking! this also effects the structural integrity of a vehicle and therefore would not meet ratings of a crash test or meet the manufacturers standards, the auto glass safety council ( the place that certifies auto glass technicians) would fail this Intallation!

yeah he broke the white ones off and didn't glue them back on so when he smacked them down you could see how loose they were, that car was definitely getting air nose from those loose trim pieces

Just for clarification... tempered glass is not designed to keep you from getting cut. It's designed to keep you from getting IMPALED! When you have large sheets of glass that are not tempered they can break off into very sharp, large, triangular pieces that could potentially impale an occupant. ANY glass will cut you, whether it's tempered or not.

i know of a windscreen that can be fitted by anyone, and can be done in 20 mins, land rover defender, why you might ask? because it uses a rubber seal and isn't bonded, downside? that rubber seal shouldn't be called a seal, it should be a called a sieve!

As a glass tech. I just want to say he did a good job but still did not do everything correctly. First was using the long knife to trim the excess urethane on the sides of the windshield before running the cold knife down it, although it does make it easier. It causes a deep gouge in the metal beneath it. Second was trimming the urethane before cleaning, you're supposed to clean the pinch welds before you trim the urethane. Which helps eliminate foreign chemicals which may cause adhesion problems. Third was the rust, the rust should have been cleaned down to bare metal, before being primed. Priming over the rust does not stop it. which will still eventually cause the windshield to leak. Speaking of the primer takes me to the fourth problem, which is the daubers he uses to apply the primer, 1 should only be used once and never dip twice into it. again causing cross-contamination what could ruin the primer. Now moving on to the "running of the urethane" you never want to seem in the middle of the glass at the top. you want to do one continuous bead when possible however you can't do it on every car. it is very easy. Less seems is less areas for possible leaks. Then using what's called a "pojo" you're supposed to smooth out your seams and make sure there are no gaps and or bubbles in the urethane before setting the glass. Other then that. Good job.

I can't afford to pay someone to replace my screen but I do have a spare one on another car that I can practice with, great video and all I need now is a glass removal kit and some good glue, in the UK there is a silicon branded RTV which says it is specifically for windscreens and is good up to 250C, looks like that's the best I can find for now. I took out my first windshield recently… was an original windshield from a 2006 Texas car. Went into it planning on using the wire method, but ran into literal snags because it was a completely smashed up hail dmg one. Ended up doing it with the cold knife/razor blade on the 17” stick; the razor blade was the real champ for an affordable price. Another tool I used was an oscillating tool with a “sealant blade”. It worked well for me on the a-pillars, but don’t recommend it for a beginner on a windshield that you don’t want to dmg. (Mine was smashed, and needed recycling.) + if can easily scratch paint if not controlled. Also had issues certain areas of a smashed windshield. Depending on the type of vehicle it can be difficult to use the cold knife shaped like an ; mine was a vw beetle, and the exterior trim is just painted metal without much room for the blade. Also the harbor freight cheap cold knife blade wasn’t long enough to cut through the adhesive all the way in some spots.
