What’s the best ebike? How fast can a 1,000 watt ebike go? Here I go over the top speed of different e-bikes compared to their watts.
Battery volts and controller amps play a role in ebike top speed, however hub motor watts is the main source of power.
In this video we compare different power levels to see how fast a 750 watt, 1,000 watt, 2,000 watt, 5,000 watt, and 8,000 watt ebike can go.
750w e-bikes are compliant with most local laws and have a top speed of 28mph making them a class 3 ebike.
1,000 watt e bike such as the 52 volt Ariel rider X class can max out around 35mph.
2,000 watt e-bike like my 72 volt ebike conversion kit have a max speed of 42mph.
3,000 watt hub motors are approaching electric motorcycle speed with a top end of 50mph.
5,000 watt hub motors can reach a speed of 60mph

The idea of this video is good, and the watt vs speed give a good approximation of top speed. However, the info is not correct. A 1500Watt motor is/should be rated for 1500 w continuously, but it will easily provide 5000 watts wheel power if you feed it 8000 watts of battery power. Also, a ‘5000 watt’ hub motor can be more efficient at lower speeds (say 35 mph) than a 1500 watt hub motor. The motor size mainly determines the maximum heat (watts) it can shed and the maximum amount of copper fill that will fit in the motor. So a big motor can be just as efficient and slow as a slow motor, if you feed it less power. It is heavier though, so indeed you should consider the power and amps and top speed that you want, and choose motor, turn count, battery, bms and controller accordingly. Everything should be in balance, although it is always nice to have some spare capacity in your battery, bms and controller. Then you could always increase the power if you want to…

Just because you can't afford the 40 to 56 amp hour 72v battery doesn't mean the 8000w and up Ebike kit or components are overkill. It's honestly what everyone wants subconsciously. That's why I'll have one in 2 months.

I built a 72 V e bike with Crystalite hub drive speed motor on a KHS mountain bike. I bought the hub, battery and controller as a kit from HPC. The battery goes in a bag with the controller bolted on to it. It has no peddle assist, only throttle. The disk brakes it came with were inadaquate for a heavy bike like this, so I put on Shimano hydraulic brakes. This was a good idea because the stock brakes were really weak. I also replaced the front derailleur with a single chain ring since I only peddle at slow speeds and rely on the throttle most of the time. The top speed is over 40 mph. I think I got it up to 45 mph once, but I usually ride at 20-25 mph.

Exactly you have to ride the e-bike differently which includes talking trail and paths. Doing 50mph all the time in a long stretch of road is not recommended because it eats through battery like juice. I take the road only when I need to. If there’s a bike lane then it’s a good excuse to slow down a bit. If there’s a path or trail I’ll definitely take that as well. All of that is for nothing than preserve as much battery as possible. Unless you can afford a 72v with like 200+ ah battery. Then you can throttle all day log

The people who get any motor under 1,000 are maybe not knowledgeable about what they’re getting at first, eager just to have a Ebike, eager but have buyers regret cause now they should’ve waited to get more money for a better motor, or just don’t make enough money and that’s all they can afford. I’m more for the 5k and up but of course I don’t need to go real fast but it’s nice to have that extra power when needed. I typically like to try to research and educate myself on what I can do I only need to maybe buy things once and if anything upgrades then all I need to do is buy that part to add on or replace it. Not knowing what your buying is what gets people cause they don’t realize this. Just like buying a car, appliances, etc. people just use it and don’t know how to maintain or the best money for their buck. It’s a tiring process considering every company thinks they are #1 and even if they know they aren’t they have to sell themselves to the masses to convince us they are which is the marketing hype. But the sad truth at times is when a new company actually gets popular sometimes that they still buying inexpensive stuff that breaks down but the product looks good on the outside.

I wouldn't fret too much on your first build not being ideal. I went through 2 iterations to get a bike I like. Although I started with a folding bike ebike I got for 400 bucks, then decided to build my own. I ended up using Grin Technologies GMAC 8T with Phaserunner controller and paired that with a 72v system. Your speed estimates are kind of misleading, your max reachable speed can be extended by using flux field weakening while sacrificing range.

very! a 48v 1000w motor system will only get you to about 20/25mph with a range of about 20/25 miles. a 48v 1500w system will get you to about 35/40mph with a range of about 30/35. slight increase in both range and speed but I'd say it's definitely worth the extra little bit you spend on getting higher speeds and longer range! @doktormerlin
@doktormerlin 2 жыл бұрын
The difference is mainly torque and a bit of heat. Motors with higher voltage can deliver more torque, which feels more powerful especially when accelerating. A 48V motor can spin faster but as soon as you sit on it its slower. Also since 2000W with 48V means more amperage than with 72V, the wires get considerably warmer, which limits the time you can go full power before overheating

Rider weight and bicycle wheel size are a big factor in ebikes under 5000w. If you had a 2000w(3200w peak) motor and a 20 inch wheel bike with a 300 lbs rider max speed would be about 32 mph. If you had 29 inch wheel bike and a 150 lbs rider max speed would be 48-50 mph. So with me (300 lbs) and 40 lbs battery on a 29 inch bike I am guessing it will top out at about 41-43 mph. In fact, 750 watts is not a _technical_ legal limit -- it's the e-bike legal limit, end of story. I have no issue with people building more powerful e-bikes as long as they realize they're eventually going to get caught riding them over the speed limit on a bike path or greenway. You don't seem to ever pedal that thing, so calling it an e-bike is a bit of a stretch.
