Excellent instructions. I did try years ago with my custom 1200 HD sportster , try to jump off a running car. Not a good outcome, it cost me hundreds to have it fixed. Your channel is great and I subscribe now. Thanks for the tips.

I was always under the impression, that you install the positive first, and then the negative on a grounded body part away from the battery, this is done so that sparks will not ignite the gases that may come out of the battery, and after you have jumped it you take the negative off first therefore breaking the circuit, And then the positive off the battery so there will be no sparks again to ignite any gases that might be coming from the battery that is what I was always taught, I understand with the battery box you can turn the power off to the cables before attaching, this should prevent sparks and an explosion, just my two cents

I suggest you always connect the positive first, then the negative and remove in the opposite way. Remove negative first then positive. The reason is that when it sparks (it will spark either way) the spark goes to ground without passing through the electrical system of the bike or the battery. Remember, electricity always finds it way back to negative (ground). By placing the positive on last, the spark chases through the system to ground.

I was going to point this out too, but it’s also because sparks can actually catch a battery on fire as well, the gasses they emit are flammable. Keeping the sparks away from the battery is the main issue.

I have one too and yes you can def use it but the clamp leads are so short you’d never reach the rear foot peg to connect the ground there.

I don't think You can, jump starters are only for starting not for charging, so when You're charging you have to connect a trickle charge directly onto the Battery & plug it into the power point on the wall of Your house.

my softail slim positive is covered with plastic and its hard to locate. is it ok if i just connect my portable positive jump starter to the starter itself?

On my 2017 tri glide had jump positive on starter ground on transmission bolt started right up

You could try replacing just one bolt with one metal bolt that's not chromed.

You connect negative last,otherwise your positive lead is live,any metal it touches it will spark/short..

When you connect, you connect positive first and negative last, so you’re correct. But when you disconnect, you disconnect negative first and positive last, that’s why he’s wrong explaining disconnection.

You can just connect the positive to your starter and ground to wherever, and it will also start the same way. no need to remove the seat.

That all depends on the Bike that You've got, I own a 2015 Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic & just like all Softail models, it has a Horseshoe shaped oil tank, the Battery sits in a little Battery recess which is built into the back of the inside of the oil tank & then it's all covered with the seat, the starter motor sits underneath the oil tank, there's less than a 1/2 inch gap between the bottom of the oil tank & the primary case so it,'s just about impossible to get Your fingers in there, let alone Your whole hand or any jumper leads, so it looks like Softail owners are stuck with always having to take the seat off to get to the Battery to put the jumper leads on.

Same problem for Us Softail owners too so it looks like, just like Us, you're stuck with always having to take the seat off & connect the jumper leads straight onto the Battery & I think if You're charging the Battery You'll have to connect the trickle charger directly onto the Battery anyway, jump starters are only for starting, I don't think they can be used for charging.

Edgar Sanchez He meant that the car should be on but its motor should not be running. Same as you might be parked somewhere and turn the switch on to roll up the car windows. Leave the switch in the on position without starting the car’s engine. This way the car’s alternator is not generating any power that might overkill the bike’s electrical system.

The battery has voltage in it whether the car is on or off. If the car is on, its alternator puts out too much amperage for the motorcycle's system to handle and it can cause damage to the bike.
