It's.. literally in the name. Penta coming from the Greek word for five, tonic coming from tone, ergo five tones, or five notes.

The 2 biggest things that "unlocked" the neck to me were: learning the 5 positions of the minor pentatonic, and that the major pentatonic was the same shapes, just 3 frets back. From there I started filling in the blanks with full scale notes in my improvising, kind-of teaching myself the full scales without knowing it. Now I have to sound good over chord changes that one scale doesn't really fit over, playing into the chords instead, it's a bit more daunting to me.

I rarely comment on videos but I must say, you are doing a great job. As a guitar player with very little music theory knowledge, this is a great way to just start learning theory without thinking it's all about a bunch of boring notes on paper which you have to know by heart. So, your videos gave me motivation to go deeper, and I'm sure it will improve my (and, of course, other people's) guitar playing and understaning guitar fretboard in general. So thank you and keep up the good work :) P.S. I admire how many great videos you manage to upload. You da man!

Growing up only playing music by ear has got me preety far, but once i joined a band I relized i really dont know how to "play" the guitar. Watching your video has made me relize its possible to learn what the notes are, and what scales are. You also inspired me to really dedicate myself to learning. So I thank you and I look foward to watching and learning from all your videos! -Peace

Dave Shepherd I started when I was 14 and am now 37. Still play almost every day and gig as often as I can. (1-2 times a month). I can tell you that if you follow Music is Win's tips and advice, you will pick it up fairly quickly. I wish I had a resource and teacher this good when I started out with my musical journey. Good luck and my tip would be to make sure you practise everyday, even if only for 20-30 minutes. The callouses on your fingertips will harden and your hands will get stronger, your fingers more dexterous and fluid and your musical intuition will start to reveal itself. It's an amazing experience when that all comes together and it starts making sense. Good luck.

Impressive to say the least. You're very good at teaching. You're also becoming a REALLY good guitar player. I been playing 25+years but learned by ear. Never learned much theory. Rest of my family were semi famous musicians of sort, drummer, vocals, guitar, in the country music business years ago, I always felt pressure to pursue guitar due to music being a close thing my family grew to love. Glad I did, I love it of course, how can you not? (rhetorical question). :) Anywho, being a long time guitarist & learning from someone from a younger generation.... very cool. Props to you brotha!

dadude7 The numbering he was using was the scale formula, which is based on the chromatic scale and is related to the major scale, the "mother of all scales". The major scale is constructed from all major and perfect intervals. All other scales are varied in some way. For example, a minor scale (aeolian) has a flat 3, flat 6, and flat 7. A Dorian scale has a flat 3 and a flat 7 like the minor scale, and a major 6 like the major scale. The mixolydian scale is a major scale but with a flat 7. If you took every possible interval and played them in a sequence you would have the chromatic scale (root, flat 2, 2, flat 3, 3, perfect 4, augmented 4/diminished 5, perfect 5, flat 6, 6, flat 7, 7, octave). Hope that helps 🤘👍

good job with you explaining the idea . I don't necessarily have that problem but what I would like to see is scales in odd patterns or unconventional was of playing scales . I tend to play in a wide range not just using the pentatonic scale . but I have a hard time with extending my range off of what I do . I don't know much music theory at all and I play by ear. I am probably not making much sense but when I solo I can't seem to create a wider range of emotions due to my lack of scale knowledge . what would you recommend me doing other then learning new scales ?

So, this looks very similar to learning diatonic scale patterns one octave at a time, rather than learning a meaningless "box of dots". Learning and exploring the different ways an octave of a scale can appear (on one string, on two strings, 3 strings, ascending vs descending from different fingers while staying "in position") by learning the intervals that make up the scale, and all the ways those intervals can appear on the fretboard seems to be really opening up the fretboard for me. I find I am much more aware of what it is I'm playing, and lessental energy is needed to sort out where I am in a pattern. All patterns (box, three note per string, single string, diagonal, etc), meld together into different ways of linking octave fingerings together. Thoughts?

Starting at the "flat third position" eh? It always amuses me how so many people who consider themselves to be a guitar teach (especially the younger ones) assume so much knowledge in their audience. Recently I have tried two new guitar teachers. On both occasions explained that I have had previous lessons where I have been given a fretboard printout and told to "go away and learn that". I don't know how to do that task. After a suitable amount (£35/hour) of sympathy and assurance, both teachers gave me a fretboard printout and told me to "go away and learn that". It is staggering.
