I‘ve now completed my very first beanie! I cast on 100 stitches, knitted 52 rows of 1x1 ribbing and after that, started decreasing. I switched to double pointed needles after the third decrease row. I do recommend taking the initial stitch marker out when decreasing but I put 1 (in total 4) stitch markers in between the ssk and k2tog, that just makes it easier. I find the beanie to be a bit short for my liking, I will do 60 rows of rib next time and maybe cast on 120 for a looser fit. I ended up not using all 50 grams of worsted weight. All in all a really good-looking beanie and great tutorial, thanks! I like all of your diy apparel.

For anyone who's dumb like me and had to undo the hat several times while following the written pattern instead of the video, I wrote it out to be idiot proof :') -Cast on 100 sts onto a 16" 4mm circular needle with worsted weight yarn -knit 7 inches in k1p1 ribbing -knit 21 (in k1p1 ribbing!) ,k2tog, ssk, repeat until end of row -knit20 (in k1p1 ribbing!), k2tog, ssk, repeat until end of row knit 19, k2tog, ssk, etc...for this part just play it by eye -once it gets tight, switch to 4 4mm double pointed needles -When you can't decrease anymore (10 st) cut your yarn and pull the end through the remaining stitches, tie off the tail on the inside and weave in all ends.

What do you mean by “repeat until end of row?” Do you mean k1p1 for 21 stitches, and do a k2tog for the 22 and 23 stitches, then ssk for the 24th and 25th, then stitch 21 k1p1, then k2tog 22 & 23, then ssk 24 and 25? Are y’all using stitch markers? I feel like that helps but I’m just making sure I get the count right. :-)

It's good to have someone continental on KZbin. Usually, when I watch knitting tutorials, I only see people do the English method. I knit continental because I learned how to crochet before I learned how to knit and because I got so used to holding the yarn in my left hand rather than the right, I learned how to knit continental.
@Corduroykidd
@Corduroykidd 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I learned first with my right hand because I didn't know you could use your left hand. Then I learned to crochet and got used to it in my left hand and made the switch just like you. It's always good to know both though.

Yeah. I agree. I actually use the English method when I strand colors in the middle of a row because I find my tension is much looser but when I'm knitting regular colors or striping two colors I knit continental.

Is it counted in the next decrease row 19 stitches or do I just slip it? Or is it just a random stitch that I knit and doesn’t count towards any of the sections?

I am wondering if for the addition of 4 stitches to the original 100 how I would scale that if I’ve increased the pattern for a 2” larger head size or if I would just add another 4 to my 116 count. Thanks again for posting this amazing pattern ! 😊

Hi, you wouldn't need to add extra stitches :) 116-5x4 (20) =96/4=24. So your first decrease round would be rib 24, k2tog, purl 1, ssk. Hope that makes sense.

Okay, so, let’s talk about this purl stitch in the middle of the decrease in the updated pattern. Do we need this? What does it do? And if we didn’t add the purl, each decrease would only take 4 stitches, right? So we’d need to subtract 16 instead of 20 to get the decrease frequency for four corners. Right? But I’m getting close to my first decrease round and I’m not sure how to proceed. To purl or not to purl?? Please advise. THANK YOU! Your chill demeanor makes me feel so empowered to do this hat. 🖤

I always meant to add the purl because the hat in the thumbnail had it, but when I went to film the video I accidentally got confused and skipped it. It's all preference but I like the purl because I feel like it gives each decrease corner a direct straight line which I like the look of. I'm glad I give off a chill demeanor :)

@@kungfu740 I don't feel that remaking the video would be any more helpful. It's exactly the same, just with a purl thrown in. Did you cast on 104 Sts? You need the extra 4 sts if you're doing the middle purls. And yes what you described above is correct. The numbers with go down by 2 every round with an extra st at the beginning. You can move your stitch marker over one each round if that is less confusing. 21, 19, 17, 15, etc. Dm me on Insta if you need further help.

I've just completed a beanie using this pattern and I love it, thank you so much!! I started with 104 stitches as well and just wanted to let you know that it's actually 22 stitches in the first row of the decrease, not 21 as you wrote in the new pattern (I just thought maybe you'd want to correct it). But otherwise it's perfect I really appreciate it:)
@Corduroykidd
@Corduroykidd 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, the revised pattern actually has a purl inbetween the decreases and so 21 is correct for 104 sts. 5 sts per corner x 4 =20. 104-20/4= 21. Glad you made it work for you though.

