Fasting becomes almost like not fasting when one is on the keto diet. It becomes eating when you're hungry. Thank you again, Dr. Westman, for science-based nutritional advice.

Intermittent Fasting (OMAD) helped me GREATLY! I now eat 2 meals per day, but IF helps me in a powerful way. I do eat Keto when I eat, IF is powerful! At age 62 I was diagnosed as a T2D with a HbA1c of 9.9. After 4 months of OMAD my HbA1c was 4.9 WITHOUT medications. I even came off the BP meds, statin and CPAP for sleep Apnea. I now take no meds at all. I began my journey to health at age 62 two years ago. I am 64 now, 75 lbs lighter, much more energy.

I was doing great on Keto, my energy levels increased and I was feeling great! Then I saw a video on fasting and decided to add it in. Fasting actually set me back; my energy levels fell. I should listen to Dr. Westman- eat when you're hungry, stop when satiated. He is the voice of calm in the keto storm.

If you listen to Dr. Fung and others, long term fasting turns on growth hormone and there is a rebound building up of muscles when you break the fast. So there is no worry about doing a longer fast.

Westman's book "End Your Carb Confusion" covers it all!! I have read about 6 keto type books, carnivore code and a few others. "End your carb confusion" has done just that for me. No more confusion, no more measuring, weighing...nothing just follow the easy advice in this book. I am losing weight, gaining muscle, feeling better than ever at 60 years old:)))) Thanks Dr. Westman. * Oh I settled on one meal a day most day...however, I do eat 2 eggs and avocado on my strength training days about 3 hours before my workout, FEEL GREAT!!!

From July 2021 to Christmas 2021, I lost 70 lbs with a combination of a ketogenic diet and fasting (both daily restricted eating (usually 18:6, often OMAD) and multi-day), eating whole foods (leafy greens and meats... bacon, eggs, steaks, and liver (luckily, I'm one of those people who actually like liver) are staples of my diet). I was actually surprised at how easy it was to do multi-day fasts, and found 66-hr fasts to be a real sweet spot for me. I always felt amazing, and had great clarity of thought while doing multi-day fasts, and I was never hungry, once I'd exceeded 24 hours. I could choose to eat whenever I wanted. I am in total control of my eating. I love this! Even after exceeding my weight-loss goals, restrictive eating (IF) and multi-day fasting and a low-carb eating are in my life to stay. I feel amazing.

Excellent video! Confirms my thoughts exactly. So much info out there on IF but when keto is done properly you automatically fast. It's the mental food hang up that turns us back to food sometimes.

Interesting point of view. When I first started keto, I used the 16 hour fast. After awhile I discovered that I eat when I'm hungry, instead of a schedule. Which happens to be once or twice a day. Oddly enough, the hard part was learning how to tell if I was hungry.

Thank you. Great information. I’m now just over 60 hours into my 1st 72-hour fast. I think I’ll make it. I felt a little hungry before bed time last night and I had a little water and i was back on track again. My sleep wasn’t disturbed. I’m not feeling hungry so far. It is winter here, dark and cold this morning. I think it’s easier to fast in summer, but the fact I’ve gone this far in winter means that I can do this at least once a month or so. I’ve been on OMAD for nearly a year and go have done many 36-48 Hour fasts, which now are very easy. I love running on fat fuel. It’s a great way to live.

Oh, thank God for some common sense on this issue! Some internet gurus make intermittent fasting out to be the end-all and be-all of weight loss and health. Dr. Westman's approach is balanced, nuanced and workable. This really cleared it up for me.
@susanmoore369

Your approach to keto makes so much more sense than others here on your tube. I think common sense would tell us that too much fat then your body is not going to burn the stored fat the stored fat is what I needed to get get rid of. I have learned not to eat unless I am really hungry. Usually once a day. I do eat healthy meats and some veggies. Not a lot of veggies because I do have colitis and I have to be very careful. I am 60 years old with T2 diabetics. This diet has lowered my FBS and my A1c is down to 5.9. I lost 26 pounds in the first couple of months of cutting my carbs to 20 total a day. I only needed to lose 30 pounds. But when I had to start taking prednisone everyday for my colitis my weight loss has stalled. But I am continually still in ketosis except for a couple days in the last couple months. This morning my ketones were 1.7. Steroids have to be the worse drug out there to stall weight loss no matter what you are eating. I have gone for 36 hours a few times without food but I do drink fluids and make sure I am getting my salt and minerals in. I hope I am doing this right and I will continue to watch your videos. Thanks so much for what you have taught me so far. If I would have kept eating all that fat I would have probably gained weight.

