Love the character of this video! And thank you for showing how to cap the water line! So many sprinkler head plugging, but I needed something to remove part of a zone. Thank you!

Exactly what I was looking for. Most other videos demonstrate capping a head while keeping the line in place. Up here in northern states (Minnesota) we need to have our lines blown out each fall before the ground freeze, and I don’t want water to continue flowing through the line to a capped end. This is much easier to cap the line and remove the last 4 heads in that run. After watching… the only suggestion I would have, would be to cap both sides of the cut line instead of just one. In case you (or future home owner) wants to reconnect the line. Otherwise it’ll likely get clogged full of dirt when the hole is filled back in. Other than that, great video! Thanks!

It was a tough decision not to cap it. I decided to be brave and commit. But, I agree, it’s a good idea to spend another dollar and cap it.

Most videos only show hot to cap it at the head but it's great to see how to block off a section. I need to cap the last head in a zone but it sounds like for the last head you should cap it after the head before so that it doesn't leave water in the line during the winter.

GREAT VIDEO. Super helpful. I am just reducing about 20 feet of line as my patio will be over it. Should I still cap and just pave over or am I missing a step?
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial8 ай бұрын
You may dig up that unused line when you’re preparing the gravel and sand base for your patio. Mine are only buried about 8 inches deep.
@Gnarkilldeuce8 ай бұрын
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial yes but instead of just capping the heads and installing patio over the line, i want to cut it out. It deadends anyway. I would prefer to just cut it back to about a foot away from the t connector in place now.

I wonder where the wires are and how to deal with them. I am trying to dig out a large section of the back yard for fruit trees and don't want sprinkler headers, wires, or pvc under them. I am scared of dealing with irrigation system wires though. Any videos for that?

Is it ok if I cap some sprinkler heads to add some stepping stone and will it be ok to park a vehicle on it just for once in a while? Thanks In advance
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial3 жыл бұрын
Capping off some sprinkler heads is fine and will not change anything. One thing to consider is if you are capping off the last sprinkler in the zone. If so, and if you winterize your system, it could result in water stuck in the dead lines and bursting the line when it freezes. If you are capping off the last sprinkler head, and you have freezing winters, I would recommend cutting and plug the line after the last head being used as shown in this video. As far as driving and parking on the underground line, I definitely can’t recommend driving on the lines. You would need to do it at your own risk. I personally would drive over it if I had to as long as the ground is firm and doesn’t sink. I would not park on it. However, if you are going to park on stepping stones, that would help to distribute the load and reduces the risk.

Quick tip when cutting PVC, don't use the PVC cutting tool when it's old, because it'll crack instead of making a clean cut. Instead use a hack saw to cut it off.

I tried the Orbit PVC lock cap. It seems to work. I didn’t want to risk not properly applying the cement and getting the old pipe clean seemed difficult and time consuming. My pipe was against the driveway, though, so less room to work around it.
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial3 жыл бұрын
That should do it. I have used the push on Shark Bite caps, which are the same premise as the Orbit cap. They are great.

Do I need to cap if I don't use the irrigation system?
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial2 жыл бұрын
No, I do not see any reason why that would be necessary. I would just turn off the water supply to the system. It is a shut off valve, off of the main water supply, that you open and close by hand. Mine is located in the basement (but not all homes have a basement depending on where you live). Search for a video for how to winterize your sprinkler system. Step one will be shutting off the water supply. Then, everything is still intact if the system is to be used in the future.

Love this video. One question please. WHY did you not cap the other side? I am a woman 65 and I like asking silly questions when I don't know the answer. LMAO
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial3 жыл бұрын
No problem! I did not cap it off because it will never be used again. If you are building a new building on top of the sprinkler, or pouring a concrete driveway on the sprinkler, or something like that, it does not need to be capped because you know you’ll never use it again. But if there’s any chance that you may reconnect it and use it again in the future, I recommend buying an additional plug and plugging it.

I think I would have sprung for an extra plug for the dead line Just in case I wanted to resupply it some day, then I wouldn't have to worry about dirt getting in the line. Probably a waste of money but that's just me ☺️

you should have capped both ends of that pipe, you never know when you might want to hook it back up and you cant do that if its full of dirt. caps are cheap, running new pipe isnt
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial Жыл бұрын
I completely agree. If there is any chance of reconnecting it in the future, it should absolutely be plugged. I didn’t say it explicitly (maybe I should have) because I assumed it would be understood. If someone is pouring a concrete driveway over it, or something like that, it may make sense to abandon it. I’ll leave it up to the viewer. I am personally 100% confident that I will never use it again, so I did not plug it.
