Could have sworn you do not connect both terminals directly to both cars…… what happened to the old tip of connecting one of those ground wires to a bolt or screw on the vehicle…….

Correct, you are supposed to connect the black cable to bare metal on the vehicle being jumpstarted.

Yeah I've never done it that way never had an explosion but you're right it is safer.