I'm 13 months in now, and I can put a drop of sweetner in my coffee now. I don't want to, but I tried. I definitely couldn't have had sweetner in my coffee, in the morning, a year ago. A tsp of cream, yes, but nothing sweet! It would have made me crave sweet all day, and possibly have made me stop fasting. Simply because the sugar cravings would have been to strong. I could have it after my meal... or a bit in water at mealtimes... And I wasn't even very addicted to sugar, compared to many people, I know.

OMAD really worked well for me for a long time until I dropped to around 22 BMI. I wanted to get to about 20 BMI, but I couldn't do consistent OMAD anymore without feeling hungry, so I just ate every 12 or 14 hours. Fasting is great when you body cooperates, but if it isn't, I think eating is better. Something strange did happen to me though where I was eating a steak, salmon, and eggs over those 2 meals and I was still losing weight despite the 2 meals, so it's all good. It took awhile to go from 160 to 130, but there wasn't much rush at 160 anyway.

A good goal is 18 hours a day but but don’t try it all at once 12 hours then 14 then 16 don’t move it up quickly if it takes a month or more so be it , everyone is different. Getting from 16 to 18 took me much longer. Now if a medical reason ( surgery or blood test etc ) pushes you past that norm of 18 you will be surprised that 20 or 24 is easy once in a while. My max so far is 30 hours all Med related and I really was ok with it , well when you have no choice ....

Yes, I tried fasting and thought it would be hard but it is easy and I don't think I will ever stop doing 18:6 fasting. It is natural to me to the point that it disgusts me to eat before lunch. I have done up to 32 hour fasts but mostly it is 20-22 hour fasts outside the normal window.

at least according to my understanding, Dr Westman doesnt really believe in intermittent fasting. what is important is not when one eats, but what one eats. the core idea of his whole dieting plan is to minimize carbohydrates as much as possible, and the few carbs one eats should be the healthiest kind, that is, low-starch vegetables and the few carbs found in higher-fat dairy products

@shelly2758

"The frequent small meals" ...that is total BS. Once youre fat adapted, youll know because the hunger pangs will no longer effect you. Its a entertainment commercial for companies and persons selling their wares. Good luck!

"Some" people are idiots and parrot what they hear others say. Eat frequent meals is bullshit put out there by big food companies who gain to profit every time you put something in your mouth. I believe it also was Kellogs who started the saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, which is also pure bullshit.

Every single time you eat, your insulin is spiked, similarly, when you consume fruit juices, anything that contains sugar! consequently, when your insulin is spiked, fat-burning ceases. The information is at your fingertips in abundance. The more frequently you eat, the more you will want to eat, and so this equals weight gain. This is just common sense. Most people just talk a good game but are not prepared to do what is required to lose the body weight. Personally, for the past 5 years, my eating window daily is between 6pm - 8pm. So main meal then 1 hour later I eat a small clean dessert. For the remaining 22 hours, I drink black coffee and carbonated water. I'm NEVER hungry until my eating window rolls around. WHY? because I don't spike my insulin or the hormone ghrelin. I use discipline, and never make excuses to cheat. Periodically throughout the year I undertake multi-day fasts, usually 3 - 7 days. My longest water fast was 23 days in September 2019. Fasting is magical whether it's intermittent fasting or multi-day. It's also more a mental challenge rather than physical. Before a multi-day fast, you should prepare your body and mind....if you don't do that, then "prepare to fail" It requires discipline, common sense, and NO EXCUSES! Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, my experience comes from 5 years of living this lifestyle. Do your own research before attempting this. Good luck - Over and Out
@ellalella1
@ellalella1 3 жыл бұрын
It is almost impossible to eat small frequent meals when you eat low carb. You just get so full from the food you feel sick if you eat too often even if it is just a little. That is my experience at least, anything over two meals a day makes me feel funky even if I haven't had very large meals.

