Very helpful..thank you. I have 2 avocados that are doing pretty good and I was wondering when to plant in the ground. Now I know I need to wait about 2 more years. One is about 6mos and the other is about 4. I grew them from seeds😊

I live in central Texas where it tends to get cold enough especially now where we can get snow but it's uncommon, so I brought my seedlings inside and bought them grow lamps. I'm looking to buy them their own pots since I didn't expect 3 out of the 4 seeds to make it and I'm doing more research to help them further along. I own another type "tree" in my collection as well the Madagascar Palm which also likes my climate

I live in Canada. I threw avocado pots and skins into my compost bin last winter. We tried to plant two in pots and it never grew. The following summer they sprouted. I'm like is this a weed? I dug it out and saw it was attached to the avocado seed!! Two grew in pots one was shallow one was deep and another in the ground where I dumped my compost worms for the winter. Last winter we had no snow. Its colder this year so I'll see how they do. We get heavy rain here so im curious to see how they do this year !

Hi Scott, great video, I feel growing avocados is a challenge of it's own, mine are all indoors, and like you said in the winter they do just fine. Someday I hope to have a sun porch that I can put mine out in a sunny location even better than it's in now, although my three year old avocado seems to be quite happy where I have her and is actually growing some branches which is quite interesting. I still have two others and gave one of my fuller ones to my daughter cause she found it interesting that I could grow an avocado from a seed. Thanks again for the useful information and as always so good to see you. Take care and stay safe, sending love and hugs, bye for now.

Think they were always cold tolerant. They were grown in the mountains of Central Mexico. Which because of elevation is very different from the tropical lowlands. If the Incas also grew them the Andes were even colder in spite of being right on the equator.

Hi Scott great video, I live in a zone with similar conditions to yours (40°C in summer, 0° in winter), Would you recommend to keep my avocado in a pot for some years before putting it into to the ground? That way I could take care of it from extreme weather conditions? My avocado is just 1 year old now, We are in summer here and even if I water it leaves are pointing down in ~30°C days, so I move it to the shade and they recover, Maybe I'll keep in indoors in winter colder days I don't want it to be over stressed but I would like it to start preparing for transplanting into the ground some day

Hi Scott, would you recommend grow lights/lamps for avocados in winter or growing them indoors? If so what kind of grow light? :o
@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree4 жыл бұрын
Great question, Tim! If you don't have enough natural light, looking into a grow light may be beneficial. I currently have one avocado tree growing under LED grow lights and it's doing reasonably well. I'm afraid I don't have too much more to offer as it's still something I'm learning about! All the best :)

I live in Michigan USA, it's not unusual to get 4 months of 10-20°F days with snow! Our main problem is sunlight. How easy are avocados to keep indoors? Will they actually produce fruit?
@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree2 жыл бұрын
Avocados need a fair amount of light - especially if they are to mature and bear fruit. The question of 'will they produce fruit' is one which requires more detail and I'm going to be publishing a video in the near future detailing the requirements. But the short answer is - I don't know of any indoor trees that fruit, but that doesn't mean it's not possible!

Hi Scott, I am currently struggling with my 1 1/2 year old sapling this winter (in Kansas, USA) that I keep indoors. I can't seem to keep any leaves on it and they die either as they're growing or soon after they fully develop. I thought they were getting too much sun at first and getting sunburned but moving it to more indirect light hasn't helped the problem. Do you have any ideas as to what might be causing it?
@farmgrl Жыл бұрын
Did you get help on this? How have they transformed two years down the line?
@jl8858 Жыл бұрын
@@farmgrl unfortunately not. I tried with another pit and got it to grow to a similar height as the first one bur it died in mid winter here like the last one. I think the problem is either the light from my windows and grow light aren't sufficient enough or the temperature fluctuates too much during the night.
@farmgrl Жыл бұрын
@@jl8858 too bad. I was looking forward to a positive outcome but its okay. Do you grow other fruit trees there with that climate?
@jl8858 Жыл бұрын
@@farmgrl yeah I was hoping for the opposite as well. I currently have a peach tree sapling that's about 1' tall. I am growing that from a kernel and so far its doing well. It's only 4 months old so it's hard to say if it'll last in the long run. Peach trees can grow and thrive outside here in KS so I'm more hopeful about this one than the avocado tree

Scott, I transplanted my avocado from a Ziploc to the toothpick method, but I didn't wash it before and it was in the Ziploc for too long making it have a lot of algae. I did some research and it mainly said wash it with alcohol. What should I do?
@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree4 жыл бұрын
Hey Kalvin, thanks for your comment. Hmmmm - I haven't heard that suggestions. I generally just run my seeds under [cold] water to rid them of any algae, I'm not entirely sure if the alcohol would just kill of the algae or if it would also damage the roots of your tree - I might have to have an experiment with this at some point. Good luck, whatever you do!

Scott my avocado seeds are slowly turning black even tho i havent planted them yet what should i do also they have cuts on the sides by accident
@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree4 жыл бұрын
Oh no! There could be a couple of reasons - if it's getting too hot, it'll be a problem. If it's been in the water too long and it's not getting the nutrients it needs, it'll have a problem. If it's been let to dry out, it'll probably die. If you're in the Northern Hemisphere, experiencing summer at the moment, I would consider that perhaps it's getting too hot. Take it out of the direct sun and I expect that if the damage isn't too bad, it'll pull through. Good luck!
