How to Install Waterproof Membrane Band and Corners

Sheet membrane, such as Schluter Kerdi can be difficult to install. It is almost like hanging wallpaper; air pockets and creases need to be avoided. By using a margin trowel and a 6" drywall taping knife, the process is made easier.

Nice install and as never used this brand before; it really does look a tad bit easier than kerdi et al; as you said Isaac, b/c the membrane doesn’t have that memory kerdi does, along w/ the the mil being little thicker than the others. Might not think would make huge difference on an install, but those DETAILS REALLY DO “MATTER”, and can be a huge advantage (& disadvantage as well depending on install) for your installs. Thx for sharing, and hoping I’ll get a chance to use this brand in the future. Already using FloFX “drains” and really like them (which your the one who showed us and was a nice upgrade from using say….kerdi 😉) & for a remodel, the FloFX kit is nice as everything need for basic install in the box👍🏻👍🏻 Have a good one, stay safe and be well my friend ✌🏻

I never understood this. The Thinset is not waterproof correct, so if water was to somehow get under the membrane band, would it not cause the bond between the backerboard and membrane to weaken, and eventually just separate? Would it not be more ideal to use the waterproofing membrane to adhere the membrane to the backerboard? Or am I missing something here?

Question…why not extend the wall sheet membrane past the lower joint to over lap the pan membrane and the preformed corner by a few inches, eliminating the need for the long edge seams? Has this been tried?

good question, I think yes you could do that but you would still need to apply the long edge seam so it doesn't save a step, plus he mentioned it's better to sheet membrane the pan the day before so that your not walking overtop to complete the rest of the work

So when you wrap the curb you use 2 strips of 6” each it don’t make sense use one with 10 inches wide ? You know you can make any size you want just cutting the roll with miter saw also is way cheaper doing that

I feel the opposite -- would be more comfortable with sheet membranes on the walls, not on the floor. You did that kerdi membrane test and showed that it actually absorbs water and wicks up. That's exactly what you don't want on the floor especially around the curb. I'd stick with the plastic membranes... Maybe this membrane is different than kerdi? But at least from the video, it still appears to have that fabric like consistentcy.

I would use a sheet membrane but apply a liquid waterproofing membrane over it. The problem with this method for a business is that it takes more time and TIME is money.

Why do the corners go on first? In terms of water shedding sequence, it seems the corners should go on last so any water can shed right over them and only then onto the long corner band vs the reverse and get trapped in the corner?

I had the same thought. If you follow the path of water and gravity, it would make more sense that the curb top is done first then the preformed corners. Otherwise the water has potential to run under the transition instead of over. Since it is all adhered it is a little less of a concern though.

build mine out of stacked 2" kerdi and thought that was plenty sturdy but curious if you had a problem with foam only. also what about atop the membrane as a added layer of thickness for glass mounting screws

I’m assuming you’re talking about the thinset mortar Issac used? Lots of different flavors that are really good in showers. Never would want to use mastic in a shower. That’s only for non-water applications. I know Issac is a big fan of multimax lite

@Leo When doing membrane, you need to mix the thinset a little looser(more water) to make it very easy to level out the trowel marks and expell all air. That is why it looks "too creamy"

solid foam with 1/2" cement board for strength. doing this method on my upcoming shower remodel. KBRS has a really slick curb with screw penetration sealing.

Depends on your shower. In a new shower but old uneven building I used Tile Redi base, Redgard over Wonderboard walls. Base perfectly level but I should have plumbed the walls better.
