A series that I like that has always introduced new main characters is Jojo's Bizarre adventure, every part of Jojo has a different main character than the last and none of them feel like replacements to each other

My gf hated ichiban but that's mostly because of the gameplay change. I personally loved it as the one playing the game, she'd watch me play them. The fact that he sees himself as an RPG hero and therefore it shapes his world to be like that is great. Where Kiryu is a serious brawler so it makes sense his world would be normal and beat em up. My favorite MC switch is kain and raziel. Although that may be cheating since we had a single game of Kain before soul reaver. I actually played blood omen after defiance so to me it was Raziel being the MC and then Kain joining in Defiance. Getting to see Kain as not just a villain but as something between a villain and an antihero.

I like twist(pun intended) in anime Gurren Lagann and it's impossible to talk about it without spoiling story. I think they made it more interesting because of that and they also changed overal tone of this anime from being very carefree to be more nuanced in the rest of the series.

Actually, I have some examples too: I’ll begin with Danganronpa, where every new game has new protagonist - in first game we have Makoto Naegi, who got into the elite school by his luck; in second one the protagonist is Hajime Hinata - a boy with an unknown talent; in Ultra Despair Girls protagonist is Komaru Naegi - Makoto’s sister, and in Danganronpa V3 there are two protagonists - Kaede Akamatsu & Shuichi Saihara. Next we’re going to Mortal Kombat: in first four games the protagonist was Liu Kang, but in fifth game, Deadly Alliance, he was killed. In that game the closest person to be the protagonist was Raiden. In sixth game, Deception, the protagonist was Shujinko, an old man, which his name really means “Protagonist” in Japanese. In Armageddon it was Taven, in MK 2011 Raiden was a protagonist once more, MKX introduced branch of “new generation” characters, who were the game’s protagonists, but from MK 11 the role of the protagonist returned to Liu Kang. One more example - Shadow Fight series. I don’t know about the first game, but in Shadow Fight 2 the main protagonist was a warrior named Shadow, who lost his body, when he opened the Gates of Shadows and released the demons. Eventually, he beats them all, defeats the main villain of the game named Titan, returns his body back and gets a girlfriend. However, in Shadow Fight 3, we have a new protagonist, who is the player’s character, while Shadow from the previous game is the game’s antagonist. After defeating him, we’ll encounter the REAL main villain of this game, who is the other half of the game’s protagonist (it’s complicated), and defeat him too. And my favourite example - Zero Escape series: in first game, 999, the protagonist is Junpei - an ordinary guy who got into the sinking ship with 8 more people, including his childhood friend Akane and a guy, who will die first. In second game, Virtue’s last reward, we have Sigma, who is the typical visual novel protagonist with no voice and face, while the other people, who stuck with him, can talk. However, the reason, why Sigma can’t talk and we can’t see his face will be revealed in the game’s true ending. And in Zero Time Dilemma there’re three protagonists - Carlos, Diana and Sean (the last name will be revealed in the end of this game). Moreover, in Zero Time Dilemma both Junpei and Sigma return (actually, Junpei was in the second game too, but you’ll find out about that later - you would not even know VLR is the sequel of 999) Resident Evil has multiple protagonists too: Jill and Chris from RE1, Rebecca and Barry, who were the side characters, but they got their own games too (Zero and Revelations 2), Leon and Claire, and, of course, Ethan Winters, who was a protagonist of the resent RE games (7 and Village)

Fighting games have to do this pretty often. Street Fighter has tried to do it a few times now and not really been successful. From 3 onwards each game tends to have a new Main Character. Alex in 3 is an odd case. I don’t think anyone really hates him or his game but when it came out not many knew it was even Street Fighter 3. Partly because of the arcade cabinet and partly because it only had Ryu and Ken. SF4 had Abel as the new protagonist who I’m sure has his fans but never took off. And 5 had Rashid who is the protagonist of the story but it’s really more of an ensemble of characters that it focuses on. Meanwhile SF6 has Luke front and center as the main character. Which he seems to be doing well because he was introduced earlier as a dlc character for 5 and has been met with mostly positive reception no doubt thanks to his voice actor hyping up the character and engaging with the fanbase. SNK are no strangers to new protagonist either. Their biggest fighting game series The King of Fights was a big crossover of their multiple series into one game. With an original character, Kyo and his friends filling the role of protagonists. But each arc would introduce new threats and new characters to take the lead while never replacing the old ones, at least not for long. Starting with K’(pronounced K Dash) as the new hero of the second saga. Then for the third saga they introduced Ash Crimson who was the new hero and the mysterious villain of the story. It’s very complicated and Ash is probably the most divisive of the heroes. And they have Shun'ei as the new hero of the current arc. They also have their Fatal Fury series that pulled off a new protagonist the best of any of these. They tried to replace the hero Terry Bogard before but it wouldn’t stick until they introduced Rock Howard. He wasn’t only Terry’s protégé he’s the son of the original main villain and Terry’s arch nemesis. Rock was a big hit among fans and while his big game was the last before the series went dormant it’s getting a new entry next year.

@@DanPankrat Nope it’s Abel. He has a huge connection with Seth, and the plot as a whole. And works closely with Guile and Chun Li.
