Great Video!! I have tried to do the install myself a couple times and have unfortunately destroyed two N64 motherboards. Not recommended for a beginner definately!! Now I'm waiting for my newly ordered Flex cable replacement from Game-Tech US and new N64 console, but this time around I'm sending my console and kit to you guys at Retro Sales for the professional installation service!!!.

Great vid as always man! I just recently did my first n64 HDMI mod. It went off without a hitch. I do have to say, that my purchase of a microscope earlier in the year has paid for itself for mods like this. I find it makes doing this type of solder work A LOT easier. Also, by using the 30x i can get in nice and close to make sure that all my joints are solid and have no bridges. If I hadn't already watched Jason at Game-tech do his mod of this, I would have used yours as a tutorial for sure. Hey, your method for the famicom AV mod is what i use everytime. Keep up the great work bro! PS - if anyone is curious, I use an Amscope SW-3B13 stereo boom arm microscope for my work. with a 10x for solder work and a 30x for checking. It's not cheap, but if you do mods all the time, I recommend it for sure
@GlobalGarageAus

Yes I have to agree. A microscope for checking the work was invaluable. Yours is a top quality microscope! wow that's an investment. Mine is only a cheap one, but i does the job. If I was to buy a new one I would try this - amzn.to/2vqSNBj

Adam Socolofsky your mod will change depending on what board you have, but it’s only a small difference. It’s all in the guide when you mod though, so just refer to that to make sure you’re modding properly for your board version

No worries. It's a fairly straight forward process, but the pins are incredibly fine which makes it challenging. You could mess this install up very easily by bridging pins and not being able to remove the solder completely.

Watching your video just makes me want to do this myself. I would rather spend months learning how to soder than let someone touch my N64, my one and only. I would rather buy a broken N64 to test this out on. Should I just get someone else to do this for me? Am I just gonna end up screwing this up? Your instructions are just so clear I feel like I could do this, except I just read about accidentally bridging connections. I was looking for what to be careful with. Thanks for posting.

Aykut Ucar It’s very small and delicate soldering. You could give it a go but maybe practice soldering on a junk board first. Just practice soldering tiny wires to individual pins.

When playing Donkey Kong 64 on a 16:9 screen, go into the game's settings, and switch the game to 16:9 mode. Go into your monitor settings and set your monitor to "Anamorphic Widescreen", and BOOM. Some Nintendo 64 games are naturally 16:9, Banjo-Tooie is another prime example.

yeah playing old stuff on a modern display is janky, but if you got to do it, external scalers (as opposed to the shitty ones built-in to tvs for composite and s video ports) do a much better job at putting 240p and 480i signals on 1080p displays.

natr0n If Nintendo don't end up releasing an N64 Mini, then I'll be releasing mine anyway. ;) I designed a new motherboard which uses the original N64 chipset, but has an FPGA and SDRAM on the underside, so it can output HDMI, but also has an onboard "Flash" cart. imgur.com/a/UwR3Y The board is only 10cm square, and no PIF nor CIC chip is required, as it boots directly from the FPGA. The ESP module is used mainly for the higher-level control, and OSD menu / SD card stuff, but can also be used to easily mod controllers to connect them wirelessly.
@electronash
@electronash 7 жыл бұрын
natr0n The board still has headers for a real PIF / RGB DAC, or a proper cart slot. It's booting from an Everdrive atm, while I work on the HDMI output stuff. Then I'll finish the cart "emulation" from SDRAM, and hopefully find a nice mini case for it. Booting the N64 from the FPGA also means that it can be made truly region-free / universal, as soon as I implement the few extra CIC chip types. The most complex CIC chip is the x105 type of course, which is used for a handful of games, mostly from Rare. Almost all other games are simple enough to get running, as the FPGA just implements the proper CIC seed responses, like most emulators do.

Reggie Fils-Aimé Howdy. ;) Yep, it seems likely, but unless Nintendo themselves license / port their N64 emulator from Virtual Console, or by some miracle, actually do it properly, and release a custom ASIC / Gate Array for it, then I'm worried that the emulation won't be so great on certain games (like Goldeneye etc.) Nintendo don't really have many excuses to not just release a Gate Array version that is very similar to the iQue. It could then not only be a 100% compatible N64 "clone", but still keep the price down, and possibly add slightly higher rendering resolution etc. I strongly suspect it will just be yet another slightly boring but slightly more powerful Allwinner SoC though, which is why I wanted to build my own board that uses the real N64 chipset. ;) Hopefully, if they do match the rumours and actually release an N64 Classic, it will be fast enough (and / or the emulator good enough) to play ALL of the games without any annoying slow-down nor graphical / audible glitches. (Oh, and hopefully without the noticeable lag of the NES Classic, especially on the sound.)

I've done several of these mods myself now but I watched just to see if I could give any input. You didn't mention that the cartridge slot has longer brass-colored screws and that it just pops off once those are out. Try it! Lift both sides evenly though or you’ll break one of the “wings” that the screws go through. The reason to pry the heat sink and RF shield from the back is because the thermal pads can rip up the RDRAM chips in the other direction since almost all the legs holding them to the board are on the back side (very odd package that has almost all legs on a single side with no dummies). So weird that PAL DK64 isn't a banana yellow game pak like it is in North America. To avoid unwanted input on the game in the background you can use the D-pad without any buttons (after invoking with buttons, of course). Up/Down changes selection, Right will make/enter the selection, and Left will back up one level/cancel.

Matt Norton Huh? You’re absolutely right that anyone can buy directly. I’ve bought them straight from MarshallH/RetroActive many times... started in 2016 before GameTechUS ever showed interest. The only catch is that you have to buy three or more... and why wouldn’t you?! ;) Plenty of incentive to scrape the money together. What confuses me about your statement is that MarshallH has never sold them directly on the website to my knowledge. I always contact him when I’m ready to buy and he responds with a payment link for my specific order. If he has them on hand I get them in a week or three, otherwise I get them when the next batch arrives. Nothing to do with luck and timing. Were you just trying to get him to refresh the website constantly? ;) Sneaky!

Dude you hold the n64 controller like you've never used one in your life. Theres nthing wrong with the controller, its the users.

I haven't. I absolutely hate it! :) There's a reason that style of controller never made it mainstream, it's just not ergonomic. If you compare it to the PS1 dualshock controller at the same time you can see why it was killed off pretty fast.

Lacking the skill and precision required, I would just be happy to pay someone to do this, but some sellers on ebay are asking *£350.00 at least* for this job. That's way too much.... :(

abloogywoogywoo If you get your hands on the kit, I can install it for you

That's very kind of you. Problem is, I can't find the kit anywhere, everywhere has been sold out for months or there's a newsletter/waiting list thingy to sign up to. I think this is part of the problem Scrappy Kilmore highlighted. Out of curiosity, what are your prices?

I wonder how many N64 consoles are going to be ruined by novices attempting to install this kit?
@GlobalGarageAus
@GlobalGarageAus 7 жыл бұрын
Quite a few....This is why the seller doesn't sell to the general public as you can imagine the fallout when noobs ruin their motherboards. It's a tricky install for anyone really, I don't even like doing it.

Not at all, it is pulling digital video from the N64's gpu, and outputting it as HDMI.