@amyjayne6950
@amyjayne6950 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! So, you'd have to do a swatch to see how many stitches you have across 10cm/4 inches. Then, depending on the hat size you want, you'd multiply the amount of stitches you have for 4 inches by the amount of inches you actually need. e.g. the pattern calls for 20st across 27 rows for 10x10cm, but your yarn needs 35st across 10cm, so you'd multiply your 35st by 5 for a 20 inch hat. You see what I mean? It's maths! (and I do hate maths). It's entirely doable, you'll just need a bit more yarn and a lot of patience! Your decreases should work the same, too. Goodluck!

Gauge is 6.25 stitches to the inch in ribbing and 7.5 rows per inch. The pattern is in done in multiples of 8. Because of the ribbing you'd take your head measurement minus 4 inches and multiply by gauge and then choose the closest multiple of 8.

@Corduroykidd

You've done it right :) For some reason the math adds an extra st to the start of every row. So even tho the number of sts for each row goes down by 2 there will be an extra st at the start. Thats why I just take the marker out and knit by eye.

I love this model !! But I have a few questions because I'm not a brilliant beginner hahaha. I cast on 114 stitches and now I don't know how to divide by 4 because it's odd, how many stitches do I have to work before k2tog and ssk? And than in the second round? In addition I would like the total length (including decrease) is 9 inches, how many inches should I work before decreasing? Thank you so much in advance❤️❤️
@Corduroykidd
@Corduroykidd 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, can I ask why you cast on 114 sts? The pattern only works with multiples of four or eight. You could do 108 or 112. For the first round of decrease 8 sts are decreased which equals 16 sts total in that first round so, 112-16=96/4=24. So the first decrease round you would work 24 sts between each "corner" of decreases. Also my hat was around 8 inches long in total, so if you want a 9 inch hat just knit 8 inches of ribbing instead of 7 like I did. so Hope that helps and makes sense. Good luck :)

@Corduroykidd
@Corduroykidd Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the confusion. You should have 100 or 104 Sts depending on which version of the pattern you're following. I joined the round by knitting the first stitch with both strands of yarn, so it looks like two stitches but it's not. It's a single stitch. That's what I was talking about when I said knit them together as one stitch. Your stitch count shouldn't change until the decrease rounds.

Nope. The final rounds are all decrease rounds. I do that on all my hats. If you added a round of k1p1 in-between each decrease round the top of the hat wouldn't be flat. You'd get a pointy dome shape. If you were decreasing more than 8 sts per round maybe you'd do that, but not for this pattern.

Each decrease point takes 4 stitches decreasing 2 at each point. On the next round after the extra 1 stitch you should knit 19 and be back at the first decrease again. I’m so confused on the decreasing part. Are you separating your decreases into 4 even parts, as in 4 sections of equal number stitches for the knit 2 together and then the slip slip stitch or just kind of winging it? I am new to knitting and have only knitted one hat before and it was a decrease only every other row. Once we get to decreasing, is it a decrease every single row? Do you use stitch markers to break up your four sections?
@TCherice

Also, you said you tried to get one of the decreases on each DP needle. Am I wrong or doesn’t it matter where you are putting your decreases? I’m just confused overall. :-(
@Corduroykidd
@Corduroykidd 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the decrease points are divided by 4 equal sections as laid out in the description. It's 100 sts divided by 4 is 25 minus the 4 sts of the first decrease round is 21 sts. Of course you can use markers if you want to, that might make it easier for you. I'm just used to recognising it with my eyes. Also yes you decrease every round until the top of the hat closes. I try my best to get a decrease on each dp needle, but you'll have to move stitches around because it's not perfect. Just try your best :) Hope that all makes sense.

There are 4 decreases at the top of the hat so you'll knit 21, then do the 4 stitch decrease and then knit another 21 sts and do it a total of four times for that round. Then the next round is the same except you knit two stitches less between each decrease, 19, 17, etc. If you're using a stitch marker there is one extra stitch at the beginning of every decreases row except for the first one.