One caveat for viewers: When you lower your carbs(sugars and starches),and you start increasing the Fat in your diet you will lose a lot of water weight and electrolytes.You really have to make sure you get enough sodium in your diet so you feel good. Also, too much protein is converted by the body into glucose(sugar). You need protein but you don't need to over consume it. Its the Fats that keep you from being hungry. But like protein don't over consume fats either. Try to live in the balance. Also, walk walk and walk. It will do wonders for you body and mind. God Bless All of You on your Journey. Make it a great 2022!

I bought some fasting salts (potassium and sodium) and a small dose 14 hours or so into my usual 20-4 restores a great sense of well-being. I have only been doing keto and IF for 5 weeks, and plan on starting longer fasts in a few more weeks. My motivation for longer fasts is to clean up my cardiovascular system. I have had many benefits from keto and IF so far: weight loss, improved lipid profile, easing of inflamed joints and neuropathy, and improved mental clarity. Anyway, I cannot recommend fasting salts strongly enough!

eating vs fasting, fasting vs starvation: insanity vs common sense. Fasting forced is starvation. If you eat only when you are hungry, & you eat until you are comfortably full you won't overeat. If you focus on eating as an activity of celebration or filling time or comforting your injured soul . . . you will over eat. That's where I grew up. My endeavor now is to grow up and eat only what my body needs to function properly and be HEALTHY.

I’ve gone 36 hours without remotely feeling hungry. I’ve only done this twice. I really wonder if this was foolish and perhaps I might have lost some lean muscle but not sufficient to show up on my scales.

My husband's doctor told him today that he should not fast because it lowers his metabolism. He only skips lunch, and he has a protein shake for breakfast, then a bit of a larger dinner meal. He doesn't do keto, so is not in ketosis. I told him that might be true because he is not eating keto, but if he were on keto, that would not be true.

A protein shake is the worst possible breakfast. If he feels he needs something in the morning, a bit of butter or heavy cream (real cream from cows, with no added sugar) should suffice.

@@aliendroneservices6621 He chooses what he eats, I have no control over that. He does not do keto. He has been drinking these shakes for 20 years. I can't fix it.

Tell him to eat a couple of eggs and an Aberdeen Angus quarter pounder/or bacon - with a bit of added butter, for breakfast instead of the protein shake. Or, if he must have a protein shake, tell him to make his own out of collagen peptides and some slightly watered down full fat cream with a teeny bit of sweetener - to taste. Or flavour it how he likes. Just no sugar. You can’t go wrong. Collagen peptides, marine or bovine is straight protein with loads of amino acids, the building blocks, which makes it a superior protein powder, and the added double cream gives you the fat for fuel. You should try it! Loads of health benefits x

I'm not convinced that fasting over 24 hours is a good thing for healthy people. I have seen multiple sources of studies that point to lean muscle tissue loss with fasting over 24 hours. Dr Phinney and Dr Atkins both presented studies that point to lean tissue loss with longer term fasting. Although I don't think fasting, which is mimicking starvation is dangerous, because all animals have been doing it since the beginning of time, I am convinced muscle and protein levels should be preserved for the most part in most cases. Another reason I'm not so sure about fasting is because the whole fasting idea seems a lot like a fad to me. People are doing it mainly because of word of mouth and because Dr Fung is pushing it so much. I have not seen any real proof that fasting does not have a downside. I know it helps with certain people regulate and improve metabolic problems, but it just seem like people are doing because everybody is doing it. I'm not sold on long term fasting.

"Long-term" fasting is not 24 hours. Long term is more like 7 days or more. If you keep your protein intake up on an intermittent fasting schedule, you will not lose muscle tissue. However, if a person constantly does a calorie restriction type diet, your body will go into starvation mode and will take appropriate actions to counter act that. Also, relying on only two sources, one of whom has been dead for quite some time, is a mistake. There are so much current data out there that proves fasting, if done properly, does not result in muscle loss. I do a 72 hour water fast once every 3 months and do my home workouts 3x per week and my performance continues to advance. I am still getting stronger, not weaker as you are suggesting.

@@patrickh709 That's fine. Most of the sources I read say that long term over 48-72 hours done too often can make people lose muscle. I agree what you are doing is good.
