Realized I accidentally cut out the part where I mention swapping and rotating your wheels so they wear more evenly (6:04). Also, this is the start of our maintenance pinned comment. Drop some suggestions and I’ll start to add to it

If you wear out your wheels when sliding, when you swap and rotate make sure you put them in opposite way (rear left wheel goes on the right front truck, rear right to front left and vice versa) If you really chip/break large part of your tail/nose you can also chop it into a smaller deck.

if the bolts on your drop through trucks are digging into the wood, you can get drop through backing plates as a layer between the bolts and deck.

Yo, for me, board maintenance was like the same as workin on a car. You get more in tune with your ride. Pro tip on the bearings though, I used rubbing alcohol. The higher the alcohol content the better since it evaporates off the bearings. I didn't have a bones bottle like that. I took a gatorade bottle and popped a bolt in with nut to hold the bearings. Same, same. There was no better feeling than hopping on freshly cleaned bearings with new lube in them.

Another thing to add, pencil shavings are a dry lubricant meaning no dirt will be attracted unlike soap shavings. You can use this to rub on your pivot cup, bushings and bushings seats on your trucks, no squeaky trucks.

Also You can make your own bearing cleaner with any plastic bottle, a 3/8th inch bolt that will fit in your bottle, some o-rings, and a cut up pen tube for spacers. Works the same as the $10 ones and it costs a dollar or two. And don't throw away your cleaner afterwards! Just skim the top mucky stuff off and the rest should be clear/good to use again.

Fabulous video and I love your work! I am 45 years old lol and just starting Long boarding as a way to spend more time with my kids. Kind of an odd question here, but how often should you lube your bearings? At this point I’m only going 20 or 30 minutes a day with them, but I’m just looking for a ballpark figure on how often I should take them apart and put them back together from a maintenance perspective. Any ideas you have would be awesome! Keep up the great work and keep shredding!
@butanefuel47
@butanefuel47 3 жыл бұрын
Don’t lube your bearings without cleaning them, can push grime in the bearings deeper and into the tracks for the balls and all that, lube them when you clean them, and you should prolly do that like once a month if you’re riding like 5 days a week, or whenever they roll for a noticeably less amount of time or are being noisy. (tbh I get lazy w the cleaning, only do it when they get noisy and mine are fine). Unless you get them wet, if you get them wet take them out, clean and dry thoroughly or they’ll form rust spots and will never roll the same.
@garyfreeman896
@garyfreeman896 3 жыл бұрын
I also am a 45 year old long boarder. My advice would be get to know your board. Pay attention to how it rolls and feels. The bearings will tell you. Also think about the environment you ride a lot in. Park path ways are generally fairly dust and pollution free. If ride a lot in the city there will usually be a lot more dirt just in the air let alone the on street. If you ride beach boardwalks often I find these to be the worst. So, if the outside of your wheels collect a lot of dirt then your bearing will too and get to know your board a little more and you will feel it. We might be getting older but we're still rad!!

Rusted bearings are not the end of your board. Take the seals off, and use mineral spirits to loosen them up. Put them back on without the shields, and you will be good to go, but fair warning. It's the equivalent of straight piping your board. I do this on purpose for my street board.

For a rainy day setup i just buy a kryptonics board for thirty bucks at walmart and use the bearings and wheels, maybe even the deck. I see it as buying a set of wheels and cheap bearings along with a lil deck, u can use during rainy days, u can also change the board like i do by sanding and painting it, but jus do u man... Oh yah, and also i never use the trucks because i never like them, but i guess you could switch out the bushings, or just use your regular trucks and dry them after words

WD40 or other water dispersant can actually have its place in protecting your bearings. If you're out skating all the time in all weather you're going to be frequently exposing your bearings to water. You're not always going to have the time to take everything apart for a proper clean and WD40 can work well as a temporary measure to literally disperse the water in your bearings and prevent rust. However if you use it you need to use it very frequently until the next time you do a proper clean and lube. It's just a temporary measure but it will definitely prevent rust, lubricate for a short period of time and stop squeaking. It's not ideal, it's just a wet weather measure.

I think typically bearings every 2/3 months and everything else as needed, which is probably not super often unless you really want the wheels and grip clean

Also think about where you ride. City streets and beach boardwalks are in my experience where I pick up the most dirt. Riding on park pathways I find the cleanest.

LW & Gary have great input. It's personal preference and dependent on your riding environment, but I'd say that 2-3 times a week is overkill. I do a deep clean like 1-2x a year. Bearings every couple of months. But again, it's really up to you

Hey Billy, nice content and great and extensive work on the videos. Despite all the efforts I found one thing still have lots of potential - is your narration style: it's not fluid, it's quite stumpy, very similar to early days of computer generated voice (even in the same sentence, not even talking about two cut together). And that's why it's really hard to follow and understand. Would be great to see and hear some improvements here. Thanks alot for your work!

Doing some sanding will actually help with the nose and tail chips and cracks as well, depending on situation. Ok, and you JUST brought it up. Disregard dis mess.

Actually wd40 is fine as long as you will lubricate the bearings afterwards. This is what i normally do and all my bearings still spins perfectly and no rust. I have both zinger oil and bones speed cream and i dont see any difference at all.

That may be true, BUT it attracts grime to it

WD 40 dissolves lubricants and urethane. Bad idea

Hmmm interesting. I wouldn't suggest WD40 since it attracts grime, like Braden said. But you do you
