How to Kill a Ballast Flora - Barotrauma Guide

In this short video, I demonstrate an easy way to kill a ballast flora. If you're wondering why we disconnect the power first, it's for preventing ballast flora from controlling it. If you don't disconnect it flora might flood the ballast and shut the door to trap you inside. Most people in you submarine might not know what ballast flora even is so after learning how to deal with it, go ahead and show your submarine crew how to deal with it too ^^

There is a faster method that involves already putting 2 explosive charges with frag grenades connected to a button that detonates them. It almost doesn't harm hull, exceptionally when it's upgraded and will prove useful if you have to face enemies at the same time too. You may as well just disable ballast pumps by wiring their toggle_state to your navigation terminal as ballast flora only infects if pumps are pumping IN. There is a 5% chance every second this happens.

I know about tossing grenades method but never thought of exploding them at the same time pretty neat trick. And disabling ballast pumps from navigation terminal before getting infected is just a genius idea. Didn't even know you could do that. This video is more for beginners that are totally clueless when their sub gets infected with ballast flora. I appreciate the advanced tricks though very helpful.

We got to a station then delt with it by cutting through our hull into the ballast where we safely cut it from outide

That's a really original way of dealing with it. Most of the time we get rid of the ballast flora ASAP because ballast flora makes repairs really hard since it will burn you if you accidentally burn it with a welder

I remember at some point when I entered the first gate, ballast flora grew inside my ship. Despite me doing this method, I either was impatient or ballast flora also seeps into power once it reaches the rest of the submarine (as it was already infecting my fabricator/deconstructor area). A friend thought that maybe it not only fed on water, but also electricity. So after I turned off the reactor, it eventually went gray and became removable. Good and concise video though! Not often do I see someone recommending a less explosive method on removing ballast flora.

Thank you ^^ I've never heard of it feeding off the electricity. We usually remove the flora before it gets too big so maybe that might be the case need to test that further though.

@@Dranka_ according to the wiki, the flora consumes electricity to speed up it's growth, which also puts a heavy strain on your power network. Draining the water just makes it easier to kill it, as it has damage reduction while in water.

The part when you just sit there and burn it while it's totally helpless is hell of a enjoyment. and magically, I somehow manage to learn this myself while playing. Still, it's enjoying to watch other people burn it down :D

It's pretty cool that you learnt it on your own. When I first encountered a ballast flora, I died and our medic had to carry me out with the "fireman's carry" talent xd

Meanwhile.. Me and the bois: "more fire!!! get the plasmacutters and flamthrowers, bring extra 02 tanks!!" 15 minutes later: the Cpt finally steps in and throws a frag and kills the Flora , and the crew. Love playing this game without using the Wikia 10/10

A couple tips: Plasma Cutter kills it faster Fire (grenades, flamer, steamer, etc) kills it MUCH faster Consider wiring a "ballast flora" button that automatically drains the ballast and then cuts the power. All you need is a couple of components and a little bit of know-how, and you can make a button for each individual ballast. Using a button is much safer and makes sure that anybody can take care of the flora without getting zapped or needing to know how the wiring works (edit: Bonus: wire a detonator with an explosive on a delay to the button to instantly kill the flora at a little cost to the hull, or no cost at all if you use an incendiary grenade!)

OR my way is to set the ship to climb to empty the ballast fast, throw an incendiary grenade in there, wait 1 minute to be perfectly cooked, and then fill with water, and voila ! :'D

As i remember when it was just added in game ballast flora did not took damage from welder or cutter, so the only cure from it was fire - flamethrower or incendiary grenade does worked. Or, maybe, we just somehow managed to didnt notice they do damage to flora, quite not sure here.. But anyway removing flora with fire, minded that this is the only cure - no matter was it true or not - was way more fun quest than today's just press LMB for 30 secs and its gone completely, today ballast flora cant do any challenge to our crew at all, ever.

No no no, you're doing it wrong, use a nuclear depth charge. It deals 1000 damage and there's no need to rewire. (Yes, its a viable strategy check the wiki)

According to the wiki a nuclear depth charge inflicts the most damage to the flora but it says "These probably shouldn't be used." so it's probably safe to use 💀

@@Dranka_ unfortunally, it was too late for the Dugongo... While i was trying figure out what is that thing, it already spread across almost every session of the Dugongo. At the end, one Moloch just showed up and open a massive hole at the bottom of the ship and we all died lol. At least, now i have the necessary knowledge to avoid this scenario again! Thx again :)

Thank you for the advice I needed to save my single player campaign. My mechanic and medic just kept standing in the poison cloud, staring off into the distance as they suffocated and didn't help fight the ship herpes :/

ya chuck in some c4 and a frag to set it off and if it has not grown it will be cleaned like nothing IF your balist is not HUGE like a few ships have, OH and be carful think balists are a pain to clean and even set the explosive but if in dout flame thrower it out, but i have rarly seen the flora because we avoid their swarms like the pleage, hell we rather deal with the endworm than flora :P. and as a medic if i dont got meds to in husk a man, i just go to my locker, get a case out, and grab my personal security and flatline the infected, but if you spread it ya getting flat lined and gibbed out of the ship, because i dont trust most sec for how agressive the ones i have been with are. oh and speaking on husks i was on a failed dive team, we ALL got infected, but i now can dive in peace for im experinced enough for it, but at the time i realised im infected and it was taking to long for the medic to help us and i was muted from the parasite so i just did what i knew i could and because i was not yet in the tail of infection i jumped ship and silently went POP naked :P in a public crew of over 10ish I fuckign went pop in the void and NO ONE knew.

someone tell me where the fuck did those ballast plants came from?? i know it came from the water pumps but i mean somewhere else. if i would've found info on the wiki it be real helpful. i got arrested for blowing the water pump with a grenade. but hey no one was hurt except damaging the assets. half of my crew died from that plant since they reported a new problem. so i was gonna check it out was confused like "wtf are you talking about??" one of em died so i was like..checked i thought they were making this up.

You get ballast flora from outside the submarine. There'll be faintly visible blue dots in the radar and if you're taking in water when you see the dots, there's a chance that you'll get ballast flora. You can try to avoid this by making a button to disable taking in water and pushing that when you see the blue dots or you can get rid of it after. Grenades are a really good solution for tha ballast flora though, no fuss needed just throw it and be done.

I don't think it will work. As long as there's power on the pump, ballast flora can control it. The button however is good for preventing the flora infection in the first place. If you're not pumping in water you cannot get infected with ballast flora.

im looking for how to wire up a ballast so that you can toggle it to drain and turn off with a switch ive seen the setup on a player made sub called Wraith but i cant set it up right unles i have it side by side

I'm not familiar with that wiring but I think it's to fight the flora after you get it. There's a method I talk about in my 7 more unknown facts video. You basically make a button to stop the pumps when you see flora in the radar and you avoid it entirely but obviously you can only move horizantally when you press the button.

Yeah you should use a diving suit or a mechanics jumpsuit to have burn projection or you can have some meds on you either will work

We have to pull the wires out because if we don't do that, ballast flora will flood the ballast and shut the hatch to protect itself. When we disconnect the pump however it can't control the pump because there's no power going to it.

Yep, flamer is a good option it might start a fire but if you close the ballast the fire will go out from lack of oxygen. I used a welder in the video because everyone will have a welder but not always they'll have flame thrower.
